I know what hurricane lanterns are --- they have been around and in use even before the '50s when Manila Railroad Company use them outside, lighted and hanging on the side of the last cab of their freight trains (mercansya they're called). This last cab which house train equipment and personnel was called the caboose. (I know you also know these things --- I am reciting them here for my own benefit: to remind me of what I learned about 60 years ago.)
