Landscape photography requires a certain amount of commitment whether it is a long hike or an early start. In this video I aim to photograph sunset and sunrise in the lake district national park, however I have nowhere to stay for the night. Wild camping is out of the question, campsites were full and hotels are too expensive. My last option was to sleep in my car and it paid off as I woke up to beautiful mist and fog which made for some great landscape photography.

Thomas Heaton Excellent video as always. So very glad the mist came through for you. Torn between the colour and black and white, but I do love the lone sheep in the dark area of the B&W shot. Ordered both your book and calendar and they just arrived two days ago. Love them both. JoAnne

Definitely the colour version Thomas, I like how you can see the blue water in the foreground and to the left rear of the image, it's a nice contrast of colours.

Hi Thomas, if you are looking for more separation in BW photo use color filters. It is of course possible simulate in post process but not everytime because color filter alter how much light of given color is touching sensor. I thought that color filters are obsolete in digital era but they are not.

Tom, there's a gentleness to your videos. There's an integrity, a respect and a simplicity. I would rate you as a bloody decent film maker at this stage. Also the music that you choose and how you use it. These videos are beautiful and an art form all by themselves.

I love the black and white image for the reason you stated, the seperation. I find myself having an issue with seperation. I think have a great image but then when I get home, I find there's no seperation and the imagine is one horrible mess because you can't tell what the subject was supposed to be. I have to admit, you bring a tear to my eyes with the images you take and the positive energy you bring in your videos. That emotion you showed when you finally got the shot was so real that I wanted to go out and find anything to shoot. Take care

Been using the vehicle for photography trips for a few years now. Used to have a Ford Kuga and had to sleep diagonally, but changed to an x3 a few years back. Have to remove the back seat out, then the back drops almost flat. I then have a mattress from one of the kids old beds. Windows are all tinted, so no one can see in. Its a lot cheaper that paying for accommodation, especially when you might be getting up at 4 in the morning or even getting in really late

Both, for me! I like the b&w a lot, but the softly coloured one just seems to have more character, somehow, and there's still plenty of separation. I've had some success at this location in snowy conditions, when the reddish-black bare branches stand out well against pale/foggy surroundings. Can't think of a good place to park near the first location, I'm afraid - I could suggest tiny roads on the marsh, but farmers might investigate a parked car, and the obvious car park in a quarry ~5 km away is known for, er, nocturnal activities!

I think I prefer the softer colour image - it seems to capture the sense of place more, but that is just a personal reaction. On the subject of sleeping in the car, I do this fairly often in my Ford Focus, but even when I lie diagonally across I can't fully stretch, but nonetheless I get a good night's sleep. I'll often take my tent in case there is a suitable place to put it though - it only takes a few minutes to put up and down and there is often a little spot on the side of a really minor road to put up up and not trouble anybody, and I can relax knowing that I can always fall back on the car! Thanks for another enjoyable video.

I don't have a favourite in as much as I think they both have equal merit. The colour version has a very 'old master' painterly feel about it and would look great, in the right setting, in a very ornate frame. The monochrome version would suit a more minimilist frame in a very contemporary setting IMHO. Either way I think that they are both superb images. Great video, your videos always make me smile they strke the right balance between education & fun. Keep up the good work!

I was trying to work out which I prefer best and kept going back and forth between colour and black and white. I really like the separation with the black and white including the high contrast. Funnily enough I think the colour one looks a bit “meh”. For some reason I never look at a colour photo and think I wonder what that looks like in B&W, but I do look at B&W and think what does that look like in colour. That’s why, for me, the B&W works.

I think the B&W shot has a slight advantage over the colour, but only just. Both images have their merit. It's amazing how such small changes in the atmosphere make such a difference. B&W is more obvious because of high contrast and I think it make better work as an instant impression, colour is less obvious, you probably need more time to get used to it and I think it is kind of an image that you need to have more time to like it but when you finally like it you'll like it longer. About sleeping in a car, I did it few times now, in even smaller Kia Rio, I had to sleep on a pasanger seat because boot is too small even after folding back seats. I always suffer next morning :) , no pain no gain :) :) :) Love the video - slow pace, whispering - makes me calm and smile.
