The cool thing about Yosegi is that they use different types of wood for the marquetry. They are not painted. It is the natural color of the wood that makes the patterns. Looking at the top of your box there are at least six different colors, which means six different trees were used to create it. If you look at it very carefully you can see different wood grains in each color. It's hand made and the secret boxes have been made since 1900, although the Yosegi marquetry comes from the 17th century. The other interesting part of Yosegi is how it's made. They saw of small sticks of wood and glue those together to create a pattern inside, seen from the top or the bottom. Then they shave of thin layers of the end to use as veneer.

Finally a puzzle i can solve as well :-). My wife was watching from the table and she immediately said that this is a lovely little box, and i agree. I have never seen a puzzle box which differs in moves between opening and closing. Usually margins are very tight, must have something to do with perhaps a small design flaw. No rotations causing this, that's for sure :-). Nice and smooth solve, no presure :-). I checked out the new puzzles at Cubicdissection today and already most of them are sold out and that at such prices... There are some serious collectors out there. Thanks and regards.

Your wife has a great taste. Say hi to her from me :) Definitely no rotations were made during solving. There are 2-3 puzzle boxes I've solved that I want to break to see how they work, but I'm not a popular KZbinr I can't afford to do that. 😁 Cubicdissection is very popular. Wanted to by puzzles couple of times but was just 5 minutes late each time. Also shipping price and taxes are not exciting.

Nothing is “wrong” with the mechanics. It’s a safe. Why does it take you a simple spin of the handle to close your safe but to open it you need a combination? That’s ingenious if it is to be used for cosmetics or jewelry - which is what it’s intended for. It’s supposed to be a locked safe box, not a toy.

Maybe your puzzle is suffering from a bit of humidity. A sachet of a silica gel might help to fix it.
