3 days Arctic Backpacking & Solo Camping in a Heavy Rain, Lightning, Severe Thunderstorms & Heavy Wind, Scariest Storm Camping experience of my life! ASMR and Rain Sounds.
The closest Nordic town measured a record breaking rainfall of 36.4 mm in one hour, which is an all time high record for the northern half of the country. This happened sometime around my dinner time.
This was my scariest storm camping experience so far. I was above the polar circle in the arctic at 70.5° North, alone 35 km into the wilderness, when one of the most brutal thunder and lightning storms I have ever experienced hit me. It lastet for over 12 hours and had some of the most scary thunder and lightning I have seen. It felt like I was getting hit right on the head. I did manage to capture some great footage of the lightning though. This is the furthest north and most remote place I have ever backpacked in a very wild and cool area. I obviously survived so enjoy the storm!

In the Sierra we had some rain that got the mosquitoe fire out. But I'm having a hard remembering any other rain storm this summer and the last 2 yrs have set records for land burned. I've lived in the Sierra mountains for 32 yrs and can't say any rain storm was anything to worry about in the 1st place. When it does rain it comes down fast an hard but hardly ever lasts more than 20 to 30 minutes.

One thing I like about this video is that it illustrates the complete uselessness of the various kinds of lean-to shelters, cosy bonfires, light tarps etc in places like arctic Norway. You’re just in it. Half the time there is no “prevailing wind direction”, the rain comes in sideways changing with the wind. Any weakness in the structure or setup will be exploited by the wind and rain and once it gets a foothold it only gets worse from there, and the shit somehow always seems to hit the fan somewhere between 3-4 in the morning (probably because it’s the coldest then). If you do not set your tent right the noise rising and falling with long violent and unpredictable gusts will gradually drive you bonkers and anything rubbing against anything will eventually eat through fabric, line or whatever else and one thing you DON’T want on open tundra or a naked mountain in a rain storm is a big old tear or your whole rig flapping around in the wind or disappearing into the night or your dry gear base to be compromised. I knocked tarps a bit but I’ve sat through a fair few arctic storms in those just because I couldn’t afford a good lightweight domed tent. It’s possible but not exactly comfortable. Draw it out over a full week of it and you begin to feel rather battered and harassed from wear.

People had been coming down off the mountains, seeking any shelter in the private homes of other people, some domed tents had been blown about allegedly with people still in them and as I recall a bus had been pushed off the highway as well. Newspapers went “to locals and regulars the weather came as no surprise but … * lists havoc wrecked on tourism and general infrastructure * ” … I never pick a camp site in those regions without considering what the situation might be like in that spot in a storm to hurricane setting..It’s never quite come to the latter, for me yet, but it’s certainly not out of the question at all, slightly depending perhaps on the season.

One of my main tools is actually the weather forecast, I choose my gear based on the forecast, If it is really good then I go for a lighter loadout, if it is really bad, I probably wont go out at all, If it is unstable and has variations, like this trip had, I will bring my storm gear. If it is unstable and rainy but in a wooded area like Femundsmarka, I will bring a tarp in addition to my lighter weight gear. The Hilleberg Soulo is my unstable weather tent.

@@NorwegianXplorer I’ll check it out - the thing is when I go I am off for a month sometimes more living off spearfishing sometimes fairly remote areas, and while I always keep tabs on the forecast (seeing as I’ll be going into the sea usually several hours a day) - I more or less just have to commit with whatever gear is available to me - and since I am hauling the spearfishing gear including lead weights, everything else has to be super light weight and minimalistic which = expensive. I guess my next move would be more of a simple, storm proof tent, solution … Anyway - thanks for a great upload which really allows nature to speak!

That was a storm of storms! Personally, I was very impressed with how well the Hilleberg withstood the elements. Those winds were no joke and the tent remained steadfast against it; the rain was intense also and you were being pelted for many hours before the leak began - looked like from the end of the zipper in the vestibule. Any other moisture appeared to be condensation. Not many tents would have held up. I almost purchased one while watching 😎. In the beginning I was concerned about the river rising, but later it appears you had sufficient distance from high water. Then I was concerned about your decision to pack up rather than wait it out - but you made the right call. Glad you made it out and shared your survival adventure....I've watched your wild winter videos, rain camping and sunny warm...great mix! Take good care Jarl. Looking forward to your next adventure.

I once was biking and caught by surprise as a hail thunder storm approached much faster than expected. I luckily found a shed, but it was covered with metal sheets which is not safe during lightning strikes. Also there was a big trailer from one of the farmers, also a huge metal construction. Facing in my direction there was on open barn with horses. As the hail began and the lightning got closer I moved as far away from the metal around me as I could (maybe 2 meters). The hail was very noisy due to the metal roof. If the lightning would hit me I could not have done anything against it. Therefore and because I had no other choice I tried to enjoy natures show and got myself into a fatalism mood. What shall I say, it worked. I remained relaxed and it was a very amazing experience. The horses opposite to me in their open barn got a little bit exited but still calm. They got pretty wet. On my way home I saw lots of fallen down branches, some of them quite heavy. If I had driven home through the thunderstorm it would have been much more dangerous. Once the lightning appears I count the seconds until the thunder hits. Every 3 seconds makes a distance of around 1 km or 0,8 miles. Nice video. Once you found another tent which keeps you dry please let us know. Although I could imagine that even the most waterproof tent has it's limitations when it comes to such an event. Your channel is worth a subscription. Done.

I tend to stay up pretty late at night, into the morning. A couple years ago when Oregon was besieged by horrible fires that took out swaths of rainforests (which absolutely gutted me), a weird freak storm rolled in at about 2 am. The lightning was like a strobe light, thunder raging, and the trees in the backyard were bent so far over from the wind I thought they would snap right off. It was the only time a storm really scared me. It doused the forest fires, which I was so grateful for. But I benefited from being inside a warm house, not a tent. So I can just imagine how scary this must have been for you. And then the added disappointment of the leaky tent. There's nothing worse than being damp and miserable. I'm glad you decided to go back to the car. Mother Nature can be a fickle beast. :)♥

Hey there NE from Massachusetts! I’ve gotta say that trip was one of a lifetime for sure! Having done trailwork as a summer job during college, I learned to use a four season tent for living in. It was in New Mexico where they get monsoon storms in the afternoon so you want to be feeling safe after a hard days trailwork. That tent, like the Hilleberg, wasn’t cheap but I was young and living in the barracks at the time so i could afford it. Knowing what I know about the Hilleberg, that tent shouldn’t have leaked either, at all. Seems like they would have that kind of leak engineered out of the system by now. I really like the primus stove a lot. Looks like a really functional little cooker. I would echo some of the sentiments in the comments in that it didn’t collapse and I always think about how it would be if i was sitting out there in no tent how much worse that would be. You showed amazing patience and calm during the whole ordeal! Thank you for showing us that beautiful part of the planet. Take care. NQU

@@NorwegianXplorer In my mind, pitching my tent with the foot end into the wind, Enan Tent, is a mistake because IF gusty winds cause foot end tent stakes to pull out of the ground, I could be turned upside down while zipped up inside my sleeping bag. I pitch my Enan with the Head end into the wind. My head/shoulders/torso are heavier than my legs/feet. Yes, I'm a small person, 5'3" tall & weigh 105# so I have plenty of interior space inside most any tent.

Have a Cabela's Alaskan Guide tent, 4 man. I know it's too heavy for what you do, but it is the most solid tent that I have owned. No leaks, withstands wind. It's awesome, as is your video. Thanks!

I was nervous for you in this one! Loved the beauty of the site tht became your storm camp. I could hear my dad teaching us -"never camp right by running water-the streambed can fill with water, rocks or debris within seconds. Better to walk a few steps to water than die in your sleep". He was raised in Colorado and had seen neighbors lose their house like that. And it looked like those mountains had had had massive rockslides in the past. Isn't it funny how what is "safe" changes according to our teaching as kids? I remember returning to the homestead from Denver one day on a very flat Interstate, and suddenly dad was trying to dodge telephone poles floating across the road. One minute it was dry Interstate and seconds later we were dodging debris in an instant river.

I read all the comments B4 composing the following. Thank you for taking your time, effort, & equipment to share your adventure with MEeee. I noticed several large rocks that appear to have been placed atop tent pegs at the end of guyout lines. Those heavy rocks likely HELPED keep the tent pegs in the ground & your tent from being blown down. No torn fabric, no broken guylines, no broken poles, no zipper snags, they stayed zipped. I'm assuming your Soulo is the RED label, not the BLACK label Soulo. That HOT meal provided nourishment & comfort, thank goodness for having the equipment needed to boil water needed for coffee & the freeze dried meal while inside your shelter. No sleep & being hunkered down for 15 hours is definitely an ordeal. Please let us know WHAT you do to fix the leak & WHAT/HOW you test your repair to see if it's fixed. Brilliant stuff; like usual! Regarding the HB Soulo: it is a great tent in many respects, however again and again they fail to fix issues regarding leaking zippers. I have seen people receive emails from HB saying that they recommend putting some seam seal in such areas, but really, for the price, they should be doing that. I personally only use my Soulo in winter when it is dry and cold / snow, not outside of winter when it is wet. I prefer my MLD Trailstar for all situations outside of winter. Nothing to fail on such a simple design, and no leaking zips or wind driven rain coming through top vents.

I am quite happy with the Soulo for bad weather in summer, except for the leaking zipper, but I think it is too small for my winter trips, where I like to use a Nallo 3. For «normal» weather I still use my cheap Marmot tungsteen UL 1p

@@NorwegianXplorer that's true. It is a bit small for winter but it works. But if you're travelling with skis and a sled then bringing a large tent is no issue anyway

Thanks so much for this. It’s lovely to share your tent in the rain. My worry, when I imagined myself in your situation, was the metal/carbon fibre tent frame. It might protect against lightening like a faraday cage but who would want to find out? Best wishes, Jonathan.
