+Savage Lu Teachers on KZbin usually teach things because they enjoy doing that, whereas a lot of professors just teach because it's kind of part of their job, so it's often a pure routine to them without any real passion behind it.

At 8:15, the correct decomposition of the characteristic equation is (r - i * sqrt(|λ|)) * (r + i * sqrt(|λ|)), then the solution for the 3rd case is Φ(x) = A cos(sqrt(|λ|) * x) + B sin(sqrt(|λ|) * x).

just wondering if there is some connection between ODE seperability and PDE seperablity. They seem like completely different procedures.

Why did you opt to set the second ODE equal to zero but not the first? How do you make the determination of when to set it equal to 0?

They can both be equal to 0 when you rearrange it like that, but he's solving the second order ode first
