The thing with Joe that is kinda unique is the humor he injects into his phrasing. Badass clown that has been throwing it down for decades.

This is Vicki's Husband. I remember being 12 years old when "Turn To Stone" would come on the radio in the family car. I would give my Dad a dollar[Pretty hard to come by when you were 12 in the early seventies] to turn this tune up! Joe Walsh. Dark, Heavy, Heartfelt. He is a true master. He certainly made a believer out of this kid! Dave as always, great, professional, and correct lessons. Would love to share a pint and war stories.

Joe Walsh is as great choice. His playing has always been sublime. As Rick Beato says about Jeff Beck, 'there is never a bad note'...every note deserves its space and plays its role. Ditto with Joe, who grew up listening to Jeff and even did a Jeff w/the Yardbirds tune, 'Lost Woman', when with the James Gang. And you are quite right; there is no mindless shredding or flashy fretwork. Beyond playing Joe also knows structure, tone, tension and release, dynamics...gear and guitars. Like you, I'm not a big Eagles fan. But when Joe Walsh joined I paid attention. He and Don Felder were such a great team. Which reminds me, Felder is also a worthy consideration for one of your shows. Like Joe, the strength of their playing often lies in the subtleties. Indeed, when I saw them on the 'Hotel California' tour it was Felder who made the biggest impression on me - great tone, articulate technique and overall great playing. Thank you for this. I love your show. You know your stuff, play very well and sound great. But as much as anything, you are subtle in your delivery, articulate, and maintain a subdued and easy-flowing delivery throughout. Thank you.

Thank you for this David. Joe Walsh is the reason I began playing way back in 1979. I stumbled on a guys record collection at a dinner party he hosted and mom dragged me there. I quickly got away from the other adults by going to the room his records and stereo were and found an album called "The James Gand" forget the album title but there was a sonmg called Funk # 48 (not #49 ) and was rolling around bustin a gut cuz it was both groovin and the vocals had some "{donk-ba-dank- ba da- de- donk-donk) part and he had an old acoustic in the room as well. I picked it up and figured a few things out by ear ( perfect pitch to find out way later) and on the ride home I told mom "I want to play the guitar". My journey had begun. Joe Walsh is the reason for it all, even though I love 1000 others as well. Joe was the birth, the beckoning hand to tell me "Hey kid ya gotta play in front of people if you want to be a guitarist. Well, I am a guitarist.

Hey what up man. I'm out running around in the madness getting ready for tomorrow. I can't wait to check this out. I have really became a bigger fan of his work over the past few years. I love his work with the eagles and The James Gang is one of Rocks greatest 3 piece's. I'm almost positive that Adam Jones reached out to him for using the talk box on Jambi. Anyways this will be great a lesson like always. Take care man. Hope you and your family and friends have a great Thanksgiving. ✌️ Peace ✌️ man

Joe Walsh - an underrated legend in music. it took me over two decades of worshipping shred gods before discovering him. what a catalog of great songs from such a creative guitarist and songwriter. full of soulful melodies and harmonies too. you can tell Joe Walsh knew what he was doing, and had a great grasp on theory and the fretboard. a true icon.

Wow! Dave! great lesson. Who would've thought there would be such power to solo within that space of notes. I saw The James Gang with the Byrds. Byrds were the headliner but do to technical difficulties. Byrds played the warmup. They were fanstastic but when the James Gang came on these took the house down. Thanks for sharing these techniques of Joe's playing.

You're Rockin it Bro. I never liked the Eagles (way to country for this hard rocker) until Joe joined the band. But my wife and I had been listening to Joe since the James Gang and had his solo albums too! PS: Loved your Steve Howe solos vid! Sad to realize my hero Chris Squire is gone.

Thanks for these really nice lessons! In the future, could you show us some of Joe's funky rhythm playing like that funky wah in the song Stop from Yer Album? Plus, I was watching one of those Saturday Night concerts shows in the mid 70's (ABC in Concert, Don Kirschner's, etc.) and I think it was the You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind tour and Joe was doing one of his funky jams in I think Meadows. It was phenomenal, but I've never been able to find it here on KZbin or anywhere... and if I remember correctly, he was playing a Black Les Paul. I remember he was on a few of those Saturday Night concert tv shows in the mid 70's.

Hey, Dave. The "Signature Joe Walsh Bending Lick" at 9:38 -- the chromatic run part of it on the B -- I associate that lick with Jimmy Page, as sort of a classic JP lick (sometimes JP does the chromatic on the high E). Do you think Joe got that from Page, or vice versa? They've been lifelong friends. (And yeah, they probably both got it from one of the 3 Kings).

The most unique guitarists are Joe, George Harrison, and David Gilmour. There are a lot of great blues based lead guitarists like Clapton and Buffy Guy but those three were the most unique IMO.

Tell me if I am wrong. I am not a guitar player or musician. But every time I hear Joe I hear down bends, not up. That's why it sounds different. It seems to me the natural thing to do is play up bends so it never sounds right when someone is figuring Joe out..
