► ABOUT THIS HIKE
In early August 2023 I hiked the Laugavegur Trail. The Laugavegur Trail is probably Iceland's most famous hiking trail that showcases some of Iceland's most stunning natural landscapes. The trail stretches approximately 55 kilometers (34mi) from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. Often the trail is combined with the Fimmvörðuháls, which adds another 25 kilometers to Skógar on the ocean in the south. With filming I completed about 100 kilometers (62mi) of hiking in 48 hours.
On day 1 I took the bus from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar where I started my hike. The hike passes by the colorful rhyolite mountains around Landmannalaugar, over infamously windy pass of Hrafntinnusker to the green valley of Álftavatn, straight from paradise. I passed the Alftavatn Hut and camped at the Hvanngil Hut. On day 2 I continued the trail passing the moonlight landscape of the Emstrur (Botnar) valley to get to Þórsmörk. I passed the Emstrur Hut, the Hattafell mountain (green mountain in black sand) and the Langidalur Hut. I camped the night at the Básar Hut. I got an early start on day 3 to beat the weather that was expected later that day and started the Fimmvörðuháls Trail. I climbed up to the Fimmvörðuháls pass and passed by the Magni volcano that erupted in 2010. At the pass you can see 2 massive glaciers on both sides of the pass: Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökul. I had lunch at the Fimmvörðuháls Hut and descended down towards the ocean via the Baldvínskali Hut to 'waterfall alley' where the trail ends at Skógafoss, the most famous waterfall of Iceland.
Interested in doing this hike? Check out the travel guide (www.thatch.co/guide/3khmc6ihi...) which explains everything you need to know: how to make reservations, how to get there, what to see along the way, when to go, the weather, and much more. Included is a Custom Google Maps and GPX-files.
This is an ambient film without dialog.

My son (7yo) and I hiked the trail this past August and it was an unbelievable experience for the both of us. I truly hope that you and your son can get out to enjoy this experience together also. Sharing this experience has made our bond even stronger and is something that we will never forget! I’ll have a video up from our hike in a couple of weeks if you’re looking to see the experience of hiking the Laugavegur with a 7 year old. Happy Hiking 🥾

Back in 2019 my wife and I did the Ring Road by campervan with a brief excursion to Landmannalaugar for quick look and a day hike. We did about a 9 mile loop that day then had a nice overnight in the van at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field there at the trailhead before departing continue on with our Ring Road plan. We were so impressed with the landscape we saw in that little sample we vowed to come back and spend more time in that area. Headed back now in July 2024 for another 18 day trip. To kick the trip off we are doing this through hike, tenting at the huts, then catching bus in Skogar back to Reykjavik to grab another campervan and likely head up to the Westfjiords & Hornstrandir. My wife is adventurous and typically game for anything, but she doesn't backpack with me often. This incredible video clinched it for her and she's all in.

Out of all of the Laugavegur hike videos, this has to be the one that captures the true feel, nature, and depicts exactly what it is like to hike this amazing trail. My 7yo son and I recently completed this hike in late August and it was such an unbelievable experience. He has been pushing to go on longer hikes ever since. I think he’s caught the hiking/travel bug 😂 I’ve been putting our video together (taking a while with a newborn in the house) but I am hoping to depict the beauty of the trail, the bond of a father and son, and also hope to encourage others to take their children out on adventures with them! Children thrive in nature and believe it or not… but they may just like the adventure more than yourself. Truly amazing video Harmen, love your work as always & happy hiking 🥾

Hi Harmen, we shortly met along the Laugavegur on your first hiking day above Alftvatn. Since that day, I was waiting for this video of the Laugavegur/Fimmvörðuháls trails. I am really impressed by the quality of all your videos. This one is, once again, a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing. You were very lucky with the forecast during those 3 hiking days. I already walked the Laugavegur/Fimmvörðuháls trails from south to north in 2014 and the weather situation was much more difficult. This year, I discovered scenaries that I didn't saw at all 9 years ago. I also did those trails in three days but had one day off in Þórsmörk (Langidalur) because I felt some pain in my leg. That forced me to get some rest there. I was very surprised to see that there were clouds and rain on the other side of the Fimmvörðuháls on the third day of your trip. In Langidalur, the sun was shining all day long. Crossing the Fimmvörðuháls was quite difficult the day after : wind and rain ruined the party. Mist and clouds were masking the lanscape all around. I took a photo of you near Alftvatn, but there is no way here to send it to you. Thanks again for for this wonderfull video. It was nice to meet you ! 😀
