thank you for the video, but i have a question, how do we get reflections from translusent material? do you have any tricks to achieve it?

Have you ever had the problem where your masked shadow does not update or leaves a trail of shadow? It’s almost like making a angle in snow effect but with the masked shadow because it does not update the last position of the shadow and it stays “painted”. Its happens to me randomly.

Resolved by changing "shadows / Shadow Map Method" from Virtual shadow maps to shadow maps in the project settings.

Such an amazing video thank you Joshua, however I have noticed that this doesn't work for directional lights and it shows the shadow of the plane, have you found any way to make it works with directional lighting ?

Interesting, I've not tried that yet. I have also had problems with rect lights on media planes too. Point lights seem to always work though.

Why duplicate the master material? You can change the blending mode in the duplicate instance.

Once I tick masked blending mode I get the black background again. Any thoughts?

I don't really get why the mocap wasn't working for you... The thing about the shadow mask is that it will be really hard to get right if your rotation changes. and the foot position will usually look odd.

hey man love your tutorial. Any advice how to do this with IMG player? I do not seem to find the material to duplicate it. I tried making the instance to Masked, but then entire plane is black (I do not know what I am doing though...)

Bro this lilee amazing video, I being having trouble with shadows in my exr sequence. Are you using png image sequence or exr sequence or another format of video like MP4??? I have 3 days trying but I can't get my exr sequence to cast shadows I'm using unreal engine 5.2....any advice

Exr is the best for unreal. You should post the problem in my discord with some images. Much easier to help that way

Nice tutorial Joshua! Great way to get shadows going. It is a bit of work but great effect. I don't really understand the last part of the video talking about UV Transforms and making the footage bigger etc, isn't it fine if the footage is just a static size? I don't see why you would want to make it bigger as you zoom in, because just by how the camera works the footage would appear bigger as you zoom in.

Ah yes, to clarify having the footage remain proportional based on the camera position is exactly what we need. I had made an error in a previous video where I assumed that the proportions were increasing.

Ive alwayd had problem with shadows. These bizzare triangles that appear when using rect lights and exposure in post process . Watched a great tutorial on virtual on shadow maps v (beta) version. Finally got rid of it.

How would you get a shadow for a live composure feed?

ideally, you would do a live soft key that includes the natural shadow.

@sybexstudio6318 Yes reflections are fairly simple but those are done by placing people in the scene on planes, so not composure. The key would be a single key but it keeps the shadow. just key the lighter green and add despill

@@JoshuaMKerr Yeah they probably keyed after the fact. Thats a lot easier for shadows too. I just thought I could record straight out of obs or something with shadows already.

Yeah, I mean most people use hardware keyers like ultimatte to get it all done live. They are expensive.

Thank you! This is great, but when I try to uncheck "Visible" and then check "hidden shadow", the shadow does not appear. Using a regular material with the domain set to "surface", blend mode "masked" and shading model "default lit". Is there anything else I could be missing? Ive tried making it two sided too but no luck.

Dear Joshua! Thank you for your constant interesting posts! Now i have a problem related to media plates… AND IT DRIVES ME NUTS! After importing i wanted to change the blending mode to see what changes… as it seem that made the connection from the output the opacity mode break. I can see it in the note three. - the line is black not white anymore. I tried to import a new media plate and start from scratch but it took the same settings as before….how could i fux the connection? Or reset the nodes? I am working on a music video and have no idea how to go on!! Help is very very much appreciated!!! Thanks in advance and keep up the good work. Best Marco

Well path tracing is the most accurate which is why people use it as a reference for their real time work with lumen or ray tracing.

Wow, can you go back to the comment about "chewing up your edges?" I've been doing dozens of shots using my green screen subject in masked mode. And it works, but I'd love better edges. With your mediaplate selected the edges are all highlighted so I couldn't really tell what you meant. I tried transparency mode and wow the edges DO look better! One of my big issues is that I'm rendering my screen screen footage as an object id (cryptomatte) so that I can bring it into resolve and have complete control over grading my Green screen footage to match the 3D environment. (UE doesnt have any colorgrading tools for media plates). However, Im finding that cryptomatte cuts a hard edge. Any soft gradients, such as opaque hair to alpha channel is lost with the cryptomatte. If there is a way to maintain the soft gradients within the transparencies AND still render it on a separate layer for compositing in Resolve, now THAT would be something! I tried rendering a cryptomatte with my mediaplate set to transparency but then the cryptomatte is broken! Argh!

Thank You sir for Your Video It helped me a lot...But I have a question I created a forest Sense and I put a lion green screen on my Forest When I was doing the render sequence my camera moved forward but I saw my rendered lion he was not there and my lion hi moving like left to right so can you help me please i render Walking forward lion to left to right and same time My camera is moving forward and both Lion green screen and My created sence Render together... it's helped me a lot 🌱✅

So the shadow doesn't move but the media does? You should double check that the material on your shadow plane is using the media texture you're using in sequencer. If its using the same media source then it should work.

Why isn’t this as simple as Blender for using green screen footage. They still haven’t sorted it, it’s def easier now in UE than it was but still needs work.
