From Wikipedia:
"Solsbury Hill" is a song about a spiritual experience atop Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England. Gabriel wrote the song after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis, of which he had been the lead singer since its inception, explaining the reasons behind his departure. Despite the eloquence and purity of the vision atop Solsbury Hill, there may be some ambivalence of being free or going solo: "And liberty she pirouette when I think that I am free." It was his debut single. The single was a Top 20 hit in the UK and reached the Top 70 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song uses a 7/4 time signature for the vast majority of the song. The last two measures of each chorus are in 4/4.
Little Solsbury Hill (more commonly known as Solsbury Hill) is a small flat-topped hill and the site of an Iron Age hill fort. It is located above the village of Batheaston in Somerset, England. The hill rises to 625 feet (191 m)above the River Avon which is just over 1 mile (2 km) to the south. It is within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It gives impressive views of the city of Bath and the surrounding area.
The hill was an Iron Age hill fort occupied between 300 BC and 100 BC, comprising a triangular area enclosed by a single univallate rampart, faced inside and out with well-built dry stone walls and infilled with rubble. The rampart was 20 feet (6 m) wide and the outer face was at least 12 feet (4 m) high. The top of the hill was cleared down to the bedrock, then substantial huts were built with wattle and daub on a timber-frame. After a period of occupation, some of the huts were burnt down, the rampart was overthrown, and the site was abandoned, never to be reoccupied. This event is probably part of the Belgic invasion of Britain in the early part of the 1st century BC.
The flattened top has several strip lynchet and field marker (mere) stones from the medieval period.
The hill is near the Fosse Way Roman Road as it descends Bannerdown hill into Batheaston on its way to Aquae Sulis.
Solsbury Hill is a possible location of the Battle of Mount Badon, fought between the Britons (under the legendary King Arthur) and the Saxons c. 496, mentioned by the chroniclers Gildas and Nennius.
There are three springs on the hill (Northwest, Northeast, and Southeast sides), and an old stream bed used to descend down the south side across what is now farm land.
Lyrics:
Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
I had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom, boom
"Son," he said, "Grab your things, I've come to take you home."
Eey bog quill
To keeping silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
'Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," he said, "grab your things, I've come to take you home."
Eey back home
When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes, but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," I said, "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home."

Gabriel has said of the song's meaning, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go."

Another superb video, VZ. For myself, I connected with this piece in a different way. I had been listening to Peter Gabriel for years, and I was listening to this as I was driving to Georgia to pick my son up from basic training at Fort Benning. I cried and cried my eyes out because he was leaving for the Middle East after his leave. Peter Gabriel always draws on different visions, and a lot of it is inner-born rather than simple to dissect. Wherever it comes from, I thank Great Creator. What an artist..............

Never a spontaneous moment of clarity in a landscape of delusional confusion, but sometimes a sudden sense of direction that is the result of a slow, persistent intention that has been impeded by the erroneous implications of expectations. I like this song a lot.

Honestly this song reminds me so much of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series, the line that sticks out to me the most is, "when illusions spin her net, I'm never where i want to be" that really seems to sum up Snakes entire existence never really being able to be free of the Patriots' Machinations until Mgs4

This song was written by. I.M. Heer, Jr., (Mrs.) the founder and inventor of dogs. Heer, Jr. had met Peter's Gabriel and they formed a company named Hey! Tu Shiprito Patre! out of their garage in Patterson, NJ. This song is about post-modernism in the age of empirical data, with mustard. It has been used for several projects, including the pillaging of Isidore Mugwumps Nissbaum. Thanky, thanky...
