It's a terrifying utopia becouse we'll be able to make any kind of content we want, which is good, but it will all be made by computers, killing human artistic expression. At least that's how I interpreted that.

It's utopian because, theoretically, we could make AI do more work for us and thus allow more people to pursue what they want to pursue, not what they need to pursue to survive. But it's dystopian because there isn't an economy on the planet prepared for the unprecedented amount of unemployment it could cause. The people who are pushing for it, capitalists and corporations, aren't considering this as they do it. They're just looking to pay less workers, consequences be damned. Its a fundamentally tainted technology.

They don't necessarily have to copy art, but they do rely on looking at other images you're right. I can make an AI draw Kim Kardashian eating a locust on top of a giant basketball, it's not really copied artwork though.

@@TheMirksta depends on the art. I know a lot of the more recent NovelAI anime ones are very much ripping the art style of existing established artists. If memory serves me correctly, its sourcing all of its images from Danbooru.

I don't know, that's like saying Photoshop will never replace traditional art. It hasn't though it's an enormous part of the growing and developing industry. In the future it is likely artists could use ai to assist in their own creations and more run of the mill art could be produced for businesses. A single image is one of the most basic forms of creation, movies, tv shows, video games will likely always require some degree of human input. I don't see how it's any different than an artist learning about the classics, and going on instagram and finding styles they like, everything is iterative to a degree. These AI art programs are super infantile and in the coming future will absolutely be able to create art that draws from such complex networks of pre-existing art that it won't be remotely comparable to plagerism.

AI art has been gaining notoriety after some goon a month or so back typed some phrases into an AI art program and won an art competition with what was produced - like winning a foot race with a motorcycle. There are other annoying debacles going on between AI art, the art community and crypto/meta bros. It’s a bit of a thing going on.

there is one of the major issues with ai generating, where an artist was streaming as they were drawing their art, and someone screenshot the drawing, produced a relatively broken ai generated image, but to those who wouldnt realize it would be more "complete" than the artists, and then said it was a "free base" generated from ai theres also an issue of people saying "heres ai art i made" when theyre only a requester/commissioner, as well as there being no systems in place to prevent "in the style of [artist name] {possible additional artist name}", a major instance is where an individual who is heavily against ai generated drawings had their name used by someone, who couldnt tell the image had the eyes facing inconsistently ignoring any of those, since technically you could ignore as "art theft is possible without ai", ai generated drawings kill off real artists jobs, and have even caused real artists to be harassed because people mistook their art as ai

Yeah, I heard that the artist that streamed their art had their art stolen by someone. Then, that person used an AI generation to finish the piece and filed a DMCA or some copyright claim on the actual artist. It also sucks for artists that posts their illustrations online when the algorithm of these AIs learns from submitted images that could be submitted by anyone.

the thing about art is there's more to it than just the product. there's already a lot of AI and other smart algorithmic stuff in music - anything from using an AI drummer for demo tracks to smart quantize of eg a bass take by asking it to analyse transients and then apply a process-based shifting of audio data to lock that bass onto a grid, compression and EQ that's reactive or able to tune itself specifically to its source material, and of course autotune. there's even entire genres of music created by allowing a system to generate music based on a set of inputs. a lot of modular synthesis works this way. the thing is, you can't replace all of music because neither the musicians nor the audience will let you. musicians and producers will embrace new technologies and work with them, but the artform of music exists in two stages - composition and performance. much like dance. or theatre. visual art doesn't distinguish between composition and performance. and here's the thing - even if humans add nothing that can be analysed and quantitatively stated (and i'd argue that they do actually), you can't replace live music. you can't replace performance. and yes, a robot w/ real smart AI could be the performer and i would count it as performance. my point is you can't just "iterate it out" and have people be happy with that.

There's already tons of live concerts with virtual performers. There's virtual voices and virtual instruments, so all you need is an AI to generate music and lyrics (which already exists), choreography and a 3D rig for the performer and you can have completely virtual live performances without any human interference.

@@Emperorhirohito19272 Unless you have a pretty rare form of complete photographic memory, when you draw something from your mind it's you interpreting your imagination of what something would look like. When an AI program draws something, it's copying and pasting from human-made art, but in a different configuration. There's a very big and crucial difference to be made between the two. If you want AI art to look like coherent art, it has to plagiarize source materials. When humans do this and people find out, they're condemned. But when software does it, apparently it's suddenly totally okay to steal art and call it original. It's formative to a great extent, to be fair, and the technology is cool. AI art is still plagiarizing human artists' work. (And in artist in this context, I am including photographers, writers, etc.)

We don’t create perfect renditions (mostly) because we forget the vast majority of information we take in, everything else we warp severely, we can only work by instructing appendages to do so. The AI doesn’t experience these failings. If we made the AI forget some percentage of the images it’s given, to warp the rest in various ways, and gave it the possibility to misplace pixels at random when generating images. Shouldn’t it become an artist? What if we didn’t just feed it images and instead carried a camera around and fed the AI every frame of video as it’s training data? How would it be different to us?

This is just how our brains work, it’s how we learn, it’s how we take in all the information we take in. We must observe it, we must create an understanding of if, and then we must imitate it. It’s not some lack of originality in modern society, it’s just how both we, and the AI function. Every amazing artist was inspired by what came before, just as everything the AI generates is inspired from what it has seen, there is beauty in both.

Honestly considering how AI art *has* to sample prexisting pictures on some levels, it's always going to be theft, there's copyright on various photos of celebs and the like, like, stock photos and the like exist for a reason. Watching all of them try to figure up how to go up a straight vertical pipe is so funny. You don't even need to do any prep loops. You can just start doing one loop and wall ride your way up. I did a race a while back that literally was just a single vertical tube and you just drive up it by wall riding at a sharp incline and then fall back down again.

I reckon, art is an expression of (and/or from) human emotion. Even if an algorithm can draw everything single possible thing you could possibly imagine ever, it is never going to be an expression of human emotion, and so it will never be able to attain that so valuable aspect. Hehe

I have a kettle like that, she doesn't like being called kettle though. Ironically goes off like one when called that. Also doesn't like that being pointed out either. Just can't make some people happy.
