To me. Billy created the Turbo Rangers. Like a Zeo 2.0 cause Tommy in Dimensions in Danger briefly morphs into Zeo Red before going to Dino Thunder Black using a master morpher.

@@christopherbarker1048 I think it’s been widely accepted that Billy created the powers. When the others suspected him of being the Gold Ranger, he always claimed to be working on a special, secret project. That project was most likely the Turbo Powers. Unfortunately after David Yost’s abrupt departure, there were rewrites, which hastily resulted in the Rangers just creating the powers themselves with little to no explanation.

@@christopherbarker1048 I believe Billy was able to finish creating the Turbo powers before Zeo ended. Turbo powers were definitely a backup plan or plan B for when the Zeo powers started to become unstable and dangerous to continue using but maybe I'm wrong.

It makes you wonder how long he would have stayed on the show had the crew not been assholes towards him. He clearly loved the character and the show itself. In fact, now that I think about it, would we have gotten Justin in Billy was around? If Rocky was hurt and they needed a new Blue Ranger, there would have been a seasoned veteran of a Blue Ranger right there.

@@ssm85ytp I'm not sure what Beetleborgs had to do with it, but I know when ratings start dropping on a kids show the executives immediately think the kid viewers don't connect with the older characters, so a kid has to be added ASAP. This is, of course, ludicrous. I remember growing up I tended to find the younger character in an action cartoon annoying because they rarely were allowed to do anything.

I've got a head canon that could work and make a bit more sense. AND IT'S NOT THE WATER'S FAULT....mostly. Here's what we know: The Zeo Crystal is a perpetual energy generator that grows in power the more its used. As with other Ranger powers, it has energy enough to channel power to its user to allowed for instantaneous morphs as we see in the episode "Invasion of the Ranger Snatchers." It can be assumed that the Zeo Crystal's power increases on a linear progression over the course of the show with the occasional bump due to new equipment being unlocked (Zeo Battle Cannon, Super Zeo Zords, etc.). The progression stays until the final episode of Zeo. In the Rangers' final battle against Mondo, the Machine King grows to the Macro Scale and leaves the team in a spot. Trey, now as Gold Ranger again, taps into the power of the Zeo Crystal and aids the Rangers in growing to that same scale. The Rangers win but now we have an issue. The energy needed to make one grow at the most basic subatomic level is astounding! Now take a team that's approximately 5'6" to 6' tall and make them all about 300ft tall. The sheer power needed for that would be exponentially massive! And all of that power is in the Zeo Subcrystals sitting in the Rangers' Zeonizers. Now we have a problem. When a power source a system meant to generate power has too much to give but is limited in how it passes the power out, it becomes unstable. We see it with Kat's morph in the Turbo movie. Last we see Kat morph in the series, again "Invasion of the Ranger Snatchers," Kat locks in her Zeonizer and in an instant she's Zeo Ranger 1! Now, the Zeonizer locks in and it takes forever for the suit to generate. It's slow, it sounds dangerous, and due to the instability, another kinetic impact from hitting water destabilizes the suit and cancels the morph. It's a concern for Zordon even when he comments even the Zords wouldn't be enough to handle Maligore. What if they aren't enough because the Zords couldn't handle the excess power from the recent energy jump. The Zeo Powers are dangerous at this time. So what can the team do? First, they would put down the Zeonizers for now. But not before taking some of the energy of the Zeo Crystal in a controlled burst to create the Turbo Zords, Turbo Morphers, and weapons. This would cover why the color schemes are the exact same as they were with Zeo. Once the powers were created, the Rangers could take back their Zeonizers and have them in a time when they are safe to use again. This would explain things like why Adam didn't use the Zeo Ranger 4 powers during "In Space" when that happens. I know, long-winded fan theory with a lot of hoops to jump through but it gives some idea that could make sense while opening the door to both the Zeo and Turbo powers coming back.

My headcannon has always been that the Zeo crystal was used in the Turbo system, as evidenced by the similar morphing technique, the crystal shards being stored in the Key, and the increased power output of the Zeo Crystals required newer, more robust hardware to handle and distribute the power load effectively. another bit of evidence is the Phantom Ranger's crustal, it being a great power source in it's own right This would mean that the Turbo powers are just a hardware upgrade to the Zeo Powers, with the Zeo Crystal being lost when the Turbo megazords and the command center were destroyed, the only reason they were not recovered was because of the Alliance of Evil's summons causing a rapid withdrawal. I personally believe then the crystals, megazords, and command center were recovered and used in the development of the Lightspeed Rescue Rangers, the megazords providing an engineering basis for the new zords, the command center providing data on the Morphing Grid, and the Zeo Crystals providing the power. As far as my head cannon goes, it is still used and held by Lightspeed Rescue. (But now shared with the veteran Zeo and Turbo rangers)

My headcanon was that the powers had continued to grow and thus became unstable and if nothing was done, it would've killed them so the Turbo powers were used to drain their portion of the crystal and while those powers were weaker they were far more stable. Another one came from a fanfic I saw about how the crystals were addicting. They just gave power to the rangers when asked. No wise spirit to temper it and they became afraid that if they didn't give up the powers they would do something they would regret so when Zordon gave them the Turbo powers they accepted without question.

As someone who watched Zeo I'm pretty sure when they adopted the Zeo powers they said that the Zeo powers would continue to increase in power and eventually become unstable and force them to stop using them. I think that was supposed to be a plot point in the Turbo movie.

Interesting. My theory is this: When Divatox arrived on Earth looking for Lerigot, her ship infected the water in both Angel Grove as well as where Lerigot landed and it allowed it to short circuit the zeo crystals from the morphing grid. As far as the Turbo powers, they combined the residual energy left from the Zeo crystals and power coins to complete Billie’s experiments on Turbo technology that he started before he left and linked it to Eltar. This created new powers.

İn the final episode of Power Rangers in space, red ranger destroyed the Zordon and a huge surge of energy emanated from it, destroying the old enemies in that energy wave, thus reclaiming their old Ranger powers. Example: •tommy got his master morpher in ninja steel dimensions in danger episode. •(mighty morphing red ranger) jason was also in forever red episode and he used his morpher. •(blue space ranger and red turbo ranger) Tj was red ranger again in forever red. What if the water shorted the zeonizer/morpher an sent a feedback loop of the zeo powers back into the zeo crystals. Such a thing might damage the crystals making using them dangerous, as even a crack might lead to a full blown failure of the crystals an release all of their power at once.

@@wou5.09 but the crash was very rough and explosions have been known to demorph rangers im not saying the water wasnt the final nail in the coffin on it but the rangers have interacted with water before, monsters have used it as a weapon before and they didnt demorph. it would take the impact of a crash like Kat hitting the water from high up, that fall would of killed hurt or more seriously hurt her had she not attempted to morph. my theory does work with yours and strengthens it as it would take an incredible amount of force to demorph a ranger Kat hitting the water was the force needed to stop mid way through and pyramidas crashing onto aquatar served as that force for the gold ranger it takes an incredible amount of force to de-power a ranger at least back in the day now im not sure if it would take alot seems like the rangers demorph alot more now than in the early days. anyway my point is that water alone isnt enough to force a demorph it takes a good amount of force

For Kat's morph, the Suits were designed to protect the rangers. When ever a ranger has taken a massive blow that the suit can't absorb they lose that power. Eric from The Time Force Rangers is a great example.

My head canon is when she hit the water she wasn’t fully morphed and her hurting her leg on impact interrupted her morph separating the connection between the two zeonizers before it finished, which cut off the morph. Then the movie just implies the turbo powers are stronger, which could have been true until the zeo powers aged more beyond the turbo series. We know that the red zeo powers were never destroyed due to Dino thunder and forever red. Taking the comics as canon as well the zeo powers are the most powerful in Tommy’s arsenal, but with his damaged master morpher he could only access them for a very short amount of time and only once. We also don’t know what happened to the zeo crystals after the command center was destroyed again so maybe they just couldn’t be recovered from the wreckage in time for space.

According to lore and logic the powers are still out there somewhere in the old command chamber. No one said the powers became the turbo powers or that they were destroyed. Besides its clear the writers didn't care. The rangers got the turbo powers. But what happened to the Zeo powers? Shrug, lets go

my theory: breaking the reassembling and then siphoning power from the zeo crystal caused the crystal to begin to break down and destabilize causing the stored energy to dissipate when immersed in water s liquid that conducts electricity the powers were drawn into the water causing the suits to disperse, Billy kept disappearing to siphon the crystal in an attempt to store enough energy to create a new set of powers and zords as the zeo zords would no longer function without the crystal.

The wierdest thing about this is that the Zeo Rangers do fight a water themed villain, Leaky Faucet, I believe his name was. And not only that, but there were some underwater scenes with the Super Zeomegazord its debut, Adam's zord has a fight underwater.

@@jay1hi547 My theory is that the Zeo Crystal was never supposed to be harnessed by humans and that the Zeo Powers were in fact killing the rangers as the powers grew stronger over time (Like how the Gold Ranger powers were hurting Jason)... The Zeo Crystal was in the Caves of Deception located beneath the Moon Palace of Lord Zedd and Rita. Knowing that Master Vile had plans for the crystal, Zordon asks the Rangers to acquire and destroy it. Tommy split the crystal into five pieces and was transported separately through time and space by Zordon. The only reason they had to use the Zeo Powers was Master Vile summoned the Orb of Doom, which he used along with his powers to turn back time on Earth, turning the Power Rangers into kids and rendering them powerless. Zordon determined that the only object capable of restoring the Earth and the rangers' powers was the Zeo Crystal

@@2011kmd I fully support that theory! It was said that it would keep getting stronger and stronger over time, so theoretically it would eventually become too much for a human to handle. That's why Adam didn't use it when he showed up on In Space. I do like to believe that later Billy found a way to put a cap on the Zeo powers so that they could use them without any problems, explaining why Tommy had his in Forever Red and everybody had theirs in Super Mega Force

Its a better theory to just say that Zordon wanted to give the rangers new powers that could be transferred to others in a grand plan to make more ranger teams in a war against evil. From what we know, Ninjor is only able to make and manipulate the Power Coins. Considering that Tommy still had his Zeo Morpher in Forever Red, and not the Power Coin based Master Morpher with a Zeo Coin, that's not the case. However, that could be why he has a Master Morpher with 4 different power coins now. Man if only we had a 20th anniversary season that could have explained all these things, and it wasn't like Ninjaman was in Gokaiger so he could have a role in the Mega Force adaptation. Oh...Wait a minute... To be honest we just got to accept that a majority of the writers, with the exception of Judd Lynn, didn't care a lot about continuity until maybe after Megaforce bombed and were getting lit on fire by fans.

In “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie” Zordon tells the Rangers they need the new Zords and morphers because the crystals in the Turbo keys, like Larago’s wand will get them through the barrier that surrounds the island. In case anyone has forgotten Adam used his broken COPY of Zack’s original morpher because his replacement Carlos was now the Black Ranger and Carlos was helping him with his confidence. ​@@DUB_87 Popular misconception; The Rangers all still had their Dino Coins, they got damaged by the Thunderzord destruction feedback loop, but otherwise still existed (S3 Ninja Quest). No reason to think otherwise. As widely known, Adam even uses his (damaged, but not disintegrated into dust) Dino Coin to attempt a morph in In Space (In Space's "Always a Chance"). The Power Coins that got crushed by Goldar/Rito (Alien Ranger's "Climb Every Fountain") were the second set of power coins, the Ninja Coins; Ape, Wolf, Crane, Falcon, Bear and Frog. These coins' powers were initiated when a Ranger calls out their Ranger Colour ("Red Ranger Power!" "Blue Ranger Power!" etc). The original (and the +1 unoriginal) Dino Coins: Tyrannosaurus, Sabre-Tooth Tiger, Mastodon, Triceratops, Pterodactyl, White Tiger, and Dragonzord were not destroyed (weird that only 3 out of 7 creatures tied to the Dino Coins are actually dinosaurs, but hey lol). Dragon didn't even get damaged and presumably was still sitting safely in the past at that point (as decided at the end of S2's "Return of the Green Ranger"). This is why it's specifically the Mastodon Coin Adam morphs with in his In Space episode (you know because that's what Adam calls out when he morphs, the S1&S2 "Mastodon", not the S3 "Black Ranger Power"), rather than the Frog Coin. I guess they just didn't see the mostly now power-less Dino Coins as much of a threat and worth bothering about anymore (though considering what happened when they neglected to claim the Dragon Coin in "Return of an Old Friend" in season 1, you'd think they'd have known better than that on the second go-around that even power-less Coins are still a threat - how soon villains forget lol).

I saw this movie the weekend it came out in theaters. When Kat tried to morph into water and it failed, my cousins and I giggled "well, that didn't work!" and we never thought about it again. It never occurred to me that there was no solid explanation as to why the Zeo powers were no more until I saw this video!

I always figured that The Zeo morph was disrupted because of being injured while she was still morphing, and the sequence was broken. Interesting to hear these alternate perspectives on the process. Still, I think the Zeo powers were still stronger than the Turbo powers as well. It was never a great transition, and could of been done better. Still, it kept the series going and they let some of the other rangers go free to continue their own way.

The Turbo powers were an “upgraded” version of the Zeo powers. They have the same colors and everything. Simple as that.

I actually had theory that lines up with that. It was said early on in Zeo that their powers would continue to grow because the Zeo Crystal has perpetually infinite power, meaning it power will increase forever. My theory is that the power of the Zeo Crystal became too great for their Zeo forms so they needed to upgrade to better harness the power of the Zeo Crystal. This also could explain why Kat couldn't full morph during the fall into the river and why she I'm unmorphed apon impact. This is just a theory though.

I'm definitely on board with the whole "Billy developed the Turbo powers and is the Phantom Ranger" theory, mostly because he seemed the most down about the fact that they only had 5 subcrystals and 5 rangers at the beginning of Zeo, so I feel like he developed 6 powers to make sure that the problem didn't end up happening again, and that he just brought the Phantom Ranger powers with him to Aquitar in case of an emergency so that the core powers were still there and usable, otherwise if he had remained on Earth, it would've been likely that he would've become the Blue Turbo Ranger over Justin. Another reason I believe this is because the Phantom Ranger appeared after "Passing the Torch" therefore he didn't know a single person on the team, and rather than exposing who he was, he preferred to keep himself hidden since his identity would have no meaning to TJ or the rest of the second-gen Turbo rangers. It's the best I can come up with for the development of the Turbo powers and who the Phantom Ranger is, all wrapped in a little package. I have to agree with Jason's answer. It could be a combination of the morpher being activated, plus the impact of the water could have caused the morpher to overload the Zeo Crystal, which destroyed it (kind of like overloading a battery through electrical surges, as indicated through the sparks that can be seen in the water when Katherine was submerged). That's just my input, though.

As I recall, there was a fight scene involving one of the Super Zeo Zords battling a monster under water in the Zeo series, so I think the Zeo powers might have some resistance or, at least tolerance, for water.

The Zeo Crystal is an extremely powerful object which produces enormous amounts of energy, becoming stronger with the passage of time. In time Power Rangers were not able to handle that amount of energy (something similar happened with Jason and his Gold Ranger Powers). That’s why they had to either stop using the Zeo Crystals or convert their power into Turbo. As far as I remember the Rangers couldn’t morph during the Turbo movie events either because it was damaging for them or the Zeonizers did not work properly because of the energy transfer to the Turbo powers. The Zeo powers were still intact. It also explains why Tommy was able to morph during Forever Red.

Nice job getting the actors to say what they remember. It seems pretty clear that Tommy's Zeo powers weren't destroyed, as he utilised them in Forever Red. I always just thought that the Turbo powers were an upgraded version of the Zeo powers. However, it could just be more that the mechanism which works the Zeonisers, moreso than the Zeo crystals themselves, is what malfunctions in water. It's a pretty major design flaw by Billy, Alpha and Zordon to be honest hahaha.

my theory is that the rangers were starting to suffer the same effects that jason dealt with using the gold powers but because the gold powers were stronger it was a much faster process vs the rangers who likely held those powers for closer to a year before they were being effect and that comes from the fact that the zeo powers grow stronger over time. so if the powers were becoming to much for the human body to manage they had to switch to a different power source, and by the time tommy used the zeo powers again in wild force the effects were no longer a risk because billy likely figure out how to make the powers safer to use or he didnt care about the risks due to needing to use them. and when ninjor creates the Zeo power coin for the master morpher i would assume that the powers were stabilized even more due to having a much safer morphing method since the coins seemed more stable than the zeo powers since even a damaged morpher and coin still briefly allowed Adam to morph but Kat's morph was shorted out by water. just a theory but i dont think we will ever get the real answer

But the Zeo powers weren't destroyed though, because we know Tommy still has access to his Zeo form in Forever Red and with the Master Morpher. And we know Rocky still has his base from Dimensions in Danger. I kind of think that literally they just needed a quick upgrade for Turbo. The Zeo Powers might constantly grow in strength, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be consistently fast enough to get the jump they needed. Kat not morphing fast enough is kind of symbolic from that standpoint. So they literally needed to "shift into Turbo", lol
