@@sonicheroxd5767 Y'know, I'm just going to be real. Owen is super popular NOW because of the tragedy of his passing. Back then, Owen was just a mid-card comedy act. If Vince had allowed Owen to leave, it wouldn't have made a difference in the wrestling wars. Yes, we might have gotten some awesome WCW matches: Benoit vs. Owen, Flair vs. Owen, Eddie Guerra vs. Owen, etc...but knowing what goofs WCW were as far as story telling, nothing would have come of anything matches. They were ate up with NWO crap and Hogan ruled that promotion and wouldn't let any one else that he didn't personally love get anything significant. Had Owen gone to WCW, he would have wrestled until his contract was up, then probably just retired to live out his days with Martha and his kids, because he would have made enough money to do so.

It's amazing how Bret and to a certain degree Shawn (I think he feels more religious shame/guilt for his conduct back then, hence his questionable memory...or it's his drug abuse then) are more truthfully honest about that whole fiasco with Montreal, yet WWE just refuses to tell the truth. Pritchard's blatant lie was F'N annoying. With that said, I believe the reason for this interesting take on history is that someone is under investigation and they need to paint him in as good a light as possible. Because if you were to really look at the events of Montreal objectively, you see that the Blame lies squarely on Vince McMahon shoulders. All that turmoil because he couldn't keep his precious BoyToy under control or put him in his place when he got out of line, to say nothing of his blatant violations of Bret's contract.

Could you imagine everything we missed out on? Stone Cold vs. Bret 3, Owen vs. Bret (but the roles are reversed!), Shawn vs. Bret, Angle vs. Bret, Cena vs. Bret, Mankind/Dude Love/Cactus Jack vs. Bret (Say what you want, but IMO Shawn and Mankind had an awesome match, and I think Bret could have really put even more of a shine on Foley if give a proper match and build), Rock vs. Bret, Eddie Guererro vs. Bret, Malenko vs. Bret, Benoit vs. Bret (this time with the better over all, IMO, storytelling of WWE instead of WCW), Lesner vs. Bret, Undertaker vs. Bret. Bret was the ultimate performer and worked his ass of in his craft. He also respected the hell out of the business and just the thought that Bret wouldn't have dropped the belt to Shawn and ended up walking into WCW with the WWE championship is utterly ludicrous. Bret grew up in the business and he had too much respect for Vince and the WWE that he wouldn't have burned bridges just for a shock moment. A performer of his stature doesn't need to do that shit to get over and he didn't want to leave anyways.

Even still to this day, in a post kayfabe landscape, marks still get worked up about who's side to take. Everyone came out ahead in this situation. Vince becomes the biggest Heel, Shawn is Champ, Bret gets to go to WCW to make millions without actually "losing" and the belt stays with the company and Bischoff can't use it against them.

I think people forget just how bad Bret’s ego was as well in 1997. I understand Bret came up in the business in a wrestling family. Wrestling is in his blood there is no doubt about that; however Bret’s pride was always his downfall. He cared too much about himself and his legacy, so much to his detriment. What I hate seeing is that Shawn supposedly never jobbed to Bret but that’s all he did from when he was coming up; if you even look at their W/L records against eachother Bret has well over 70 wins and Shawn had like 10 (and all of them weren’t clean). People also forget that when Shawn was supposed to drop the strap to Bret at WM 13, per Bret’s words he was going to “break Shawn’s leg, make him tap, win the championship, and flip off Shawn”. And trust me Shawn was no saint, but he admits that. I also totally get why Vince would pair the two up for Survivor Series. Everyone was in the wrong at the time but people like to forget Shawn’s perspective and Vince’s perspective which I think is a little idiotic when you have a convoluted situation such as the Montreal Screwjob where EVERYONE is at faulf

I don’t really even look at this as anyone’s fault bc that screw job was a work lol Listen Vince couldn’t afford Bret & told him to make a deal with Eric. All 3 men made a deal & only Bret has never admitted to being in on it. The moment Shawn wins, the camera pans over to Bret. Why wouldn’t the camera pan over to the winner of the match?? Lol That entire thing is a work bro. Bret was gonna do his WCW deal & come back to WWE but then Owen died the next year which caused real bitterness & then the Goldberg kick happened. If u look at the screw job everyone came out of it looking amazing: Bret now the biggest babyface in wrestling (WCW just dropped the ball on all the heat Bret had), Shawn the champ, Vince saved money & at least at that time knew Bret would come back (& now he’s a monster heel)

I'll give Shawn credit in knowing Taker was the bigger name. I'm sure even back then, Taker probably was the locker room leader, and much like Andre before, Taker was a special attraction, in that you could put him in the Marquee, even if no title in his match, and he'll sell tickets. As far as A&E's retelling of Montreal, I'm just picturing Obi Wan using his "from a certain point of view" line. 😉😂🤣

Bret was a bigger name as well. This was the first time they were establishing Shawn as a headliner who would carry the company. Bret has already done that and, even though business went down from when Hogan was on top, Bret did draw well overseas, had a track record of delivering good main event matches, and had the experience of representing the company as champ (e.g., in media, leading the locker room, making appearances, staying clean, helping others get over, etc.). Shawn was a step in the dark, so it is surprising that he would say that they can pay Taker more but not Bret. From what I understand, Shawn was not up to the challenge of being the champion in 96; he was reportedly difficult to work with and used lots of drugs. He caved under the pressure

When I hear about Bret's reaction to Shawn not "returning the favour" in 1997, I just think... how many jobs did Shawn do for Bret earlier in the decade? You could argue it _was_ Bret's turn to put him over more than once or twice. Did he think _WrestleMania XII_ made up for all the times Shawn lost to him beforehand? Did he think only the IC ladder match and _Survivor Series 1992_ counted? Or am I wrong, and _did_ they only have those two matches prior to WM XII, with no houseshow bouts? Surely not. Frankly, perhaps Bret had his own "That don't work for me, brother" moment in '97.
@kevinlee99292 жыл бұрын
Bret putting over Shawn at WM 12 trumps that Survivor Series 92 and thosr house show matches by a mile. The next year when the roles were to be reversed. Shawn magically "Loses his smile". Only to be on commentary during the main event. Then return to the ring a few months later. Shawn was a complete rick back then. And everyone will say that. Including him.
@DLRX2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinlee9929 Agreed, Shawn was put over HUGE at WM12 whereas Bret's first title win wasn't even televised (put on VHS months later). And who cares if Bret went over Shawn more times than the other? Macho Man Randy Savage never even got a pinfall victory over Hulk Hogan but he still did business and his stock never dropped. Shawn should've had the same attitude, if he did him and Bret could've made even more money working with each other for years.
@AndrewNewZealand2 жыл бұрын
Starting with Survivor Series '92, Bret was the logical winner of that match, Bret had just won the big belt, Shawn had just cleanly won the IC belt from Bulldog who had beaten Bret for it, which legitimized him as a top contender, but nobody would've seriously thought going in that Shawn would win the big belt just a few weeks after his first IC or that Bret would lose the big belt so soon. The point is though, in the heat of the moment Shawn DID look like he might win, the match went about 25 minutes and near the end Shawn hit the superkick then his "teardrop" side suplex. If Bret had lost the belt on his first big defence, especially to a guy who'd only just proved himself a contender, he'd have looked like a dud champion, a booking mistake and Shawn, while a good heel, he gave a good promo before the match, was not yet the kind of heel that would draw big money from people wanting to see him get his arse kicked and lose his belt. The point is, as someone pointed out, the stakes at SSeries '92 were nowhere near what they were at WM 12 even if it was the same belt on the line.

Its stupid of wwe to lie about monetral and get away with this. Its most discussed and write about event in wrestling history. Bret Hart was a great wrestler and he was willing to do business it was Shawn who was full of shit using his influence with vince to get his way. I totally agree Bret Hart could have more matches with Shawn which have been great. Even if Bret was healthy and could come to WWE in 2001-2 and have that run where he could have great fueds with Vince angle, jericho, rock, triple h, and even shawn. Its such a loss for fans.

'97 Bret Hart is where he became amazing in all ways, wrestling, promos...Anti-american Bret with his family couldn't be beat. DX with Michaels and HHH unfortunately were where the US was going in the late 90s (petty trolling) The biggest winner from Bret Hart going to WCW was Steve Austin, who probably wouldn't have won the world championship as soon as he did had Bret remained. It would be interesting to see Solomonster try to imagine what WWF would have been like had the Hart Foundation stuck around (I imagine Michaels and HHH would have rejoined the KLIQ in Atlanta...)

I've never thought anyone involved in Montreal comes out looking all that sympathetic, at least as it relates specifically to that incident. Shawn was a complete jerk. For all the marks that say Bret was a whiny baby about the whole situation even years later, they should also remember how many livelihoods HBK alongside the Kliq had destroyed backstage with some for laughs, the fact he did some things if done today would have made him a prime Speaking Out target, was an absolute weasel when it came to tattling on others to Vince and he didn’t lose a family member on a PPV because of an amateur. No matter how much Bret did wrong on his end, HBK’s wrong will always stacked up more in comparison and the only reason he’s not another Bruiser Brady today is because he’s got the victor of the Monday Night Wars in his corner. Imagine he pulled his antics in ECW... HBK really is like a real life Persona 5 villain with all the backstage stories about him.

.....just can't sympathize with Bret at all. I'm not saying what Vince did was right or not, but it wasn't anyone else's decision to make in the first place. Bret is/was the classic example of the type of person who says he's doing what he's doing for you and others but is really about himself above anything else. Sorry brother, he's not much different from Hogan after all. Who has "creative control" and chooses to exercise it when they do and why? Yes, Vince McMahon is a narcissistic, egomaniacal, control freak, and ass-hole. Fuck Vince but that doesn't mean Bret deserves any sympathy either. I don't care what Shawn said, and I would say the same to him and any other wrestler who thinks they're above what's best for the company. It's not up to either of you to decide who wins or loses unless you're gonna settle it in a real fight on your own time and own dollar. If Bret could see past his own ego to realize that life has to go on after he leaves and if that means losing to someone he doesn't want to lose to, so be it. Somebody had to lose to him. Sure, there were probably many so many things Vince could have done to avoid this situation but at the end of the day, whether any of us likes it or not, it was HIS business, which means it was HIS decision to make PERIOD as he's the one writing the checks. The rest of us are just talking.

Nah Bret had every reason to tell Vince and Shawn to fuck off and stop mistreating him, Bret helped way more better people in the industry like Austin and Rock in more meaningful ways, Vince wasn't right just because he's the owner.
