I would add...Audibly vocalizing the degree( ie 4th 5th) that you are playing, so you always know where in the mode you are. By knowing the degree instead of pitch name in the shape, it easily transposes from key to key

If I’m not mistaken; you’re using the caged system for various chord inversions to help lead the way to soloing into the next chord? I believe that is what you were doing. I get the modes are in there based on the scale degrees, and seeing where they are at in relation to the chord you’re using or going to in the progression, but it also looks like you are creating a melody (be it whatever mode) using the degrees within that chords structure. So it looks like (to me) you’re using open g first position and then soloing through the various inversions of that chord down to the higher register of the neck, while using the root 3rd and 5th to target chord tones into the next and out of one into the other. So for example moving from G to C because G is the 5th of the chord C, therefore knowing it‘s degree within the g chord (wherever you’re at in the neck) makes it easier to transition to the other chord (in this case the C) because you now know you’re at the 5th note of the C chord and it will lead you to an inversion of that c chord from wherever you’re at in the neck based off of the G chord. That’s how I understood the video. I could be wrong lol.
@BrettPapa
@BrettPapa 4 жыл бұрын
Thats it more or less. CAGED just helps you find the root, third, and fifth of all your chords in the progression all over the neck. When you combine that with your scale shapes its easy to solo and hit the target notes from your progression all over the neck. Thanks for watching!!

An interesting example is Nightrain by GnR - song is in the key of A-ish :D first solo is in B dorian, D major then they switch to A major and ending solo is in A minor xD. Slash throws modes here and there - Paradise city solos are based around minor pentatonic, major and mixo as well. GnR are always fun to play since there are so many notes you can hit in a solo :D

Thank you. I really like your lessons, and understand the CAGED theory, and what you are doing when you apply scales and modes when moving from one version of a chord shape to another inversion, or to a new chord. However, I have great difficulty memorizing/picturing where the notes of a scale and/or chord are if I am trying to move up the neck toward the pickups, or down toward the nut. Previously learned patterns often 'disappear' for me, or if I can 'see' the notes, I seem to move through them 'in order' - it is really difficult for me not to move to the next note up...Question - Do you have any exercizes you can suggest to help me picture things better?
@willabestorms6059
@willabestorms6059 5 жыл бұрын
I have the same problems... What I have found helpful is to practice STRICTLY using arpeggios to move from one cord to the next, it works for me. I have found using two arpeggios right after each other, helps with the longer measures. I am also discovering inversions...

Not sure I understand this lesson. It sounds to me like you’re playing the Major Scale over each chord i.e. the relative approach to modes as opposed to highlighting the sound of each modes intervals... Is this correct?

Memorize all of the pentatonic shapes. The root, 3rd, and 5th refers to chord tones from the chords in the progression in this case. It is great to learn the degrees of the scales too though!

@BrettPapa
@BrettPapa 6 жыл бұрын
Just keep working at it. Start very slowly and just try to hum a simple melody. Then try to find those notes on the guitar. It helps to try to develop a theme. Think nursery rhymes. Just play a very simple progression and then fool around with the notes in the chords and try more to think about the scale. See if that helps. Thanks for watching!
