Yeh snow shoes were invented for good reason; good on you Scotty for not listening to the naysayers going forward. The bit about ‘Australian conditions’ was hilarious. BIG ups to your wife for letting you head out!

I used to winter camp in the White Mountains Every year for about 18 years.. Always bring them with you, strap them to your pack. We used to call it post holing. It's easy for someone to comment from the comfort of the living room, but to be out in the elements doing it is very different thing. Looking forward to your new and exciting times in the future. Congratulations to you and Laura it's awesome to be a dad. Treasure every day because in the blink of an eye they grow up. Cheers Mate!👍

I took my daughter out for an overnight snow camp past porcupine and I haven't before but I am so soooooooo glad we brought snow shoes. I was post holing past my knees! They barely weigh anything either so not hard to strap on pack if you don't need them in the end.

For sure don't listen to Silly's plastic bag boot tip 😆 Your feet end up sweating a tonne (especially when hiking) and the sweat pools in your socks without having a way to escape and cools down making the feeling even worse.

Another great video from a NZ follower who lives near Arthur's Pass in the South Island. About the snowshoes,....you're so much more experienced and in tune with the proper gear to take than the bozo's who said you don't need them. Snowshoes are like wearing tennis racquets on your feet and work so well at keeping you 'on' the snow and not in it. I know you know this. In future, use your own wisdom and knowledge that you've acquired through time in the hills....and not on a couch like the other commentee's. ......

I did snow shoeing last Tuesday at Dead Horse Gap. We walked up in 50km winds. Mont 4 season tent was sturdy with the howling winds around us. The guide also gave me outer coverings like gaiters to wear over my hiking shoes, kept my feet toasty warm. We did use snow shoes higher up as it not possible to skin up on skies with the weather on Monday.

Used the X-Mid Pro 2 a few times in blizzard conditions on the Main Range, and it held up well it fully guyed out and pegged out. I find the Durston super storm worthy, provided (and it's a big caveat), provided it is properly pitched and the pegs fully locked in. I always bring the snow shoes and add the snow baskets, even if I end up carrying them the whole trip. Learned my lesson the hard way after having to dig myself out twice on one trip heading up Dead Horse Gap. Got myself some La Sportiva winter boots, too, after my feet froze in the snow. They're heavy, but so worth it. Warm wishes from the North Shore, buddy

Hey Scotty , I found wearing good water resistant insulated boots with good sox plus a couple of large freezer bags over the sox does the trick , tuck the freezer bags into the top of your soxs so if any snow gets into the boots it wont get down into the soxs , keeps your feet dry and extra warm . then it doesnt matter if your boots get damp or wet , your feet and sox will remain dry . give it a try next time . love your adventures and congrats on your new bub .

I sleep in a tent with my dog at a caravan park on the yorke peninsula this winter. I had winds like that hammering my tent all night, it was bringing the walls in. The dog was stressing badly, i ended up putting her in the front seat of the car, and ended up sleeping in the back. I figured if the tent was still there in the morning id be lucky. It was lol.

Congrats on your family! And +1 to a snow tent, insulated boots and snow shoes! I was taught to 'stamp down' where I plan the tent footprint to be when snow camping, which compresses the snow and means it doesn't melt/go uneven underneath you overnight. It didn't look like you did this in the video so if that's the case, you may want to experiment with that? I especially love that this makes it much easier to dig a 'cellar' under your vestibule, giving you more space to put your boots on, or to store bags out of the weather. I wonder also in weather like you had if it'd be fun to experiment with building a snow wall around the tent to reduce direct wind?

Man, that looked like a rough bout. I've been hammocking on ridges with storms that would pop grommets on the tarp. Thundering, lightning, pouring rain, cool wind dragging all night...... waking up to a burst of thunder, the roof broken loose, soaking wet trying to become cognizant of what's going on 😂. Luckily it was around 40 something Fahrenheit. Which, with wind drag, is still cold..... just not freezing cold. The cold storms I've experienced sub 20°F, luckily I never got soaked. I've been cold and I've been soaked, but luckily I've never been too soaked, AND too cold at the same time. It's hard doing anything with the heat sapped out of ya. In the tent warmed up is one thing, but getting out the next morning drained of heat is another. Especially with cold winds cutting through ya. But, there's something eerily serene during cold months in the wilderness. Gaps between the wind where things get abnormally quiet. It's a beautiful contrast from the sounds of life during warm months. Helps ya appreciate nature's music.
