The "jigging" of a horse that is anxious to return to the barn may escalate into dangerous behavior like bolting, bucking, or rearing. Watch as Charles demonstrates how to incrementally train your horse to walk home with body control exercises.

I like this. Working on a problem with a horse that actually Shows the problem. Most vids, the trainer explains the process but the horse acts nearly perfect.

I kind of like Clinton Anderson's approach, which is a little bit more hard-nosed: If the horse wants to rush home, let him - but once home, he'll be running small circles and sweat and pant, and back out on the trail he gets rest and leisure. Still makes it the horse's choice what to do, and soon he'll say, "I like it out on the trail with you! Let's not rush home!" :)

The only thing I can see going wrong with that approach is that the next time you go in that pen, the horse might start getting stressed out because of that very method I can see where you’re coming from with it though

@@lunaphoenix5207 Ha, ha! Thank you for your response to that 4 year-old comment! Indeed, my own views have since evolved on the matter. While this original comment would be along the lines of kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4PalYKHisdojKM I have now largely followed his evolution to a kinder, fluffier, and more compassionate horseman, asking first: "Why is my horse jigging? Destination addiction? Anxiety about his current location? ..."

@@matthiasweiss1144 oh wow, I didn’t even see that, sorry for any inconvenience about that, and it’s good to hear how your view changed to be like that :)

And now that I’ve seen that video I can definitely see how you would have thought that a lot more

The stone calmness of these horse people makes me feel utterly jealous. I would honestly pay anything to have it. Just brushing my hot mare today made me weak in the knees. Dangit.

Have to try that. Could not get my Morgan gelding to walk at all...does go forward but jigs or trots all the time. No matter heading back or going. He is a hot horse. Just got back from a 2 hour trail ride and would not walk.

I had an older part-Morgan horse like that- I couldn’t get him to do a flat walk no matter what I did, and you couldn’t tire him out. He finally wore me out,and I got rid of him!

Yes reins are short feel, at this point you cant trust him, and if to much takes to long to get to get hold of him, for both to be safe
