Really nice to see someone play this as opposed to only tweaking it

very rich demo of Lyra-8, probably with the most musical and sound range I've seen so far!

Awesome video, huge thx! If anyone of you is using a Lyra, too, consider playing it as an instrument. To really explore this unit even further: use a Vermona lancet filter, feed it into pitchfactor (get mad at this point) and use a little reverb on it. Strymon, digitech, empress - you name it, they all sound VERY decent. Pick your poison. A little reverb goes a long way. Also recommend: chorus vibrato pedals on the Lyra. Instant love. Enjoy this beauty of a very unique instrument. If you’re reading this, the Lyra might be something for you. Also consider cosmos by soma. Best device I’ve ever bought. Can’t miss with this couple

Also, do you think the newer version of lyra8 (standard black) can generate the same noises/feedbacks you performed here? I make power electronics/industrial and your demo really suits my style.

Wow you're actually 'playing' it. Mine usually plays me. great demo Owen. for an easy cheap but brilliant fx unit, I use the Korg Nu Tek. Recommended.

Lol, yeah the Lyra takes some time to learn. Thanks for the tip!

Nice color ! ... mine is a light acua 70s green ... are you using external effects? Which one do you recommend... somehow it does sound different... or I bet is just me that I can’t get a hang of it yet 😞
@owenface14 жыл бұрын
No external effects! The Lyra-8 takes a while to get the hang of, don’t give up!

Since you seem to have a pretty deep understanding of the Lyra, how do you use the Hyper LFO? I’m having a hard time understand how to integrate it in a musical way. Thanks!!

What speakers do you hook up with this?
@owenface13 жыл бұрын
Some kind of full range PA speaker would be best in my opinion.

Sounds Heavy.... What is it that sets the Pacifist apart from the regular versions you think? Is it always distorted like that? Or is it more playable?

Would you by any chance know the song: agalloch - the Grain? I was wondering if you could make a video on the scale they used in their sounds. The first song i had to think of when you played this lyra 8. My lyra 8 will come in the mail today or tomorrow and I'm really excited. I only have experience with tuning by ear and no other music theory and all. Maybe u can show me the scale they used in this song and how to tune it to that. Thank you for the awesome tutorial videos. Learned a ton already about scales and tuning in general :). Have a good one

awesome demo, is this all lyra8 only? or is it going through FX or a filter on the more 'tamed' bits of this demo?

In what way would you say the sound is different compared to other lyras you own?
@gordonbennett79314 жыл бұрын
If the components and working environment are the same then it's probably purely subjective. I doubt that any 2 sound exactly the same at it is anyway such is the nature of the instrument and how it responds differently to touch etc

Alex B Hard to describe but to my ears this one just has a little bit more magic in the tone,... it just sounds great. I’m tempted use the vintage guitar comparison,.... many guitars of the same make and model, made out of the same kind of wood will all sound very similar, but one or two might just have that special something, just little bit more flavour. I do know that there has been at least 4 revisions of the circuit board as well. The earlier ones were slower and darker, while the newer ones are faster and brighter. Also from the faq section of the soma website. “We got a small batch of ICs ( used in the voices oscillators) with unique properties that allow getting a very big range of tune on each voice, so even on the lower voices you can get very high notes and get infrasound on the higher voices. Also, with these ICs the FM is more deep, bright and crazy. But as a drawback, some voices (randomly from unit to unit) can have a kind of sub harsh noise (enharmonic oscillations) that appear only in high PITCH pots rate and are totally masked by the delay or chord playing. We decided to make a batch of LYRAs using these ICs because the benefits from these unique properties are much more than the drawbacks.” This is NOT one of those mentioned above but I did think it was a relevant to the discussion of why different Lyra’s sound different. And also goes to show just how much small differences in components can affect the overall sound of the instrument.

@@owenface1 out of interest, if you have owned a few Lyra 8's in the past did you sell them on and, if so, what made you sell and what made you buy one again?
@owenface14 жыл бұрын
Gordon Bennett One I sold to help fund my Pulsar 23. Another was supposed to match my black one in every detail, (specifically the washers/nuts on the switches), but didn’t so I returned it. It was brand new production serial number in the 45xx’s and sounded very different from my 12xx’s black model. I owned one of the newer light green models but sold it off when I found out about the olive green pacifist edition. They all sounded different in their own way, some a little more stable like the pacifist. or with very delicate vibrato, softer sound, and very clean/long delay like the light green edition, or unstable with short, dirty delay and dirtier sounding modulation like my black model.... also played one of the new pink models that was similar to the light green but with deeper vibrato. I wouldn’t bet that one colour sounds characteristically different from another but from one Lyra to the next there can definitely be a noticeable difference in sound and feel.

@@owenface1 thanks for the info. Very thorough and helpful :) Great demo by the way. I assume the Pacifist will be a keeper this time?

that tuning did you use at 4:59 when you were playing it like a hangdrum?

It’s not a specific tuning. I just tune by ear starting at 4:08!

So cool! Do you know if yours is the same color as the regular green? Or is the limited edition a different green?

This is the limited edition “The pacifist” in custom olive green. Not the same as the current production mint green models.

What speakers do you use with this bad boy?
@owenface13 жыл бұрын
I’ve just been using headphones and or small guitar amp for home jams. I’ve been lucky enough to play a few shows with proper sound reinforcement and imho any good quality full range PA speaker should do. The louder the better!

Just out of morbid curiosity - I see you already have a Lyra 8 - why did you get a second one? Is this by any chance different from their standard model? It doesn't seem so, but I may be missing something here.
@owenface14 жыл бұрын
Walter Smetak ...While it’s not advertised as being any different with regard to the the actual electronics; it is a limited edition colour with limited edition custom fitted case, only 111 units. That being said, there have been at least 4 circuit revisions that I’m aware of since the Lyra was originally released. I’ve found the newer ones do sound different from the older models (a lot more details in a comment thread below⬇️) and this one does indeed sound different from the older one I own.
