Embarrassed about eating alone??? I've been eating alone on ships, trains, planes and at hotels and night clubs for 50 years - and I lived in New york city - its never been a problem, and you get to enjoy the food piping hot, instead of having to converse as it gets cold. People do get curious and wonder who and what you are - but just for a moment, and then they forget you exist. I've travelled alone to five continents - sometimes I met people in various countries, other times I spent a week there and never spoke to anyone. A cruise is the same as anywhere else. The nice thing about travelling alone is you get to speak only to who you want to.

My first cruise this December and I will be solo and the cruise is 34 days. I have traveled extensively by myself and have no trouble with that. Since my cruise is 34 days, internet at $15 per day adds up. Can I just do it every 3 rd day? I am old enough to live most of my life without WiFi and internet and it was ok, but now I am addicted like most people. Luckily I got a very low supplement at 10%

This is an extremely helpful video for a lot of people. When I lost my husband, I did my first solo cruise through the Panama Canal for 17 days. at first I was really nervous but after a few days, I got completely used to it. I found the best way to meet people was by going to the game shows on Princess and soon we had a group. It was lovely to see these people around the ship. I always like to join the choir or some continuous activity to see the same people again and again. I’ve since taken three other solo cruises and I have another two booked. I’m not going to let the fact that I’m alone stop me from travelling the world. I say just go for it. And be brave to strike up conversations with people around the ship because it makes you feel not so alone and you meet wonderful people from all over.

I have heard it said that one of the greatest things you can do for yourself is learn to dine in public alone. I had to learn many years back while solo travelling. It can feel strange at first (I suggest take along your phone, a book/i-reader, newspaper, whatever you need to look and feel comfortable), but you do get used to it pretty fast.... at the very least you can revel in the fact that you're comfortable doing something most people just are not! Occasionally you do get some curious looks from people, but it's mainly just that they know they couldn't do it. These days, I way prefer travelling alone. I love having my family or friends with me of course, but as you've stressed, the freedom is incredible!

I’ve been single for over 20 years, so have no problem doing things on my own. The only thing holding me back from cruising solo was paying for the double occupancy room. You’ve laid that concern to rest! Thank you so much for this video!

I’m so glad. Thanks for watching!
@DenaInWyo Жыл бұрын
What you also have to keep in mind, and this is the fault of the cruise lines entirely, is that ANY hotel type room you book is based on double occupancy. The Hilton isn't going to cut your price in half because you're by yourself, but they also don't advertise their room rates "per person." The cruise lines like to have those lower numbers on the webpage, when in reality they should just come out and say "$2,000 per cabin, with added fees for additional guests." Even with no solo supplement though, you do get a little bit of a break by not having to pay port fees and gratuities for two. It's all perspective.
@burningblue1254 Жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. I have been in passenger services for 23 years and get this same question over and over. Hotel rooms are sold to more singles than doubles. So the single rate is actually the double rate. My cruise line sells less than 1% to solos. So why would we advertise a rate for solos? We don't really want to sell a solo. Why? Because the cruise fare is our breakeven. We want 2 people buying drinks, merchandise, excursions etc.
@DenaInWyo Жыл бұрын
@@burningblue1254 but they DO advertise the rate for solos. Or at least most lines do. The "per person" rate is front facing. It's not until you get to the bottom line that you see the "doubled" rate (which isn't really doubled, but we've been through all that). That's what makes so many solos feel like they're being charged double. That bit about being based on double occupancy is in the fine print. That is why that same complaining person doesn't bat an eye at the rate for a land hotel.
@burningblue1254 Жыл бұрын
@@DenaInWyo Some cruise lines offer solo cabins, NCL, RCI, Celebrity, and Holland America to name some. If you think that somehow you are going to score a better deal on these cabins versus cruising solo in a standard cabin, likely you won't. Most cruise lines quote double occupancy rates unless you are asking for a quote on a solo cabin. My cruise line quotes double occupancy and its not in fine print. We don't show solo rates nor do we have solo cabins on our ships. You would have to live in a cave not to know standard cruise pricing is based upon double occupancy. The reason is simple, space on cruise ships are at a premium. Our goal like every cruise line, is to maximize revenue per square foot. Solo cabins don't do that nor does having one guest in a double occupancy cabin. Stateroom revenue is our breakeven. The profit is in beverages, excursions, shops, spas, speciality dining etc. If you want to cruise solo you are going to pay a premium to do so. That's life. There are not a lot of solo cabins on cruise ships so if demand is high, prices are high. I know someone who paid $700 less to book the least expensive inside versus $3300 in a solo cabin. She got 147 sq ft instead of a 100. So she didn't get the solo lounge? There's lots of events for singles on cruise ships.

I just got back from my first solo cruise - 13 nights to NZ. It was awesome! The freedom to do as I pleased was great. I didn’t have the nerve for the main dining room but I did enjoy the shore tours. They cost a bomb but I needed the reassurance that they gave me. I was always invited to tag along with others whilst we waited for the bus etc. everyone was super impressed I was going it alone. The common consensus was “oh! I’d never be that brave.” My reply was, “nor was I but it’s fantastic, you get to meet lovely folk like you.” I’m going on another solo cruise at Christmas …over Christmas…did not quite realise that when I booked…ooops, my bad.

@andreagriffiths35127 ай бұрын
@@alicedyment4219 yeah that’s the issue, I’m not a sociable person. Making small talk to strangers is not anything I’m good with. I’m ok with brief things like really short niceties but full conversations where I have to follow along, think of suitable replies, deal with eating, and thanking wait staff = way too much for my ASD brain to handle. And that doesn’t even cover the nicer (read itchy) clothes, people wearing perfume, hearing them chew, the time it takes to eat to be polite so you finish around the same time. I feel like I’m on the edge of a crumbling cliff, wondering when I’ll fall off. But yes, you’re right, I do believe if meeting people is your jam, then it’s an awesome way of meeting people. I’ll just happily pass and grab a bite to eat quickly and return to a cozy spot to read.

I love cruising solo and have since my husband passed away. He never wanted to go on a cruise while he was alive. I like to meet people, though, and I ask for a sharing table so I can eat with others, at least for dinner. If I see an empty chair at a table where people are just sitting down, especially at a buffet or breakfast and lunch, I ask if I could join them. Most people are very gracious. I also join a trivia team early in the cruise, talk to people at the bar, on excursions, even while in line while waiting to board at the terminal. I’ve also met people on CruiseCritic. I would not go on an excursion by myself, though, as a single, older woman (unless it was a cruise line excursion). I use WhatsApp to communicate home, though. Free pictures, texts, etc. all over the world. I also pack a couple of copies of my passport-leave one in the safe, one in my checked luggage, one in a carryon bag.

I am going on my third cruise as a solo traveler in April '24. I admit I've been a bit anxious abt dining by myself in the MDR. I do plan on bringing my phone or tablet and catching up on reading. One little caveat: I am also a server and digital devices can be the arch nemesis of restaurant staff. I just encourage other solo travelers to not get so caught up on their phones that they totally ignore the waiter/waitress when getting your order or asking how your meal is, etc.....also, don't be a camper. As solo cruisers, we have as much right to be in the MDR as others but don't hang at your table longer than necessary. After a nice dinner of 60 to 90 mins duration, take your leave so your fabulous server can turn that table. One thing I plan to do is tip my server a bit extra to make up for me just being one guest. It's a win-win situation.

Yes, born and raised NYer here. Still am! I dine solo. After all, I 'm a customer just like couples and groups. When I occasionally am asked how many, I pleasantly say "just me" and I am seated at a table for two. I find it's also helpful to know the wait staff at places I go to regularly. Once you are known as a "regular" it becomes a place where it feels somewhat like "Cheers"-everybody knows your name! For example, a guy from the neighborhood used to stop by the diner every night for dinner on his way home from work. As soon as the waitress saw him sit down, she already placed his soup and bread down and usually knew his entree. Another friend of mine was terrified to dine alone. She was worried that people would stare at her. I finally told her point blank, "It's NYC. Nobody cares what you are doing. " I suggested she try one of the restaurants in Macy's. I suggested if she felt funny or nervous, just take out her phone and pretend I just told her that I couldn't make it. So, she finally went to Macy's, had a glass of wine with her meal and read a book. She got through it and I congratulated her! Think of it this way - you can make new friends and form a social group while dining solo or just enjoy some alone time. Bon appetit!

I have been on 6 solo cruises and I love it. I can do what I want, whenever I want, how I want or simply not do much at all. It is MY TIME and I cherish it. I don’t care about eating alone, and I like eating in the dining rooms when I travel solo. I always meet new people and I don’t have a problem going to shows or other entertainment venues when I travel solo. There are times I feel like the fares are too high so now I am focusing on cruise lines with solo cabins as well. I take all the necessary precautions when traveling alone and I don’t overindulge in alcoholic beverages. It is so much fun and I have one scheduled in September and one in November.

If you don't want to eat alone, ask for a table to share. Great way to meet others. That's what I've done on my last 6 solo cruises. Before that, my DH and I did the same thing. Hubby was a people person. Loved to talk to anyone. I once told him he could strike up a conversation with a rock! He said, "Yeah, probably could."

I did buy wifi package once and basically I stayed in my phone with internet instead of getting to know people and actually getting rested. So, wifi package is OK but it also expensive. I like meet new people especially during dinner big table

I went on a cruise with a friend. But she would disappear. I ended up doing a lot alone. But met lots of great people

Have to say, on my last cruise (just so happened to be my first) I didn’t get the WiFi package mostly because I wanted to unplug, I didn’t even go in the sports bar to watch football. Best decision ever!! I had such a good time! Didn’t miss it at ALL. Monday morning got back to cape Canaveral, and I had so many text messages, missed calls, Facebook messages, what’s app, and Skype trying to get ahold of me because a problem came up at work and I was the only one who knew how to fix it (I made a binder with everything on my job, showed what to do in several problem scenarios… not that one though). They lived to see another day, and at the same time panicking I was sitting on the ship with a cigar and a margarita

Great advise! Also, if you see an introvert solo cruiser reading a book poolside, we're perfectly content. If you talk to us, you may scare us away. 🤓

I am actually looking for "ALONE ON A CRUISE SHIP" to know if people would tell taking a cruise with no companion is a bad idea or not. I am depressed and need to do something as a therapy. Would you go on a cruise alone or not? Is it different for women? Thanks.

I don't want to travel by myself. I've travelled alone a lot already and I end up just being locked and leaving for few moments. Is there an app that find other people travelling by themselves? I tried to pay for a friend, but I have one or two good friend, Just one single. I don't know what to do. I'm too stressed. I need to wind down but alone it's going to be difficult. I guess u r able to do this and enjoy because u r not a person who feels alone in your daily life. When I travel, which usually is alone, I feel sad seeing other people having fun together and I cannot have that.

I can skip the cabin, and eat at 10 $$$ restaurants for lunch and dinner for a week and drive home each day and have top level cuisine near my home.

Cruised with my wife in April. Went solo in May. Going with wife and 2 adult children in Sep. Solo again in October and a NYE cruise with a friend in Dec. When solo I only pick cruises with 0% single supplement. I love going solo. Love it. Always looking for ways to call, text or email home though. So the fam knows I'm good. I was radio silence in May. Had trouble finding free Wi-Fi ashore and they were uncomfortable with the silence.

It’s my favorite way to cruise as well. Friends always ask to tag alone and I’m like “I’m good” haha. Thanks for watching!

What cruise lines have you found that have 0 solo supplements? I know Norwegian has a like, but I don’t want to go on a ship that large. I also had a bad experience with them years ago.

Zach, do you recommend using a travel agent to get better deals ?
@ZachtheTravelingMan2 жыл бұрын
I recommend a travel agent if you feel uncomfortable booking yourself. They can be a great resource with any questions you may have and also help with all your travel arrangements. Usually they can help you find the best deal and potentially onboard credit.

Thanks for sharing the cruiseplum tip. I'll have to check out it out. I always cruise solo and the worst part about it is the MDR experience. They always seat you at the worst tables and a lot of the times you are seated right next to someone that isn't very sociable. It gets pretty awkward sometimes.
@ZachtheTravelingMan3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Mike! You’re right about that. I’ve been seated right up on other people where I’m essentially at the table with them. It can get awkward. I just bury my face deeper into my phone lol. And eat fast!

My last two cruises have been solo and they've been very successful. I have a theory...strangers are friends I just haven't met yet. I've eaten on my own or shared a larger table with new people. Either works. I have paid the double rate, but it was because of a specific cruise. I have skipped getting off the ship at a couple of ports because they didn't appeal to me. You don't have to have an excursion at each port. Excursions are often over-priced. Feel free to wander on your own. I order a map of each port city I go to and make a few plans about getting around. If I feel that a port is not particularly safe place to wander around by myself, then I use the excursions.

My birthday is in February and was originally going to do a weekend in NYC with friends. Decided I wanted to be somewhere warm though and instead booked a cruise (2 months prior to sale date). There's quite the price and time difference between a weekend trip and a 7 day cruise and as a result I'm going to be solo (which is fine because the 3 cruises I've done before while I was with a group of friends I was constantly off doing my own thing except for dinner). The one negative is there was no solo supplement although the cruise line does offer it on some cruises. I will be using that Cruise Plum website to check out future cruises.

I went on 70 air line trips, 14 Amtrak and 4 cruises alone. It has its draw backs but for the most part, it is pretty cool since I can do whatever I want without some annoying whiner fellow traveler.
