Solved! Exit: The House of Riddles - full walkthrough + solution with Dr Gareth and Laura

Join Laura and me as we solve Exit the Game: The House of Riddles, one of the many escape-room-at-home boxes in the Exit series. This was a fun box, great for those who are new to exit and the cards were not too insulting when you made mistakes. Final puzzle was a lot of fun, and... I also did not know that things are reversed in a glass of water. Amazing!

I agree - I think this has the clearest introduction to the basic concept of any of the games I've played, including trying to explain the appearance of the riddle cards within the game world in a way I don't think the other games generally do. (Or at least, they describe them as in-game objects, not as actual riddle cards per se). In a way, then, this box therefore coped better with my main criticism of Exit games, which is that if you pretend everything is real then it really brings you "out of it" to involve the box or other clearly non-game-world items - whereas if you make clear that the paraphernalia is part of the game, by acknowledging it ISN'T an ordinary everyday object, then it's in a sense a bit fairer. Or at least I think so, anyway - although I realize it's a somewhat nebulous point.

45:50 You were supposed to fold the other half the other way around, and shade in on that side, then shine a light through, but either way works. I think they wrote it like that to stick to the theme.

I wondered about that, but didn't do it because it doesn't make story sense to fold them back since they'd be then both upside down and facing the wrong way (since the page isn't printed on the back) - which in my opinion breaks the theme more than the way we solved it. That said, I'm sure you're right that that's what the printed solution says to do, so that's interesting and thanks for sharing that. Both methods are doing the exact same thing to get the same answer, anyway, just one is by drawing shadows and one by casting shadows.

As a Canadian, we regularly eat ice cream in winter. Yummy! 😉 I learned about water flipping the clock numbers from an episode of Jonathan Creek, way back when. Love that that little piece of odd knowledge actually came in handy. This was fun! There were a couple riddles I’m not sure I would have figured out, but you two figured them out quite quickly. Well done!
