Absolutely fascinating approach. I'd never print at home - ink/toner ain't cheap and the low print res would drive me nuts. But will definitely queue a bunch up to go print at Staples on some fancy paper. Subscribed, incredible video. Thank you.
@TopSpot123
@TopSpot123 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I printed these at the original scan resolution of 300 dpi. I would have prefered to have them laser printed. Luckily at such a small size the ink jet prints don't seem low res to me. If you were to watch my Mario Kart Card Game video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nna8nXSZotCAoa8 , I mention that my local print shop has enhanced their self service options, even allowing you to bring your own paper. If cost is an issue, printing at home should be cheaper than Staples, but starting with a glossy cardstock should eliminate the need for laminating, eliminating a step and producing a fine result. If you follow this through to completion, I would love to see your results! Thank you for your thoughts.

you can find an inkjet for cheap, and if you can't do that you can always do what I did a couple years ago when I made these boxes and just print them out at your local library, for me it was $.50 a color print =-}
@lafontainek
@lafontainek 6 жыл бұрын
Most places that do printing services are sub 50 cents a standard 8.5x11 for card stock, so if you load it up properly you can hit up your local printer (FedEx, Staples, etc) and do a bunch in one go for less than $10, but yeah, unless you're using color laser/toner, this is pretty expensive... But, honestly, go with a company that does printing because they'll have everything set up to do nice quality from the get go (e.g. if you don't want to do the lamination, you can opt for high-gloss which will still look good for roughly the same price as non-gloss)

Clever! I love that they're a unique size (collecting purists can give a sigh of relief) to take up just the necessary space, with game manuals easily stored separately. And I love DIY gaming projects. Quite the springtime project you've inspired here.

Thank you for your Game Collection Storage videos. These really helped me. I have been trying to figure out a good solution for my Game Boy cartridges for a month now. After watching a couple of your videos the light bulb finally came on. It took me 3 whole days to do my collection. Now that project is behind me thanks to you. Also, one thing that really helped me was the, "don't let not-perfect get in the way of good" comment you said.

These tiny boxes are adorable! May use them for my GG collection. For my Game Boy collection I use a variation on the cassette case; the polyvinyl cassette case! It's a version of the standard cassette case that actually has a full cover similar to a DVD case. They can be bought for cheap, and all it takes is a quick resizing of a DS format cover to fit onto it. Coupled with a cardstock insert, it makes for a very secure and attractive storage solution.

Unfortunately I haven't posted any pictures yet, but that will be coming very soon (I just finished up my whole collection). Most websites that sell media protection will carry them. So funny! I was the opposite. I didn't know the printable boxes existed. I first had the idea to make small boxes or sleeves. I knew that front and rear box art was easy to locate. It was only while trying to find examples of box spines that I found the printable boxes. That is what brought the whole idea together. Thanks!

Love the idea. Great way to store your games without having to invest in full CIB collection and save space simultaneously. Only thing I could say is this is limited to people who use desktop computers and have a little tech sav. For example: between a smart phone, tablet, WiFi, and modern gen game consoles I haven’t touch an actual computer in a few years. Plus to do this you have to invest in the equipment necessary. Putting those obstacles aside I still love the idea. Also earlier you mentioned that using those websites to download the image and then taking it to a company for printing could cause an issue with copyright, but with a simple alteration to the design using the software you showed like say, a small stamp that reads “unofficial product”, couldn’t that circumvent any legal issues? Plus it wouldn’t detract from the overall quality. it’d be small and barely look any different from the original for collectors but diffferent enough to not infringe on copyright
@TopSpot123
@TopSpot123 7 жыл бұрын
+Greg Buffington On some level, I've known about the decline in desktop (& laptop) computer use over the last several years, but it never occurred to me that this would be relevant to my content until I noticed comments asking for the best iPad app to edit images with. I haven't been without a computer since I got my first pc in 1995, plus I use several at work, so I unfortunately projected that my found audience would be in a similar situation! But still, with public libraries, or perhaps friends or family members, I hope anyone who would like to proceed on a project like this can find a solution. As for copyright, I'm less concerned with the actual legality, but more concerned with an employee rightly trying to discourage an infringement, and the conflict therein. Thankfully, I've noticed one of my local printshops has improved the self service area so there needs not be any clerk involvement. I've taken advantage of this in a project that I'll be sharing in my next video. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

This is a great idea, and the fact that it doesn't involve destroying good DS cases/throwing out cassettes makes it all the better. I believe in having options, even if it makes it tougher to decide! It might seem silly but I have many of my original boxes for my cartridges, but I have them all stored separately in my garage. Thank you for this! I wanted to add some boxes of games of my childhood to my set, but being a child, I didn't keep many or they have bad wear, then I thought about making custom boxes. One search later and I'm here! I don't have a lamination machine but I do have gloss photo card, so hopefully that will do. Miniaturizing the boxes is a great idea though, and I'll try it with some PS1 & PS2 boxes as well! A well earned sub, I'll probably use this as room decor as well, thanks again!

That looks soooooo cool on a shelf. I would definitely consider doing it for my N64, SNES and GameBoy games.

Just only buy games you wanna play and think you will. Also limit yourself a few games every month or half for example 2 games every 2 weeks. That way you can enjoy games and not go overboard.

For me, game collecting isn't about purity but authenticity. Obviously, one's definition of authenticity is subjective, but the mini boxes truly are a great, authentic way of keeping the spirit alive, avoiding making less quality repros, and keeping the form factor low. I love it! I have made printed DS case covers for my GBA games, but it just doesn't feel right, the spines aren't authentic, they look like DS games, and it's nice to have some uniformity, but when it becomes too uniform, it loses what made each era unique.

Im very much tempted to do this since the change in size makes it somewhat viable to have on a shelf.

Wow glad this popped up in my recommended. I've started collecting for GB/GBC/GBA and N64 and haven't been able to come up with a good way to store them. So far, I managed to get a few of my GBA games into DS cases, but I didn't have cases for all of them, and I just had the classic GB and GBC carts in a little pocket sized tech case. And the N64 games are just stacked on my shelf. Luckily, everything sits in my closet under another shelf where they don't get any light, but I'd still like that clean, uniform look for everything. I think I might try this if I can convince my parents to get the cardstock. Thanks for the video, man. I'll definitely be trying this as soon as possible. Also... Nobody: Life hack channels: 16:34

@StephenVlog maybe a good idea when you run out of ds cases to modify, also maybe use binder pages designed for post cards to store the manuals since these boxes don't have room
