Heidi, I have watched the video of the shot probably around 15 times on a 65 inch screen lol. It looks like a slip and not a complete fall. So as for the buck I think you will see him next year or if you get up there the last few days of this season. As for how it all went down, you did your due diligence in trying to find blood and the buck, searching including the next morning. That is an ethical hunter... So happy to see this. You are a gem Heidi, The whole series was a hit for me and thousands of others. There is nothing more beautiful than a Lady who knows how to fish and hunt, and proves it daily lol. You are a true outdoors enthusiast. I love your videos keep them coming. I have been hunting and fishing for about 42 years. A tail up is what we call a white flag lol and when a deer is hauling butt it is usually up that's why you see it lol. Shooting from a rest and free standing is different and to top it off buck fever may have helped some, but you did look fairly steady when you did shoot. Bad luck this time get him next time. Peace be with you Heidi, keep at it lady...

I agree. It was more important of the natural dip they do when startled. It’s also a myth that rain will wash all the blood away. It has to be an absolute downpour even then you will still find it undercover. Highly unlikely that you would t find at least a small amount of hair although possible. I believe it was a clean miss. I have hunted for 35 years and have a tracking dog with a few notches under his belt. I think she can sleep well at night knowing she was diligent in looking and even the best shots miss if they hunt long enough.

Heidi, I am so impressed with what you did on this hunt. Solo hunting, camping and filming is not an easy task. I enjoyed the videos very much. They inspired this season hunter to work harder. You ask for a story about an unsuccessful harvest. Here’s mine: Year ago I was muzzzleloader hunting the late Dec season. It was a cold evening with 30 mph west winds. I was still hunting the edge of a cedar thicket on the east side of a hill below a winter wheat food plot. I knew deer took cover in this thicken on such days. As slowly hunted the edge, I saw a doe jump the fence onto my farm disappearing behind the break of the hill. I eased up to see the deer. It was 80+ years out. As I was about to shoot, a second BIG doe stepped over the hill only 40 yards away and was staring straight at me. I decided to shoot at the closer, bigger doe. I swung through and pulled the trigger. Both deer ran back to the fence where that had came, jumping it and disappearing. At the site of the shot I only found a pinch of hair; no blood. I searched for her until 2 AM and a couple more hours the next morning. No deer. Like you, I was very upset about potentially wounding a deer that went off to died somewhere. Playing the scene back in my mind, I was pretty sure that I swung through on the shot too far, only grazing her shoulder. The next spring I was harrowing my food plot when I see a doe jump the fence at the same place where the two had escaped the previous season. I stopped my tractor to watch her. She marched straight across the field to me, stopping only 30 yards away. She turned to show me a scare on her left shoulder which would have been the same shoulder I would have grazed 4 months earlier. She stood there a moment then casually walked back the fence, jumped and disappeared. I think she came out to gloat that she was better than me. I was happy that she survived. Watching the slow-mo of the video, I agree with your friend. You hit the deer between the lungs and spine--no man's land. It should survive.
@spriggdude61954 жыл бұрын
Keep your head up. You have the right attitude about turning it into a learning experience. I had a big 8 go down last year during muzzleloader with plenty of blood where I shot it. Deer got up and walked off before I could reload. Never found it and tracked til blood ended. Deer are tough. I've killed deer with multiple old wounds. Make adjustments and go at it again! Enjoyed your videos.

Young lady I have the utmost respect for you and the enormous effort that you went to to recover your dear. I have been hunting for 60 years and I can tell you you have nothing to be ashamed of. What happened to you happens to all hunters .When it happened to me I actually cried for the deer. It is a very sickening feeling. Like you I worried for days but you will recover, you will probably always remember that day,I still do.But that experience made me a better hunter and taught me to become a better shot. I really think you shoot very good and you did all you could do to recover your deer. I really think the wound on your deer was superficial and I can say that from 60years of hunting and guiding other hunters. You are a sweet and compassionate young lady and a shining example of a TRUE HUNTER. WISH THERE WERE MORE LIKE YOU. P.S.ALWAYS TRY TO KEPT YOUR EYE ON THE DEER AT THE IMPACT OF THE BULLET. IF THE DEER ARCHES HIS BACK IT IS USUALLY A FATAL SHOT. SOMETIMES THEY MAY JUMP STRAIGHT UP WHEN ARCHING THEIR BACK . This means learning to deal with the recoil of your rifle, but try to keep the scope on the game. This becomes very difficult with heavy recoiling rifles but for a deer rifle it can be done. I have more but I won't bother you further. GOD BLESS HAPPY HUNTING MOST OF ALL ALWAYS BE SAFE. ⚘⚘⚘

Just discovered your Videos and I am impressed with how you put things together and your caring of all things outdoors. If I can offer a tip an old bow hunter showed me years ago when tracking deer, he carried a small spray bottle with him filled with Hydrogen Peroxide and if he had a problem telling blood from the red leaves he would give it a shot of spray. If it was blood it would foam up. I have used this trick a couple times through the years, hope it helps. Keep up the good work young lady.

Awesome video and awesome series of videos documenting your experience. I know it doesn’t help but it happens to everyone. I know how you feel because it’s happened to me too. It’s happened to us all, but you know what? That’s what makes the experience. If every time we fished , or hunted we were successful it wouldn’t be what the outdoors are all about. Going hunting and fishing are EXACTLY about what you experienced. Highs, lows, everything in between. I can tell you this, I for one, enjoy hunting and fishing for those experiences like you had, I want to work for my rewards, I don’t want them to be easy. I want the agony of defeat, so I can come back next time, use what I learned during my failures so that I can then enjoy the thrill of victory. Next season I fully expect you to be right out in that tent again, making your hot soup, waiting for the sun to come up to see if you’ll be successful or not. As much as I’m waiting for my own deer season next year, I’m also waiting for yours.

When you hunt long enough, and shoot enough, eventually you're going to lose one. Sucks, but like you said, it's one of those things. As far as second guessing yourself for not taking one of the other deer that presented a shot...you had your reasons for passing them up, and there's no future in sitting there second guessing about it after the fact. Also, you nailed EXACTLY why I don't watch any of the TV hunting shows. Reality is sometimes, or even most times, coming home empty handed, or having to interrupt your hunt to deal with a family emergency, or getting rained on when you're not expecting to... Yeah, I enjoyed the series, and am definitely looking forward to more like this! Stay after 'em, Heidi!

Couple years back I had a Desert Bighorn Sheep tag... I ended up shooting at a very respectable Ram... could've sworn I got a good hit on him... we looked and looked, nothing... finally after a day in a half of being in that area we finally found him... so many emotions hit me over that course of time... definitely not a easy experience to go through. Respect that you went your hardest trying to find that deer. Last Mule Deer hunt I did, I went by myself trying to find one in some very high country... from a rock cliff I spotted a nice 3 pt buck late in the day (over 600 yards away) bedded down in some high brush... I waited for in the morning to make a move, the buck was still there so I ended up going on a stalk... the wind started blowing down hill, towards where I'd last seen him... couldn't find him anymore through the binos... so I looked all around and back up towards that rock cliff I was on... he was going up the hill 🤦🏽♂️ and eventually he went out of sight. I questioned myself hard for making that stalk. Also that very same day my truck broke down lol🤷🏽♂️💯💯

Nice flat round, M77, and the Leopold scope. The ruger of mine with Leopold scope I have not moved the sights in over 30 years and still touch rounds at 100 yards. The scope mounts for the rugers are very durable. This year I am changing the primers that I use, powder and bullet, so I will have to adjust the sights finally. About 10 years ago someone hit a doe in the leg, and through the winter I was clearing an area of clover with just a covering of snow. We had up to 3 ft that winter of snow cover. Her fawns broke trail along with a few past fawns with their fawns, 9 in total. There were two fawns she had over the years with white half way up the side and both were there. By the end of January she was walking and had 2 fawns in the spring. They would stand and watch me clear and area of snow, then eat while I watched them from the cabin. It is always funny standing in a field with deer eating around you with out a care in the world.

I lost buck a few years ago because I was using mechanical broadheads, thought I made a good shot, found the broad head later and didn’t open! Since then I only used fixed broadheads. I was like you extremely upset, scoured the earth for the deer only found trace amounts of blood. I went home got my blue tick coonhound to help she couldn’t find it either. Keep your chin up and practice shooting, practice makes perfect. When you have confidence you can control buck fever. That 260 rem is plenty of gun and highly accurate, very comparative to a 6.5 creedmoor. Good luck next time

Heidi, I especially love your passion of the outdoors in this series of videos! The camping segment was amazing to watch this beautiful woman solo set up her equipment and being so prepared was very cool ! I am a fisherman and shooter its any ones bet if your shot was a good placement but i would lean towards a miss due to lack of blood and blood trail. Obviously you are a fantastic shooter and bet that next time you will harvest your share of deer again! Thanks for sharing and for being such a wonderful young lady! Women and men of the outdoors world are really enjoying your adventures!!!!!!!!

Better luck next time! Just goes to show, if you hunt long enough, you will have these types of stories. It takes a lot of courage to put yours out there for everyone to see. Keep your chin up and hopefully next season will be better. Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

I had one last year and I couldn't find a drop of blood for about 200 yards. Then right before I spotted the deer he started pouring blood . And I've had one to show no blood until it laid down . Keep your head up because you did a very good job anyways. I enjoyed your videos
