That's the sort of lesson I need. I want to know what you're thinking. If I know that, I can see what you're playing so I can do it to. This is exactly what I like the best on your channel.

I think alot of intermediate players understand what scale to play over a chord. At least generally. I think alot of us are more curious about the particulars of phrasing and changing key/mode during lines. Playing the appropriate scale over each chord is certainly great practice, but it only really gets you about 25 percent of the way. Its the phrasing that is much more elusive for students. For this video, it would have been great if you had just done a walkthrough of one of your improvised solo's. Going through each line. Talk and explain the rhythm of each phrase. Go past the scales, and talk about melody, motiff, and variation. I think that approach would be like an accelerated version of how many people use to learn before internet which was transcribe a million solos by ear for many years. For myself, i'm a fairly advanced player, but i'm always curious about how different players approach standards like this song. I already knew what scales to play over this tune. I was really just looking to hear what you're thinking and study some of your lines. But you're blowing through them quickly, and with an 8 second reverb tail. LOL Kinda hard to follow even for good players.

My thoughts exactly.

yeah, just because you know what scales to play, doesn't mean you'll magically play brilliant lines. First you need to learn lots of lines and analyze them.

At some point in my life I am gonna spend an entire year just learning ISL solos. I feel like it's a formative work for many of the greats!

You should do how to solo over the outro of "Stone In Love" by Journey. Amazing progession but I have no idea what scales to use over it to sound tasteful.

Thanks John, great lesson. Is it possible that I Only buy this backingtrack for practice in stead of becoming a patreon member? Thanks Edwin ps looking forward to your next "how to solo over" lesson.
