I’ve written a long comment on its own about the possible reasons I know of for such a situation. It can be due to excess rains, creating health risk issues, it can be because of remains below his father’s that need to be moved (no kin left to pay the rent, so moved to the collective grave), it can be because of weather from typical US issues (I’m thinking hurricanes, tornadoes) to prevent the bodies to get to the surface and be damaged and contaminating water sources around (kinda the same reasons when there is too much rains), and quite often when the reasons isn’t a human mistakes too (same name for example), the cemetery are probably allowed to do their maintenance (oh yeah it can be town pipes maintenance related too) probably without having to warn the families and create too much anxiety or stress to them, also in case of religious beliefs that could contradict with the moving of the coffins, the town has probably a right to not bother the families to be effective for the bigger community at large etc. (I’m talking when a risk hazard is possible due to the weather or ground conditions). Clearly the worst situation here would be if the ground had a landslide and his father’s plot was taken away by that and he is really lost at the moment. I can’t think of any other direct « surprise missing » situations that wouldn’t be tornadoes or hurricanes too. I know California is known for their earthquakes too, so it might have been a situation with one too.

I think the most likely scenario - because of how socially akward and inept he is, is that he fully didn't pay the plot rent fees. Not sure about how it works in US, but I would assume this is the same for most of the big cities - you have to pay a fee for the plot. If you don't, they will move the body to the free group grave. It's issue with growing societies - living and dying in very populated areas. Should have cared more about the dad's remains probably. Not like it really matters - dust to dust and stuff.

tbh the advice didn't seem that great... but then again I'm not from the us, so idk what the easily available and cheap food items are over there. personally, if you're worried about fresh produce going bad, I'd recommend buying frozen veggie mixes, canned stuff like corn, beans and tuna. and then, when you buy fresh meat of your choice, portion it up before putting it into the freezer. for sides, pasta and rice survive in your pantry long enough and you can alternate between them as accompaniments to yesterday's leftover meat&sauce&veggies. play around with spices and seasonings. fuck around and find out how much do you need to cook for one portion and how much of it can you freeze for later before you start hating the dish. oh, and the "sides" stuff usually has a weird texture after freezing, so make sure to only make enough for today or to leave in the fridge. for breakfast, a ham and cheese sandwich never misses. you can alternate with the canned tuna. oh and you can freeze pre-cut bread as well! either unfreeze it immediately by toasting it, or leave it out during the night for it to thaw. for snacks, a whole fruit, like a banana or an apple, requires no prep, gives you vitamins AND a sugar boost, and is just tasty. hope this helps someone :)

Noah is so real for his questions tbh. I grew up where my folks only cooked a few simple meals, and the rest was box, frozen, or take out, so it was really difficult figuring out how to stock a kitchen when I first had my own place in college (even though I'm not a picky eater). Luckily, I knew a fair amount of cooking basics for different one offs, and had really supportive roomates who just let me tag along and cook with them (plus I was a food-buyer at my college coop for a semester), and it really got me to start experimenting with spices and just seeing what worked out! But that's so hard to learn growing up if there's not an adult in your life showing you, or there's usually premade foods around. Now I do a better mix of home-cooked/premade etc, though I have a long ways to go, though going grocery shopping can still be super intimidating if I'm not buying the same things each time.

Noah- I struggle with this all the time. And I'm a mom so it's not just for me but for everyone in the house. Find a veggie you like. My hubby likes baby carrots with a Dill dip I found at Aldi. He also like cauliflower. My kids LOVE bell peppers. The baby carrots take no prep beyond opening the bag. If you want, find containers and portion them out so it's easy to grab and go for a snack or a side. Hard boiled eggs are great. And if you make more than you feel like you can eat or stand, you can always turn it into egg salad or use to top a chef salad to mix it up.

Also, overnight oats is great! A cup of yogurt with steel cut oats and some milk of your choice. Add fruit if you want. Leave in the fridge overnight and it's a perfect grab and go breakfast. They sell if pre-made now (brekki is one brand) but to customize it yourself is pretty easy.

On Duran's dad being taken out of his plot, I'm not sure how it works in the US, but here in the Philippines, or at least in my hometown, if someone is buried in a public cemetery, the bones can be exhumed and either be moved to a smaller plot be thrown, or maybe even be donated to hospitals for research. My sister's dad died a few years ago, and we never knew where he was buried, and this was their explanation to us. All we could do was light a candle for him.
