Cheers mate. Nice words. Let’s be honest, going the quick 700m route would have been boring 😂 I do have some positive feedback for the GPS though. It seems a few people are blaming the GPS and I know exactly why. I have a lot of experience with them and it’s never let me down. I have lent it to people that have got lost almost instantly and that’s caused by not regular watching it. The map floats when you’re not moving so getting the right direction is hard unless your moving and most people look at it when they’re stationary. Just so you know I’m laughing typing this so don’t take my long response the wrong way. I swear 99% of people stuff up using these things. It’s classic 😂😂😂 I love seeing people crack the shits with them 😂 My scenario wasn’t the GPS it was the maps I had on it. I knew exactly where I was but there was no track. Bush bashing through the thinner parts was the only option and with the regular glance to check I was heading in the right direction I eventually got there. It was a tough slog but I was never lost and it got me right where I needed to be. I love my GPS 😁 Thanks for watching

Great video, as always mate. As my old man always reminds me - take a compass with you even if you’ve got the best GPS system money can buy
@advanturest2 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. A compass is actually some pretty good advice, battery powered devices are never fully reliable. Saying that my GPS has never let me down. The maps on the other hand have. I could buy new maps but my old maps are normally fine as fire roads and alike don’t often change. I normally plot a route before going out and don’t even use the maps, I just follow a pink line. I could’ve checked newer maps at home when doing my plotting but I didn’t. I’m actually glad I didn’t because it added a bit of drama to the video 😂 Good times. I feel like I want to go deep of the track now and see how I go. Thanks for watching 👍

Great vid Tim. 2 hr ride would be a 1/2 day production. Just wondering if you use a lens filter because the colours look very Fuji like..But it works really well.
@advanturest2 жыл бұрын
It certainly is time consuming but I love playing with my camera so it’s all worth it. As for filters, I recently bought a variable ND. (Nisi True Colour 1-5 stop) the last 2 videos I’ve used it but I also have the little 16mm prime with no filter. I’ve been shooting in log and trying to colour grade it myself. I see so many awesome videos online but I can never seem to get mine to look the way I’d like. Realistically I probably upload too early and don’t take the time to learn colour grading properly. I also always seem to want to make changes as soon as I upload it but by then it’s too late. I think I’m learning more every video which is cool. This is shot on a Canon R6 and GoPro 8 Thanks for watching 👍

I have to say, these videos are incredible. I love the photography and cinematography. Really great work. Just out of curiosity, what software do you use to make the live GPS maps that you overlay on the video? Really well done. Thanks!
@advanturest Жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, unfortunately I don’t have a simple bit of software that can link the gps info and time of the video files etc so I do it all manually using Adobe After affects. I’ll give you a quick explanation so you have an idea of what I’ve been doing. If you don’t know anything about after effects this may be very confusing but I’ll type it anyway just in case you have used it. After the trip I’ll load my gps data on to my maps and then I’ll take a screen shot. I’ll use that screen shot as a base layer in after effects. I’ll then use the pen tool to trace the real maps, once done I’ll generate a stroke which will give me the line. in this case I did white. I’ll then create a new layer and do the same for the line I rode. With this layer I animated it with a start and finish point which creates the movement of the line as I ride. Once these 2 steps are done I turned off the screen shot layer so it’s invisible and then I import it to premiere pro and overlay it over the footage. Adobe Premiere is the editing software I’ve been using. Because the video clips are jumping through time I would just overlay a rough section of the map of where I thought I was. It’s a little bit clunky but I like playing and learning and I think it adds some value. Hope I didn’t just confuse you to much 😂 Cheers mate.

@@speedygarage264 Sorry forgot to reply yesterday, Looks like you've got the hang of it. I noticed your yellow line isn't covering the white line completely. What I've done in the past is make the stroke of the yellow line bigger. 1. it stands out a bit more and 2. I think it looks better if you cover the white line. you can also go back and move each point to make it line up a little better. Depends how much effort you want to put in. Something else I've been doing which I didn't originally mention. Instead of doing the base map in after effects, I've been doing that in photoshop and then dragging the psd file into after effects. I've been doing this for 2 reasons, I feel its easier to work on in photoshop and I also save all my maps incase I do another ride in the area and want to use the map again. If you import the psd file into after effects you can also update that base map and it will automatically change in after effects. What I'd love to do but haven't worked out yet, Pin a picture of a bike to the front of the yellow line so you can see where I'm travelling. That would be cool.

On this trip I used an old Shogun Trail Breaker frame, not sure what year but my guess is late 90’s as it has a 1 1/8th steerer. I didn’t talk about the bike because I was just testing it out before doing some mods to it. I plan on making a video about it. Other parts on this bike I borrowed of other bikes. Forks are off my old Raleigh M-trax 1000. These have disk mounts welded on. Wheels and handle bars of a cheap giant I use to own. It has a Funn ridge single speed crankset, A Microshift Advent 9 speed Groupset. The rear brake was an interesting one, I made a little bracket that bolted to the dropout eyelets and also clamped onto the seat stay, calliper bolted to this and it actually worked perfectly. Brakes are some cheap Shimano hydraulic set. They work fine. Overall I didn’t enjoy the Shogun. The frame had no flex and I could feel every bump. I’ve already reverted back to my old mongoose from other videos. The mongoose has a TANGE chromoly frame and it’s nice to ride. I’m still going to make a video on the Shogun though as my plans are a little outrageous and damage may occur 😂 I can’t risk the mongoose!

@@advanturest you gonna make a seperate vlog on it? Like new parts and upgrades? TC!
@advanturest2 жыл бұрын
@@warrenzausa3145Yes and I’ve already started filming it. I’m planning on converting it to through axle 27.5inch wheel which involves installing new dropouts. Why you may ask, I don’t really know but I thought it would be fun to try. I’d love to build a complete bike one day and modifying an old one seems like the first step. I was going to do it to the mongoose but I like it too much. This Shogun is too stiff so it’s now my experiment bike. I plan to show other parts of the bike that don’t require the new dropouts. I’ll try go over everything. I’ll be working on it at my parents house so this will take a while for me to film as I’m not there too often. Hopefully I can do a heap this weekend.

If it interests you the phone app I’ve been using is called MapOut and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s only for Apple though.

Stupid question, if it’s that cold why not just put your tent in the hut? Or is that not permitted or personal preference?
@advanturest Жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question, technically they’re for emergency shelter, you’re allowed to use them but the idea is you camp outside. I have slept in a few but for other reasons other than the cold. Once it was raining so I just slept inside so I didn’t have to deal with my tent. I’ve heard stories of mice damaging gear so I’d prefer to have all my stuff outside in the tent with me. I did see a mouse at this hut when I first arrived. I’ve also heard of people hiking out to huts with no tent and planning on sleeping in them, only to arrive and it’s full of other people. If it’s an all day hike this can be an issue. I suppose that’s why they say emergency shelter only.

So, just read your comment and googled it. First thing that showed up was a USB lens heater for $20. I’m 100% getting one 😂. It would be very handy. I also just got a new power delivery usb bank so I can charge my Mirrorless camera. In every bikepacking trip video I’ve made I’m always worried about running out of batteries so I tend not to do Timelapses. This video I charged a battery while in the car so it didn’t phase me. I think you may see a lot more Timelapses from me in the future. Also, I actually made a lens heater years ago by soldering resistors in parallel and connected them to a battery. It works perfect but the battery I use is a big 7Ah lead acid battery that I don’t take bikepacking. Last year I made a video called Tiny Akira, we stayed in a tiny home. We had some awesome stars so I used that lens heater for a 3 hour Timelapse. It worked well. The Milkyway left the frame after 3 hours so I turned it off.

Don't trust GPS or Google maps, I've been lead astray too many times.
@advanturest2 жыл бұрын
Sure it’s not the user? 😂 I trust my GPS, my issue is the maps are ancient. Most fire roads haven’t changed in a million years. In this case my old maps had a track that either didn’t exist or is very old and overgrown. Since doing this trip I’ve looked on more modern maps and they have the correct markings. It was fun going rogue though haha.
