Same, moving to digital bills and paper on as many accounts as possible has helped me a ton. And they are often available online for a long time if you do need to refer back. There are obvious things that may not apply here but it’s helped me cut back on the mail I get and managing paper clutter long term

As a retired letter carrier, I would recommend shredding anything that even has your name and address on it, with identity theft, it helps to protect yourself and your Dad. I also take care of my paper clutter as it comes in. I go straight to my shredder and shred, file, or take action. I also have just about anything that can be online there. At the end of the year, I go through any papers filed and shred if they are no longer needed. ❤ love your videos! Happy New Year!

Carla, I cannot tell you how amazing it is for you to address this paper thing! I honestly thought it was just me! I hate opening mail, it freaks me out? I don’t understand why? I also used to have bags and bags of sensitive mail, just shoved in my shed? 🙄 I’m a lot better, I have a little incinerator now and burn it all, which I kind of enjoy? So I’ve gone from a paper hoarder to a potential arsonist! 😂😂🔥 A very Happy New year to you and the legend that is Samson. 🖤🐾🖐🏻🇬🇧🥂

We moved from a large house that had many desks and places where paper lived. I realized how much we had when we retired to a smaller house. I put everything in a huge Rubbermaid tote and every evening I would open it and fill a little basket and sit and sort it. Now ALL paper items are in one desk and we keep it that way. None in the kitchen, bedroom etc. When my MIL died there was so much to go through, my kids will not have to deal with that.

One addition to these tips: if you find an online PDF manual for something you own, download it right then! Save it to you Google Drive or cloud drive of choice. So many support sites drop support on older electronics and it's an annoyance to hunt down later. Just save it and have it to easily search in the future.

Happy soon to be new years 🎉Everything in Denmark is pretty much digital now, so we keep practically nothing in paper form anymore. All mail from the government comes in an app, all mail from healthcare, insurance, education, bills and so on goes into the app. We even have online access to all medical info, so we can see all test results taken, doctors notes etc. I have never had a checkbook or anything like that either and after new years you can’t get paper stamps in Denmark and they are skipping the 1000 kroner bill nationwide. I only store our marriage license and birth certificates 😅

I've gotten things down to pretty simple. When mail comes into the house, or bills need to be paid outside of being debited from my bank account, I attend to these things right away. If I have to wait for a certain time for a 'To Do', it will stay within my sight so it's always in mind. Otherwise, I just have a file box for the more important papers and will regularly go through that box to declutter it. I used to procrastinate horribly, but the desire to be free of this 'business' is greater now than wanting to wait by procrastinating....thank goodness!

I deal with paper and mail as it comes in, I either scan it, shred it or trash it, if it requires attention or a to do, I do it right then and there and move on. I also went paperless everywhere, I write zero checks now, all auto pay, mail nothing, I unsubscribed to all junk mail and credit card offers and I also use the paper karma app to unsubscribe to individual things as they come in, all these things have greatly reduced all mail, I get very little, maybe a piece a day or sometimes nothing at all. Happy new year Carla and Samson 💕. As soon as my mail comes through my letterbox I deal with straight away. Shred, recycle or action. I learnt this after keeping boxes of ‘archive’ paperwork I didn’t need. Now I hardly keep anything but the basics. I go paperless where I can. But yeah, as soon as I receive mail I shred, recycle or action ASAP.

I wish I could say I’m a take care of it when it comes in person, bit alas, I’m not. After a long day at work taking care of paperwork, both physical and digital, I do the “pile” thing and “tomorrow” I’ll go through it because I’m exhausted. My hope it to change that mentality and try to give my self 10-15 minute to deal with stuff on the daily. My dad was great at it and not a procrastinator at all, but that was not one thing passed down to me!! 😂 Happy New Year!

Love the Sampson calendar! I try to not even bring any mail into the house if it's junk mail or I just don't need it (like, I don't know, if it's a utility bill that for some reason I still get in paper but I have it auto-paid every month). I literally stand at the mailbox and toss the junk into our paper recycling bin, I open any stuff we DO need to see or pay, toss the envelopes and any extra paper that is there, and take only the bill itself or the statement itself into the house. Then I have a file folder that is labeled "TO PAY" and any bills, I toss into that file, which I go through once a month. Most other stuff like bank statements, I have signed up for paperless so those come via email.

Happy new year! I am struggling with paper clutter. I'm 52 and was raised to save the paper trail 😂 I have years of bank statement, paid bills, health documents, the actual important stuff, etc etc. It had filled two filing cabinets and a few boxes to the brim. Hi. I just watched this paper clutter video and since you asked for how we deal with paper I thought I would share my process since I just dealt with my pile today. Here goes: 1. As mail comes in I try to throw away junk mail right away. 2. If I get something that needs to be filed or an action taken I put it in a drawer next to where I have my recliner (including receipts I want to keep). 3. If the action is needed within the next few weeks I make a note on my PC calendar to remind me to deal with it. 4. At the end of the month I use an app called "Genius Scan" and I scan the documents that are in the drawer. 5. I then send the file of scans to my PC via email. 6. I use "PDFsam Basic" to break up the scan into individual pages (a 1 step process) 7. I then rename each file to represent what it is (ex: 1223 Home Tax). If a document has multiple pages I use PDFsam Basic again to merge the pages so it becomes one document (a 1 step process). 8. I then file the documents in folders on my PC and I do a monthly backup of my PC. ..... I have eliminated all paper in my house, everything is digital. The title to the car, or things like that are in a Safety Deposit Box in the bank. This process once a month takes maybe 2 hours but to me it is worth it to not have paper. I do as you mentioned, most (if not all) manuals are online so I go there if I need one. I have been using this method for probably 5 years. The two products I use (Genius Scan and PDFsam Basic) are free. It may seem like a lot of steps but it goes fast after you do it a few times. P.S. I also digitized all my photos with a photo/negative/slide scanner. *** By the way I absolutely love your videos!! I am always waiting for your next! Happy New Year

Junk mail gets tossed or shredded right away. Anything I keep gets put on top of my filing cabinet to file - and I don’t let it sit for longer than two weeks. Anything that requires action I set on my laptop so I don’t forget to take care of it. A couple years ago I did a huge declutter and reorganization of my file cabinet. I still struggle to figure out what can go and what is important to hold onto.

I’m terrible at dealing with paper. Most mail is sorted immediately, but coupons and anything that requires “action” sits on my counter in a pile until one day I get fed up with it and finally deal with it. For things to be filed away, they sit in trays on a desk in my office until one day I finally deal with it. I need to get better about that.

Carla, perhaps you can sub-divide the 'Action' pile into 'do it from home' (phone, email, online bills, online applications...) and then you can do some or all in your 'admin hour'. The other pile would be 'take with me/errand' for the ones you have to leave your home to do. I think that would give you more clarity as to what needs to be done how, when and where and it might reduce any overwhelm you might feel.
@mayshu893 Жыл бұрын
I was taught to stand (instead of sitting) while going through piles of paper… it helps to get through piles faster - I’m not as inclined to ‘linger’ on every single piece of paper. (I will sit when the paper is stuff that needs action… like filing important papers or paying bills or needing to follow-up with an email or phone call). Thank you for your channel - I’ve enjoyed having someone ‘with me’ as I declutter & pack for my move.

Happy New Year! I invested in a large paper shredder that I keep by the front door so that it is easier to destroy all unneeded or unwanted mail, flyers, paper immediately and efficiently. Anything that is left meets an organization rack that is divided with labeled folders to file, take action or important for a later time. Then we have 2 file accordions for long (health records, marriage and education certificates) and short (taxes, mortgage, banking)term records. It has been 3 years since implementation and it seems to be working well and occasionally needs some adjustments but that’s life as a human 😊

Happy New Year to you and Samson! Paper is one of my biggest issues with clutter. I have papers to file and to go through, yet again! I have started a little bit different method that should help. I have a short term "keep file" that I do not sort by categories. It is for papers that will be needed within the year. And can be tossed after they are done with their purpose, or filed if need be. I do need a specific file for take action, so I may check out Target, as I haven't found a file for take action that seems like it would be simple, not to ugly to have around and yet very functional. I have tossed more and more as time goes along, to try to decrease this paper clutter. It is true that there is sooooo much paper coming in all the time. Thanks for a helpful video!

We don’t have many books. I do need to organize it again as I see some things we’re not using. I think it’s really like all other areas once you create a system that works for you it’s training your mind to stick to it…and we have you to remind us. I hung it by the front (formal) door. The first slot is here medical file folder the nurses and other medical visitors make notes in. She fell and broke her hip in September. She is much better now The second I put her bills in and the third I keep mail for a friend that travels alot, so when he comes to visit it is all there. I also have a little basket with stamps/envelops/return address labels. So if Mom wants to send a letter she had the material. She is a Butterfly. The basket is on a wire shelf, that is four inches wide fits perfectly behind the front door. My stuff is a mess, so thanks for inspiration and I love that you are helping your sister! I did a huge house declutter in the end of 2019, and since then i have only had 3 thin folders on a shelf labelled bills, documents (insurance, rent) and receipts/manuals (which is mainly receipts for big things). This has helped me massively as i have homes for them and keep decluttering the paperwork every several months/annually (and do paperless bills online for majority). A have one seperate bigger organiser for the bulky documents (car maintenance) and misc. When I get a letter posted, i open it then and there, as doing a task that takes less than 5 mins saves me doing it in a bulk session for time well spent elsewhere. Otherwise i really recommend this system for those who can use this. 😀

I finally went through paperwork some stuff was from 4 years ago. It's all done now and I can't understand why I didn't do it, there was paperwork relating to my divorce and it through up some sad and angry emotions, it took me about 5 hours over a couple of days. From now on I'm going to dedicate sometime every week to sorting paperwork, this may change to once every other week or once a month, I'll see how much liked up. I good at taking action but not good at filing or throwing out. New yrear, new me!

You always have the best music! I am catching up on your december videos. Having a plan is the way to get things done. Make a promise to do 15 minutes a day in the morning before the day gets busy and you get tired. The hard part is gettign started right? Once you start you just keep going. As they say- JUST DO IT! Great ideas.I like your action trays. It's got sides so stuff won't fall out.

Oh gosh the catalogues were crazy before the holidays, but now I find I'm dealing with more electronic clutter mail. I don't know what kind of mailing list I got put on. And is it just me that would buy that Samson calendar? He's such a cutie!

An old-school method is to have a "bring forward " file. It's one of those accordion files that's numbered 1 to 31. Open your mail right away, and if action is required, just decide when, file it for that date. Eg. If something has to be done on the 11th of the month, file it in the 11. (And you can put it on your phone). Then you just check the folder once a day. Usually, it's only one or two things to do rather than a whole week's worth, so it's quick to do. Since you are looking in it every day, it becomes a regular habit. I know it's a pain, but as others have said, create a habit to open the mail every day. With the BF method, it works best that way, you give things a time for action and nothing piles up. Once the habit of opening the mail as soon as you get in the door with it, and you have a system to deal with it, it'll make it much easier to handle.

I use a similar system for receipts but using envelopes for each month instead of plastic bags. At the end of the tax year I go through and get rid of anything irrelevant and just keep the claimable stuff in one envelope for that year. Then I reuse the monthly envelopes. I have massively reduced years' worth of paper by mostly going online and saving scanned copies in my cloud back up. It's very satisfying to be paper free!

Hello Mister Samson, always a better video when you’re in it 💜 and I know you know and agree.. I am quite ok with my paperstuff, but when it wants me to make calls I am absurdly paralyzed. Am working on that, but MAN that makes things complicated 😣

Yes, how do you handle procrastination? I have an accordion file where I keep "take action" items - to be mailed, mail supplies, calendar time will tell, and at this point I am able to keep receipts for next year's taxes also in this folder. Most all bills are automatic, but if I get one, I put it in my calendar area to take care of or pay it right away if urgent. My husband takes care of the other financial stuff so I need to only attack my folder the second Saturday of each month. Thanks Carla for all your videos.

I took care of my mom’s bills etc for 10 years while being in a different state. Also had to manage some of my sister’s chaos. Thank goodness for the Internet! Plus I have taken many moons shredding papers. I’m down to a reasonable amount now. And I continue to purge. I do however have two boxes of my parents paperwork in my garage (wills, med final bills, property records.) Instead of saving things to a file on my phone, I save them to an email account. That way if I lose my phone, I won’t lose my documents. Glad to see you don’t have file cabinets full of stuff. I had way too much back a few years ago. Phew!

For me paper clutter is the endboss also. 😩😩 Those tips/methods are great! Will try to reduce to one (12 month-) file holder and a "take action tray" as well and keep only those. (Additionally to my "for ever" file holder.) The idea with the zip locks is amazing!

Thanks so much for this video. I recycle 4 old envelopes to keep receipts. I label them quarterly (January - March 2024.) They get dumped at the end of the year.

Good tips! What about an Important Document folder or a Grab & Go Binder? Do you have one? You could share setting one up and your system, just a thought. I've been following your channel for a few years and enjoy every video. TY Wishing you a Very Healthy & Happy New Year!
