Some moves were quite stressful on the fingers because there's a constant resistance caused by the weights. This simulates gravity and may not be obvious in the video. It was very hard to keep my forearm on the rest and watching the video back it's clear that I unintentionally cheated on some moves. I did consider some kind of strap that holds your arm in place but that felt a bit over the top.

I have cubing student that just started bouldering! This would be perfect for them! Thank you Tony Fisher for sharing another awesome puzzle.

This would be great as an interactive install piece in a museum or science/activity center, if I was a kid in a field trip I'd skip my lunch to play with this

So cool Tony! beautifully crafted and executed. I wonder whether this could be a playful way to rehab or maintain dexterity for someone with hand difficulties. Looks like fun!

Tony this is absolutely genius! There have been a few sorts of other attempts at finger bouldering or smaller scale climbing related puzzles but this is the first I’ve seen that’s both practical and fun! I’m hugely excited to see where you take this.

you could do a variation where you have to slide the holds through a maze of some sort

You could also limit yourself and make it harder by not allowing the use of certain fingers

if you used a gear friction mechanism you could use the full 360 of the device to cycle infinitely. You could even have the colors of the holds gradually change color so that you are gradually transferred to a different set of holds next rotation
@TonyFisherPuzzles
@TonyFisherPuzzles Ай бұрын
But then you couldn't "fall off" and be returned to the bottom like real climbing. You could take a rest by removing your hand and return later.

@@TonyFisherPuzzles ok to maintain that you could tie the weight to a long bike chain and wind it around the central pole so you pull up the weight as you travel around the cylinder

The holds and volumes look very clean! I was expecting them to be 3D printed but they looked so smooth I am guessing they are not. I am very curious to know how you made those!
@TonyFisherPuzzles
@TonyFisherPuzzles Ай бұрын
Thanks. I hand sculpted the shapes and then made moulds and cast the pieces in polyurethane resin. A lot of my puzzle making friends use 3D printing for everything but I prefer a more hands on approach.

That is incredible! what materials did you use for the wall/cilinder where the holds are srewed into? is it wood or just a hard cardboard? Sawing this made me wanna build something similar myself, how did you come up with such a clever desing!

Thanks. I used 5mm Foamex. It's fairly soft however and the t-nuts kept pushing out so I had to glue another layer over them. It was more time consuming than I imagined. I originally had the idea of a vertical design where a flat board with holds was pulled down on a pulley system. But that was replaced with this barrel design.

It seems like it should be rotated 90 degrees so you operate it with your hand at the top so your wrist is kept straight instead of angled up awkwardly all the time
@kinexkid
@kinexkid Ай бұрын
If you had a wide elastic band wrapped around the base, you could use that for some light pressure to help keep your hands down on their own
@TonyFisherPuzzles

Yes, I originally planned to have some kind of strap. But then it felt kind of weird to ask people to use it as if they couldn't be trusted. In reality though it's almost impossible to keep your arm in place.
@kinexkid
@kinexkid Ай бұрын
@TonyFisherPuzzles I figured it was difficult since you had to actively use your other hand to hold it down. The extension of the wrist in that direction looks like it's a bit uncomfortable and easy to slip out of 'proper' position.
@kinexkid
@kinexkid Ай бұрын
@TonyFisherPuzzles I'm sure you've worked on the design for a while and have probably tried this, but I think extending the distance between the bottom wrist brace area and the climbing wall could help to naturally flatten out the hand and make it a little bit less uncomfortable. And of course, it would still allow the ability to slide the whole arm forward into the current wrist position to get those particularly large gaps that require it
@TonyFisherPuzzles
@TonyFisherPuzzles Ай бұрын
I did initially have a bigger gap but instinctively I was continuing to push a hold when it was going underneath. I think maybe a solid bar (or two) that you slide your hand under would be the best option. It would have to be adjustable though since arm thickness varies so much.
