Solo Camping in the White Mountains of California: Best Views of the Eastern Sierra

About an hour and twenty minutes north of Lone Pine are the White Mountains. One of the best spot for star gazing, hiking, and free camping in California, the White Mountains are often overlooked as people head up the 395 to the nearby high country of the Eastern Sierra. The narrow, meandering highway 168 climbs up the White Mountain range, offering the best views of the Eastern Sierra to the west and even Death Valley to the east. Each sharp turn opens up to another vista overlooking some of California’s most insane landscapes.
The White Mountain range is home to the ancient Bristlecones, a species of pine with an impressive lifespan and a unique way of dealing with the harsh, high elevation conditions. The Schulman Grove is actually home to the oldest living thing on earth--the Methuselah tree!

The thing is that the Grandview campground is first come first served. I went there during the week and the best sites were taken. So on a weekend you probably won't get anything. It's an amazing area though and I'm glad I went.

Yea, that is the unfortunate part. I always make sure to go with plenty on sunlight in case! There’s some nice paid campgrounds in Big Pine as an alternative

great video. i spend alot of time up there shooting the MW. methuselah is no longer the oldest tree discovered. methuselah trail was tougher than i thought but i'm gonna take a shot at white mountain peak next month 😎
