I think the acceptance part is huge in calming that initial anxiety. I can still do everything I did before. I can.

That's awesome! Acceptance was a huge key for me, even right now typing this my neck muscles are spasmed, my anxiety is pumping but acceptance in stages is the key.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thanks for posting this. The details you provided were very helpful. Even reading people’s comments in this thread has been eye opening. Apparently I’ve been struggling with Somatic OCD off and on since I was a kid. Cheers to recovery🍻

The hardest thing about breathing OCD is the "what if" questions that come from the unknown.. What I mean is, I've never actually passed out from lack of oxygen (regardless of how short of breath I am), but it's that fear that it could happen during any of the times I think about my breathing.. I think I'm a special case in that as long as I know I won't come to any harm, my recovery will be fast, but I'm still so uncertain about my breathing, and if this can actually kill me.. I once had heartbeat OCD, and that was much easier to recover from.. This breathing one is the toughest I've ever dealt with.. Again, the uncertainty is what makes this battle so tough

I’m in the same exact boat! I’m afraid of passing out or it being something serious every time I have a panic attack. Or the what if when I’m driving etc. it’s hell.
@emilybalcerak78612 жыл бұрын
I totally feel this, but mine is the opposite! I had this intense fear of passing out as a teenager, especially at a concert/public event, but I've never passed out in my life. I'm now 26 and have obsessions with my heartbeat, which I find so much harder for me, even if the root is the same.

I really appreciate your videos, I’ve been dealing with this for about a year and it jumps around from theme to theme, my biggest one is eye movement, I am starting to meet with Rob. Your videos and his are great and I know there is light at the end of the tunnel, even if there isn’t , I’m good and have a great life.

Sometimes there is an overlap of somatic ocd, panic disorder and agoraphobia. What would the recovery pathway look like in such a complicated case?

mine is mixed up w trans ocd so the fear of being stuck also clings to “if it doesn’t go away then that must mean its dysphoria” should i tackle that the same way?

Going through the same thing Bill unfortunately. Making me really ill with sore throat, chest pain, etc. Do you get that too? Sending healing vibes.
@billsmith72333 жыл бұрын
@@Scorpio_moon74 For me I have a lump in the throat feeling a lot of the time so my brain is naturally focused on my throat because of that which makes the swallowing that much more difficult to deal with. I don't have a sore throat / chest pain as much. All the best to you as well

I have double somatic ocd sensations at once. They are breathing, clearing throat and swallowing due to saliva etc.. it triggers mainly when im trying reading as i obviously get distracted by these uncomfortable sensations and then have to start the sentence again. So its dealing with the compulsive reading ritual along with the somatic ocd. So its really hard yo do ERP. I havent started it yet. I dont know how yo deal with this. I know its about perfection reading so i need to be confortable and i cant with the somatic symptoms

Oh i just realised what nick said. There exposure is just to sit with it, not to be afraid of experiencing them.

Hey Doc I have a confusion , you said that when checking thought or checking sensation comes. Should I avoid or try myself not to let them check
@thementalhealthexperience55814 жыл бұрын
Hey! Well this is a tough question because it would be unrealistic to say you’re going to automatically or quickly not check it. You’re probably very used to checking say your sensation. So gradually going towards not checking or comparing. This is huge

My somatic ocd, saliva in my mouth, swallowing as feel like something is in my throat and catching my breath is affecting my studying as that’s when it’s worse and I’m really aware of it. I can’t really help it and I can’t read more than one chapter a day. I try to live with the discomfort but it hard. I also have other ocd but the somatic is interrupting my studies. Any advice?
