Solo Women Van life | Gibraltar | Van Breakdown & Farmer Protests

This week we walk across the border into Gibraltar from La Linea, Spain to take a cable car up to the Rock and visit St Michaels Cave. We see so many monkey, cross Windsor Bridge and do the famous Sky Walk. We also experience a break down and get stranded for almost a week before finally setting off and getting stuck 3 times in the 'farmers protests' through Spain where the farmers were blocking the roads with their tractors. However despite all the drama we finally made it all the way to Portugal. The Joys of Van Life!

Winters in the UK can be miserable especially when living on a boat and with all the canal lock closures for maintenance, I began to feel a little trapped. So for the next 2 months I decided to join up with another fellow solo female traveller and set off across Europe in our two very old camper vans in search of sunshine and to experience Van life at it's best.
I hope you enjoy something a little different as I swap boat life for van life.

Breakdowns are less stressful with friends around and I'm a stressor (is that a word!!) Glass half empty me sigh. That's one thing about New Zealand lol you can only drive from the North Island to the South Island using the ferry but you are still in the same country lol. Take care loving this adventure. =-)

Another great vlog. Did you know that, if the Germans had managed to take The Rock (during WWII) there were plans in place for some of the British Army to be walled up inside The Rock (with a year of supplies) to monitor what was happening in the area (such as counting numbers and types of vessels in the harbour). I saw a program showing the tunnels that were used during the Wars, and they are very extensive. "The rain left Spain and is accompanying Heidi again!". The caves were lovely. Narrowboaters have to get used to being dripped on in tunnels (but there are some that are 'damper' than others).

The monkeys on the rock prevented you two from being taken over by the French and Spanish pirateers. Their custom of greeting one another is so Great Britain too. ( Don't be rude!) Oh my gosh - what an episode, life eh? Unpredictable. About 10 things crammed into a half-hour. Gibrraltar and monkeys and walking. Couldn't do the glass-way walk. Sandra's being very calm and collected, but we'll look forward to seeing her later, and the dogs, and also your friend. Beautiful camp up before the final one. Glad Sandra's van was fixed. I keep forgetting how small, and yet large and jam-packed Europe is. Enjoy your time, thanks for not throwing the camera and tripod onto the floor and having a pirate tantrum (which you never would) because First Mate Bonny is a good wee emotional anchor. Bummer about the van problem but at least it's a simple fix. I would have just stayed on the site you were at and have someone there help you phone around garages to see which one had the starter in stock. Maybe you just wanted to avoid paying fees for further days. I am in the middle of planning flights, train and car hire for a trip through Spain and Portugal. I could drive my own car all the way (from NE Scotland) but I prefer to fly South then journey on from wherever I can get a flight to from Aberdeen. Or Edinburgh more likely, as there are more destination options. Your trip to Gibraltar reminded me of a three week tour of duty there with the TA many decades ago. There was no gondola up the rock. It was walk or small minibus only. The macaque colony had a few who were very good at stealing food or other stuff from tourists, which I see hasn't changed. St Michael's cave had an army pipe band playing in it on my visit. Rod Stewart's 'Sailing' sounded terrific played in that natural theatre.

Hello Heidi, Bonny, Sandra and Sandra's two fur kids ... OK, so you had to show us the glass bridge - I held on tight to my computer chair for that part of the video. Yesterday was my 76th birthday and I feel like this trip has been a birthday gift to me. I am loving this trip and I have learned so many things (monkeys and genital rubbing as an example), not so sure how I will share some of the information I've gathered but love it all. When you are traveling like you are you can only control how you respond to changes in circumstance and you've done that well. So, save my place on Polly .. Must visit Gib and meet some of my ancestors 🐒. A great thing to do in Porto is to do all the Port tastings, the city itself is a bit too touristic now, but there are tours of the vineyards with tastings in the caves.

I sailed into Gibraltar years ago on a 56ft yacht. It was a lovely day but as we approached, a wind came howling down the face of that rock and as we were still under full sail it smacked us practically horizontal. We work done in the marina in the constant shade from the clouds funneling off the mountain peak eventually walking across the runway to Spain to get some sun. I remember Gibraltar as a bit of a dogs toilet although maybe I was dancing around monkey poo. You brought back memories of happy days.

While you are in Portugal imagine you are in California, USA. The weather pattern is almost exactly the same. (Western facing coastline and similar latitude with warm water from the Caribbean flow). The geography matches as well. Have a nice visit. The people are warm and friendly. The port in Porto is always worth the visit! 😍👍

My mates van had dodgy startamotor and she used to put it in reverse and jump it as she turned the key she’d pull the clutch up and it would always start. Anyway apart from that yr adventures are looking amazing! ❤
