There's no better way to enjoy outdoor photography than camping out on location to enjoy best of sunset photography and sunrise photography in the landscape. In today's video I take my Canon 5DIV and my Nordisk Telemark 2 tent up to the summit of Bow Fell in the lake district. The conditions were beautiful and I enjoyed a good crop of images from single frames to stitched panoramas.

In the last photo (21:29) I wonder why f/14? it sort of starts and ends at infinity :-) And it seems to be hazy so being in focus or sharp is not possible anyway. Were you hoping that diffraction would add to any naturally occurring haze or fancied a longer exposure?

I'm seeing a lot of people happy with this "old Thomas" returning, and I would like to balance the feedback. Photography to me is a journey in itself. As soon as you settle on one permanent expression, you're done. Those of you left unsatisfied by his recent stuff, do you think you could get something like this if he had just continued in the same path all the way until now? You may claim to like him and his photography, but the pressure you put on him by worshiping one fragment of his creativity might end up like a prison. Do I enjoy seeing more of this earlier style of Thomas' videos? Definitely. Do I enjoy seeing him experimenting with different mediums, equipment, styles? Yes, and there's no doubt in my mind that those are the ones that help me evolve my own photography the most. It is possible to have both. In general, don't be afraid of change. It's going to happen no matter what, and if you don't learn to embrace it both for yourself and others, you will inevitably end up disappointed and bitter.

Back in Fuji days, I was loving my 2nd hand 18-55mm and 35mm with my XT20. These 2 followed me in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Australia, france, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, Belgium, Greece and many other places. It took photos of my wedding. My wife had a Panasonic Bridge camera which traveled with us too. When I look back at the old photos, I almost could not recognize which camera took what photos (except in nights). And I paid half of the traveling expenses of all the countries above with the money I saved for a Canon R5. And the lenses mentioned in the video. But I sacrificed and spent the money on travelling and by learning history and cultures. My photographs turned out just fine. Having a good shot with a okay camera is better than not having the shot. I sold my Fuji sets. And Now I am proud owner of a canon 70d , Sigma 18-35 and 70-200 f4 (all 2nd hand, 1300€ total). ___ Don't spend money on gears. Spend money on memories.

does anyone else look at Thmas heaton videos and practice the "eye" for compositions. In all the snippets of film when panning, "B roll" shots Im always looking to see if any compositions pop up to my eyes . . just an observation. As of today 29/09/2021 Im busy planning a trip up to the lake district with my partner who Im teaching photography. Ive spent an afternoon on you tube looking at locations around Keswick, Ullswater, Catbells, Derwentwater and finally Coniston after watching a wonderful (but ultimately sad) doc on Donald Campbell. Im busy doing portrait TFPs at the moment and planning a couple of Boudoir shoots in London, so this little break will be glorious. The fall will be well under way at the end of Oct which is when were heading up. My Canon 6D and the 24/105 L F4 & my trusty 70/200 F4 L non IS will be going through a real workout I cannot wait!

Great video, a little to frantic for me perhaps but still great! Lovely conditions like these are so hard to film, always battling priorities, should I film or take photos? Myself I approach most scenes with the hope of getting one really good composition and photograph it as the light progresses. That frees up more time for filming for me. But less focus on the photography, priorities as I said. Really hope you have more hiking adventures planned, those are the best!

What a great way to spend a Sunday morning cuppa! One of your best videos ever, I think, and I was actually almost giggling at your excited energy through the first seven or eight minutes. I do enjoy your calm, measured videos, but now and then it’s good to see the chaos. I appreciated seeing the behind-the-scenes dumping of the camping gear, for example. Oh, and I REALLY liked the little rectangle that came up to show us where the shot was as you stooped out of frame. That really helped me to understand the way you look at a landscape when you’re going for a longer focal length. Please consider doing this more often, as I found it very useful. I love the vicarious enjoyment I get from these videos. Not too many mountains where I am (Southampton), but I’m hoping to move much further north at some point and start getting out into nature again. It’s been far too long, and you continue to be an inspiration. You’re one of my favourite people on KZbin. Thank you for sharing what you do.

BRAVO MY FAVORITE Landscape photographer! Beautiful photos- More than that beautiful energy. I have been in a lul. I lived in colorado and California and now in charleston SC. I have the blue ridge mountains but after living in the previouse states the east coast does not inspire me like the west. But it is making me a better photographer making me hunt and find compositions others have not provided. The whole coved thing for awhile seems to want to suck the life out of insperation. However, What I see when I go out and what I see in your photos Is God. I feel the splendor and the power and emotion we see and feel is the hand of God and what we see is his artwork. GOD who sent his son for us. Yes we see the face of God. I enjoy your photos and I enjoy your life's journey. Joyful and challanging at times. I know you tube is your business. But thank you for sharing your journeys. Does not feel like a business.. Your soulful in your work, your honest and ethical and true.. Blessings.

Good one Thomas. I rather liked that the whole thing was a bit frantic, much more as it happened kind of thing. I am mostly a Landscape Painter, but photography is often part of that process. Looking around where you are for this one, I could spend several days there, and likely still not get everything possible. You weren't up there alone though, you had neighbours - and not just the sheep ( at the end you mentioned hikers coming over the ridge, just as two sheep strolled that very spot. ), I could see at least 2 tents around the 1:55 mark, maybe a 3rd as well? A very enjoyable video, thank you.

I always wonder... Don't you have a fear of wildlife like snakes or scorpions or any other bigger animal while u camp... Because I have that fear even when i am with my friends 😂

I very much appreciate this video here. It’s good to see a video where it goes back to its roots and to see you “doing the dance” of chasing the light haha I struggle to make videos and I really appreciate that even years later of KZbin, it’s still about the photography versus the video. I think the term “ace” comes to mind 👍🏽 great video journal Tom.

Love this video and currently binge watching the last year of your videos. Hoping to get your book for Christmas as I keep trying to hint it to my wife every time she’s around while I’m watching your videos.
