The dichotomy of the medieval duelling sport story being *exactly* the dichotomy of the Dark Souls series cracked me up. I would also totally get down with just watching that
@ImminDragon Жыл бұрын
I mean, that was the dichotomy in real medieval combat too. You had people in armor being charged at by literally naked Scotsmen with nothing but a shield and sword/axe/whatever. The Viking berserkers were also known to sometimes wear minimal armor, instead getting high as heck, leading to them being in a frenzied state where they basically went nuts in combat (and didn't feel the pain as much). You also see it with some of the African tribes' traditional gear; a shield as tall as they are, a long spear, and some good sandals. It's a trade off between being tanky or being nimble. The one thing you see a lot, though, is that the unarmored types relied heavily on shields. If you're going to go with minimal protection, at least make it something you can put in the way of the attacks.

@@ImminDragon Dark Souls is an accurate representation of pre-gunpowder combat noted
@gurigura4457 Жыл бұрын
@@ImminDragon Can you cite your sources on that? Berserkers are pretty much a myth, and "africans" generally didn't wear armour because they lacked the metallurgy to produce it in large quantities, and needed to be able to run long distances. Armour would encumber you in that case. I've never heard about the Scots thing, except in Braveheart, but that's as ahistorical as you can get for a film.
@ImminDragon Жыл бұрын
@@gurigura4457 The existence of *someones* who were called berserkers isn't disproven at all, and the symptoms observed back then match the plant known as Stinking Nightshade. Your explanation about the tribal gear is absolutely correct about why they went for nimble over tanky; it was the better choice given the materials available. And I know there are records from different times about the Celtic warriors. The name Polybious Histories comes to mind. I'll double check that.

Funnily enough, the "naked man with a stick" strategy is pretty similar to the story of Melankomas of Caria, a (possibly mythical) competitor in the ancient Greek Olympics. Back then, all boxing was bareknuckle and really simple: Punch your opponent until you knock them out cold or until they give up. No timer, no rounds, no rest. The subject of our tale would just dance around his opponent, dodging all punches and not making any offensive moves. Either his opponents would get frustrated at missing him constantly and forfeit, or they would swing until they just couldn't stand upright anymore. Melankomas supposedly won the Boxing event in AD 45 or 49 using this strategy, not scoring any knockouts nor throwing any punches.

Okay, to add to Zylus strange explanation of fierljeppen. Fierljeppen is basically pole vaulting over a river with a gigantic pole. It is so large that you hold the pole somewhere in the middle, instead of the far end (like with normal pole vaulting). During your swing to the other side, you need to climb the pole to the top (very fast). If you make it in time (and maintained balance and everything) you will be able to reach the other side of the river. Any misdirection in swing, losing balance or too slow climbing, results in you falling short of the distance to reach the other side. The increase in level is done with extending the pole in length in which case it is measured in meters how much further from the river you land. The real champions often jump from the top of those poles at the right angle to gain even more meters.
