What a helpful video! Was very easy to follow. Prior to this replacement, A 4k video took me 3:26 to export, only turbo boosted to 4 ghz for one second, and thermal throttled after two minutes to 1.7 ghz from 2.8 ghz base clock. After the replacement with thermal grizzly kryonaut, I exported the same video in 2:50 seconds (18% faster!), turbo boosted to 4ghz for 20 seconds, and remained at 3 ghz for the entirety of the export. 10/10 tutorial and thermal paste, would highly recommend this to anyone who owns an older MacBook pro.

Hey guys. I have a offer for a mbp 2015 brand new battery, always protection,no scratches whatsoever for a brilliant price. The thing is the owner is a graphic designer and photographer, so I think the MacBook was used under constant work imagining she worked like 8 hours full capacity on graphic programmes etc. Should I worry or be concerned? Thanks guys
@DigitalPulse5 жыл бұрын
I personally think it should not be a big concern especially since you said yourself that the MBP is in perfect condition. What I would definitely do if I were you would be to open it up and clean it thoroughly.
@flojotube4 жыл бұрын
Dario Prski - when I read his question, I felt he was asking about the actual BATTERY by saying “brand new battery” .... The confusion for me was how he then went on to say it was “always protection (protected), no scratches...” and he fears it was under a constant work load which means it’s NOT “brand new” but actually used. Either way, here’s MY QUESTIONS to you... (i also have the 2015 MBP 13” and i am looking to open it and upgrade whatever i can.) Your PASTE suggestion WILL BE IMPLEMENTED.. 1. Are battery replacements possible? 2. If his question WAS about a used battery only, isn’t there a way to TEST IT prior to purchase the same way one might use a multi-meter (or other devices) to test used standard batteries?? This would be a great video topic.. 3. I’m upgrading the SSD and have learned that the RAM is soldered in place by Apple. However, solder can be reversed, so are there RAM upgrades available for this MBP if we are willing to desolder/solder or pay a repair tech?? 4. Aside from SSD & RAM upgrades, are there ANY OTHER UPGRADES (regardless of difficulty level) that are possible for this 2015 MBP that will increase performance or longevity?? Another great video idea. 5. I noticed on a “tear down” video of this 2015 MBP that the Thunderbolt 2 controller was accessible/removable..... Can we remove it and UPGRADE to Thunderbolt 3 if we don’t mind the obvious negative exterior appearance side effects?? If so, would anything else need to be upgrading to accommodate this T3 to work properly? Finally - 6. Are you aware of any successful radical modifications such as adding a gigabit Ethernet connector or other ports OR MODULES that were not already there? I left a comment on the video complimenting you on this video. You truly did do a wonderful job. I have other channels with many subscribers and I still have NEVER thought to use the sweeping video effect you used when showing the MBP in the beginning... I don’t normally show items, as my content is geared more toward political topics, but it’s still an effect I LOVE that I should use when showing still photography or slow motion scenes... your video has encouraged me to experiment with this. Thanks!

Just did this for my 2014 Macbook Pro (15") and... it worked like a champ - GREAT TUTORIAL! FYI I also did a little trick that helps low-tech cowboys such as myself: I printed out a sheet showing the computer guts, and whenever I removed a screw... I taped it on the section of the printout where the screw went, and when the time came to put things back together, just grabbed each screw taped to the printout - WAY easier than trying to remember which screw went where. Thanks again sir & great job (keep 'em coming).

Just followed this and it worked like a charm. I stumbled upon your video while looking for videos on how to change my 2015 15" MBPro battery and decided to do a 2-for-1. Battery swap + apply new thermal paste. I can't believe how dried out the paste was, there was almost nothing left but crumbs. I used the Arctic MX-4 paste. I also could not believe how much dust was in there, i used compressed air to clean out all the dust in the fans. My laptop feels like a brand new machine, best money I ever spent. It's been running so much cooler. I haven't even heard the fan blaze 1 time so far since I applied it. Before, the fan would howl constantly for simple tasks like opening a PDF or TradingView. @DigitalPulse5 жыл бұрын
Depends. You saw the state of my thermal paste in the video. Cleaning just the dust would help a bit but only doing that without repasting would not yield any major results. Cleaning it is a common sense thing if you are taking it apart. If you are using it for 2+ years then you definitely have to clean it. Thanks for noticing!
@DigitalPulse5 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady Yes, but you saw the state in which my existing paste was in. Completely dry. That's not the condition in which thermal paste should be for a device that runs this hot.
@DigitalPulse5 жыл бұрын
Dried out, poorly applied thermal paste is a problem for heat transfer. If you look up the topic of thermal paste for MacBooks you will see a lot of articles indicating that for some unknown reason Apple does a poor job with the thermal paste and that the quality of the paste that they use is also questionable. I never said that cleaning up the dust didn't help but replacing the thermal paste helped just as well as cleaning. Take a look at the pinned post from another user and you will see that it actually helps. For me, other users reporting that this tutorial helped them reduce the temperature is enough evidence that this works. I am not doing a research study here. It's just a practical video to help people with their overheating MacBooks, so keep that in mind.

Did the whole process that I have shown in the video help me improve the performance? Yes it did. Did other people report similar or same results after following my tutorial? Yes they did. @Bobby Brady If you want a video comparing various thermal interface materials there's plenty out there that demonstrates that dry cracking stock dow corning crap that doesn't make proper die contact is reliably rubbish at transferring heat. That's not the point of this video.

Thanks for the tutorial, i had the same macbook pro 2015 15" and i did this. Ordered the same thermal paste and i'll rate it as easy DIY just follow the step by step. Please take note that after you plug back in the battery and turn back on the power your monitor will show you "Plug in charger" Icon (Even if you are running on 100% battery) the laptop is just indicating to plug back the power cable thats all. So do not panic if your laptop wont boot up in battery mode. Thank you hope this helps. Oh ya, since i had extra thermal paste i replaced the thermal on my 2017 Macbook air. Quite surprised that apple did not apply any thermal on the GPU! so glad i did an extra mile today.

In case it has not been mentioned before - a tech pro tip on thermal paste is to cover your finger with clear plastic wrap (saran wrap) and spread the thermal paste evenly on the chips before reinstalling the heatsink. Also, the dust in there definitely was a factor - the fans were covered. Compressed air all over that logic board (do it outside, trust me) will get it done quickly.
@DigitalPulse5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip John! With the ThermalGrizzly paste you also get a small spreader, but probably your method works effectively as well.
@JohnPamplin5 жыл бұрын
@@DigitalPulse I prefer the finger method because it gives you more tactile feel for a thin, even, smooth coat. Also, I always use compressed air to blow out the insides before starting to remove any parts (your fans were pretty clogged!) I recently did this procedure to my 15" Late 2013 Retina 2.6 i7, and while it didn't reduce peak temps that much, the fans were so much quieter - they didn't have to spool up to max speed. I should get that Intel Power Gadget - is that free?

I’m having this issue - when I took my MacBook Pro apart I too was expecting some dust - instead there was nothing, the thing looked brand new. Anywho changed all the thermal paste and put it back together and no difference at all. I really think there is either a temp bug in play or my system has a bad temp monitor because mine overheats until it crashes - and the fans don’t ever spin up first - yet it’s burning to the touch. Also I’ve literally installed hundreds of CPUs at this point and I’m well informed on how apply thermal paste, what is good, what isn’t, etc - and the factory job from Apple was fine - little too much but not that bad - and it still had some moisture to it - wasn’t dried up. So no issue with that. Made my heart drop when I saw that since I pretty much figured out there that the issue wasn’t as easy as thermal paste or dust.
@DigitalPulse5 жыл бұрын
Damn Rod. Sorry to hear that man 😥 Wait, so you said it overheats without the fans even kicking in to cool it down... Did you try to manually control the fans and crank them up to the max from the start just to see if it's going to crash?
@rodmunch695 жыл бұрын
Dario Prski yeah - and for the most part it doesn’t crash if the fans are cranked. The temp monitor shows the temps hitting nearly 100c as well - so the system knows it’s running hot - the temp readings are available to the system. I can’t figure it out. I’ve done all the resets for hardware, I’ve reloaded the machine, etc - none made any difference.

Thanks for spreading the word on this subject. I've done this _upgrade_ on a few Mac's now. One MBP, had no more than 60% paste coverage on the CPU. One could argue that 60% coverage in the middle should get you by, but this was 60% to one side. Conversely, I did upgraded to X5690's on a Mac Pro 5,1, and was pleasantly surprised by the paste coverage and how much moisture was left, in a 13 year old system. I guess that could be the a contrast between cooling of a laptop versus a tower, but they could at least give some effort to applying paste squarely.

DUDE! This video was the greatest and the most helpful thing tonight! I've been using my mid 2015 mbp for 4 years now and today I realized that my batteries have started to swell badly. I've also been having major heat issues and thought that it's just normal... smh Trackpad is a bit out of place, not too bad yet and the bottom is swollen as well. Tomorrow I'm gonna purchase the stuff needed and fix this asap and also apply new thermal paste. Seriously, thank you for the really well made instructions and pictures!

And the thermel paste aren´t dry after 2 years of use! they are dry at the day you get the device! So i replaced my one after a week i get the device. Sadly I need to agree, thermal paste in most cases is dry when device is delivered, or at least semi-dry. I can 'dry-out' Arctic Silver 5 in 12 months typical use (not one from '99 but current one, which means current product is much worse). I assume that even thermal grizzly Kyronaut should be replaced after 18 months use. Not to mentioning the cleaning of the fans and internals.

IDK man I am clueless myself. I work in a clean office environment 5 days a week where the laptop is always on my desk. I assume it's because I used it every single day for couple of hours in bed to skype. Hi, good luck with your channel Some feedback : mention the type of screwdriver for each screw so viewer knows what they need and when. Extra lighting and maybe a closer look at the positions of each screw, maybe using a macro lens. Maybe I missed it but you missed the paste on the GPU. The benchmark part of the video would of been better if we could see the numbers and the labels of each graph. Maybe using a screen recorder might help. But very helpful video. Ill be using it to replace the paste on my MBP soon. 👍

great video, however I must say I am not sure if the trick was the thermal paste or the incredible amount of dust you had inside...it was scary man! also, not to be too critic, but even with the thermal paste, temps reach 90 Celsius which of course should not happen if Apple had a more realistic fan curve. and in all I think your test is too limited, a 2-6 minute render time clip is not long enough to really test thermal. my bet is that if you let a longer clip render, even with the new paste, CPU speeds will hover around 2Ghz or lower, which of course is non acceptable.
@DigitalPulse6 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for the feedback. I completely follow what you are saying. I agree, the dust had a big impact on the performance but when you look at the old thermal paste and it's state, I think the re-application of the paste also contributed. In general, MacBooks are quite famous for having a poorly applied thermal paste. Regarding the video export, you are right there as well. I did notice it whenever I had to export a larger clip, it would indeed decrease the performance. But I am planning to do a follow up on this video. A comment below you can see @Chinchy recommending me to undervolt the MacBook and then try, so that's something I am planning to do for the next video. Thanks for taking time to watch the video! Your feedback is much appreciated 😃👍Have a nice day!

Ahh good ol' dust, before you remove any bolts, if it is that dusty, vacuum it and after you get rid of the dust, then proceed to unscrew the heatsink, you don't want to have dust particles in between the thermal paste and the core.

I have a Mid-2014 15" Retina (a1398) 2.8 GHz Quad -Core i7, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 7550M 2 GB, 1TB SSD. Just bought used, person before had the battery swell so it was replaced, now has some service battery light and runs hot, maxed out RPM fans, keyboard area/the strip above keyboard is the hottest part, which makes me think its the SSD or possibly CPU I heard? I've heard other people replace the thermal paste, but most comments say issue still persists. Heard others with similar models have logic boards replaced and didn't fix either. Lastly, many suggestions such as resetting the PRAM & SMC. Is this a common issue with the 15" MBP? do they naturally just run hot with a terminal velocity fan?? It's so annoying cause my MBP Mid 2012 13" 8GM RAM and 1 TB SSSD was quiet as a mouse with zero problems and this is blowing like a jet plane with just simple web browsing! not even using it for Adobe/Music Production like I intended! are they just too thin for their own good? So far, i took it to one shop and they ran some diagnostics and said it was within normal operating range, however, I don't think it should get this hot- literally its too hot to put on my lap and even hot to type on. Is this model just a lemon and should be avoided or what? thank you.

I agree that Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut offers the best thermal performance of any non-conductive paste but the huge caveat is that it is only guaranteed to not break down when used at temperatures of 80°C or less. As you likely know, Apple's MacBook Pro 15" often hits 99°C when editing or exporting video or when running CPU intensive applications. As such, it would seem more prudent to use a past like the Noctua NT-H2 which does not break down at 80°C. With that said, your video was made 1 year ago, so I am curious as to whether your thermals have slowly increased over time, or if your MBP is still running as cool as the day you repasted. My intent is in knowing how fast Kryonaut degrades in MBP's which run much hotter than 80°C. Thanks.
