Some Atlanta residents say Apple AirTags are tracking them | What to do if this happens to you

Tracking your lost items is becoming easier with new technology like the Apple AirTag. You can find your missing keys, wallet or purse with the press of a button. But with the solution to one problem came the advent of another; instead of using the AirTag to track items some are using them to track people.
Police reports of unwanted tracking have surfaced in Atlanta, Gwinnett County and Cobb County.

The loophole that they were aware of and knew exactly where it will lead. Just like darker side of the tag, thieves are government’s best friends. They help governments bring more security measures in place which is nothing but govts tools of control and surveillance for the general population. More technological security measures; more cameras, 5G, AI, facial recognition, gun control, security and police drones etc many more to come in the very near future. You want your life to be safe and secure? Don’t worry the government got it! They catch thieves, mass media does its thing then most of them get released with no charges. As there is nothing for the government mafia to get from them anyway and there aren’t enough cells to keep them all locked up they just let them go, but media won’t tell you that side of story. You all just continue with your lives believing that bustard they showed on 6 o’clock news last night is finally got caught and prisoned.

Apple should expand this tracker to include two way tracking. Making is so the object can also locate the owners phone. That way if the owner gets separated from their property it can be returned but also so that in cases like this the thieves can be located.

Apple "didn't come up with a solution" and the technology isn't "so new" - Apple just took the idea from Tile which has been providing this tech for years. A good design solves problems without replacing them nor creating an even bigger one. I do not believe that Apple couldn't see the side effects of this product overweighting the lost keys. The thing is that probably 'the problem' airTags are solving isn't our lost essentials, but rather something closer to Apple's own needs. And compared to that goal, the public safety is secondary.
@jawaring4367
@jawaring4367 2 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what's happening. It would have been easy for them to make something that didn't produce all of these problems, but they want to have users create an even larger tracking network for them. There are now hundreds of thousands of these additional nodes collecting location data between apple phones all over the world whether they're the owners of the device or not.

The problem is that this been happening before Apple Air Tags. They have Tile, Samsung Smart Tag, hell they got Tractive which is weather proof used for dogs to track cars. This has been happening for years. The only reason Air Tags are being discover because Apple products talk to each other. If you have a apple phone, iPad or even a computer, they will detect the air tag. Android, you are screwed. This isn't new folks. Nope these people know air tags can be easily detected, they are going to go back to Tile or what brand they use to use.

@chriskelvin248
@chriskelvin248 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Yes, I have no doubt that people have been using consumer gadgets to illegally track people without their knowledge before AirTag arrived on the market. BUT, devices like Tile and Smart Tag only use Bluetooth to supply location. Bluetooth peters-out beyond 100', usually much less. So tracking a car across town is not possible that way. The pet tracker you mentioned CAN long-range track though. This category has been on the market for years and uses a cell phone SIM card to ping the company's server when requested by the customer. There are more costs and much more paper trail associated with this kind of method. What sets the AirTag apart from all of these things is that they are dirt cheap, readily available and (mostly) anonymous. AirTag cleverly leverages the worldwide population of OTHER peoples' Apple products without their knowledge, but I'm sure consent is given when you click "agree" on the 10 pages of legaleese included with every iOS update, lol. Luckily, any AirTag constantly in your proximity leaves a hint that it's there. You get a notification that something is pinging you.

It already is. Air Tags identify themselves to any nearby iPhone or iPad. It's just an identification number. The iPhone then adds the GPS coordinates of the iPhone itself and transmits that to Apple. The owner of the Air Tag knows the registration number of that Air Tag and can look up the most recent detection and presumably the tracking history. Apple announces that the Air Tag does not keep a history; and while that part is true, it is also slightly misleading. The Air Tag does not *need* to keep a history because the nearby iPhone and the servers that manage the network keep the history.

Some types are actually wired into the ignition system which allows the vehicle to be disabled and therefore stationary until the tow truck arrives. It's not that alarming. The used car lot is supposed to remove the tracking device once the vehicle loan is paid off, but many times, that never happens.

I’m glad that there is an easy fix for it, with just removing the battery from the AirTag as long you have easy access in finding the AirTag, if someone puts an AirTags beneath your car, unless you have a lift or a sturdy jack, that AirTag will not be easy to find, especially if someone hid deep inside the external or internal structure of your car. Time to think like a thief, and here is what I think they are doing. They spot a person in a store, coffee shop, etc., who looks like they can afford to own nice things. Once they have chosen their victim, they place a tracking device on that person's vehicle and track them for a week or two to pinpoint where they live and their daily habits. When the time is right, they burglarize the person's home and make off with the loot. It becomes a game for them. The Air Tag leverages a nearby iPhone for GPS and relaying into the internet. If the driver is using an Android phone (LG, Samsung, etc) the AirTag won't work. In other words, the Air Tag cannot by itself transmit its location; it does not know its location! However, your phone knows its location and thus any nearby Air Tag must be within about 30 feet or so of your iPhone.

That was good until the end. But left me with a question. If you have an iPhone you can get alerted to the tag's presence and find it. If you don't have an iPhone AND you know where the tag is, of course you can disable it. But if you don't have an iPhone, can you still get a notification that there is a tracking device on the car? Or can only iPhones detect the tags? There needs to be an app that alerts you right away if any signal is detected immediately around your car, instead of having to identify that the signal is following you some distance.

Correct me if I'm wrong but these "air tags" are low energy Bluetooth transmitters (aka BLE)... If that's true then what device Is detecting and sending your location on? Your own Apple phone? SO, Why is it doing that if its not paired to it or authorised to interact with that device? and why is it sending such information on to Apple Services for an unknown/unidentified recipient to use? With a low energy transmitter something is acting as the receiver, adding GPS information and providing ut to Apple services... Is the problem the transmitter ir the Apple iPhone?

That’s actually a good thing that apple has this. Because there have been other trackers for YEARS. And those won’t notify you if it’s near you. 🤷🏽‍♀️ (obviously if you have an iPhone)

yeah, only problems are, like you said, you need to have an iphone to get the notification. they could also just use the other brands and people won't get any notification. crazy scary world we live in.

It sounds like it's time for Apple to make an app available for most mobile devices that can detect and warn about these unwelcome devices they are peddling! Also, I wonder if Apple going to continue down their same path of supporting criminals and shirking corporate responsibilities or will they provide the owner information for the tag/recipient of the tracking data to the subject being tracked or to law enforcement? Without the need for court issued warrants? Only time will tell I suppose.

The advertising fliers are kind of a gray area. It has to be a private parking lot and must have permission from the owners to solicit and have liability insurance. I've been to many car shows and other hobby events only to return to my car to find my wipers filled with ads and business cards. There are some rules that have to be followed like the ad has to be relevant to the venue you're at. In other words, if you're at a car show they can't place ads about a mattress sale. You can opt-out by placing a sign "No Solicitation Please."

Buy a EMF meter, relatively affordable and available. Use the EMF meter to sweep your belongings and vehicles. Some Android phones are supposed to operate as an EMF meter but your sure bet is a very sensitve EMF stand alone meter you can get on Amazon for about $35. Your life and privacy is worth it.

The reporter never asks the person who they think might have placed it there. Ex boyfriend or husband? Title loan company wanting to track the asset in case the person defaults on the loan? Some of these "buy here, pay here" used car places will place trackers on the cars too.

That private detective is FOS. You cannot attach a tracking device on a vehicle without the consent of the owner even if it's parked in a public area. Consent would be like contracts from a "buy here/pay here" used car dealer where you sign to allow them to attach the device to the vehicle to ease in repossession if you fail to pay. Even the police need a probable cause warrant to use trackers. . You can attach one to your own vehicle but must inform the driver if you loan your car, or probably better to just remove it. Anyone else could be charged under Federal Wiretapping laws.

The problem of Tracking Device has not become a new thing because of the AirTag. If someone wanted to track YOU before AIRTAG became a thing, they already could by buying Expensive device made specifically for that and you wouldn't even know you are being tracked because you do not have any device that detect tracker. The only difference today is if a criminal dumb enough choose to use an Airtag, then there is a possibility the target will be notified because he has an iPhone.

If you find an airbag or any other tracking device on your car, it belongs to you. The US Supreme Court ruled in a 1957 case where a scammer would place dollar bills on windshields and then have drivers arrested for theft if they didn’t pay blackmail that anything put on a car belonged to the owner. The federal courts have included boots and barnacles placed by law enforcement in that context. Anyone boots your car, including city parking enforcement, you remove it yourself by any means and it now belongs to you. The moment a bug of any type is placed on a vehicle it becomes property of the owner even if placed by law enforcement under a search warrant. The US Supreme Court in the 1970s turned away an appeal by the FBI about this. A leaflet placed on a car becomes the property of the owner if they care to claim it. The other side of the coin is that if you remove a boot yourself and the booter tries to take it from you, that is robbery and you are allowed to defend your new property by any legal means at your disposal. Police and judges aren’t aware of the law in this regard and often get nasty shocks when the tables are turned on them in court. This is also why many municipalities are abandoning boots and barnacles in the US. The cost of replacing them after people take them is just too high. They also can’t charge them with theft, because the boots now belong to the owners of the vehicles after the police “gifted” the boots to them. Same thing with ANY tracking device. Doesn’t matter who put it there or why.
