Some Atlanta residents say Apple AirTags are tracking them | What to do if this happens to you

Tracking your lost items is becoming easier with new technology like the Apple AirTag. You can find your missing keys, wallet or purse with the press of a button. But with the solution to one problem came the advent of another; instead of using the AirTag to track items some are using them to track people.
Police reports of unwanted tracking have surfaced in Atlanta, Gwinnett County and Cobb County.

The loophole that they were aware of and knew exactly where it will lead. Just like darker side of the tag, thieves are government’s best friends. They help governments bring more security measures in place which is nothing but govts tools of control and surveillance for the general population. More technological security measures; more cameras, 5G, AI, facial recognition, gun control, security and police drones etc many more to come in the very near future. You want your life to be safe and secure? Don’t worry the government got it! They catch thieves, mass media does its thing then most of them get released with no charges. As there is nothing for the government mafia to get from them anyway and there aren’t enough cells to keep them all locked up they just let them go, but media won’t tell you that side of story. You all just continue with your lives believing that bustard they showed on 6 o’clock news last night is finally got caught and prisoned.

Apple should expand this tracker to include two way tracking. Making is so the object can also locate the owners phone. That way if the owner gets separated from their property it can be returned but also so that in cases like this the thieves can be located.

Apple "didn't come up with a solution" and the technology isn't "so new" - Apple just took the idea from Tile which has been providing this tech for years. Apple just have a larger ecosystem so it's more effective. Also, airtags are not GPS devices. Apple can presumably identify the owner and account link for any airtag.

The problem is that this been happening before Apple Air Tags. They have Tile, Samsung Smart Tag, hell they got Tractive which is weather proof used for dogs to track cars. This has been happening for years. The only reason Air Tags are being discover because Apple products talk to each other. If you have a apple phone, iPad or even a computer, they will detect the air tag. Android, you are screwed. This isn't new folks. Nope these people know air tags can be easily detected, they are going to go back to Tile or what brand they use to use.

@chriskelvin248
@chriskelvin248 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Yes, I have no doubt that people have been using consumer gadgets to illegally track people without their knowledge before AirTag arrived on the market. BUT, devices like Tile and Smart Tag only use Bluetooth to supply location. Bluetooth peters-out beyond 100', usually much less. So tracking a car across town is not possible that way. The pet tracker you mentioned CAN long-range track though. This category has been on the market for years and uses a cell phone SIM card to ping the company's server when requested by the customer. There are more costs and much more paper trail associated with this kind of method. What sets the AirTag apart from all of these things is that they are dirt cheap, readily available and (mostly) anonymous. AirTag cleverly leverages the worldwide population of OTHER peoples' Apple products without their knowledge, but I'm sure consent is given when you click "agree" on the 10 pages of legaleese included with every iOS update, lol. Luckily, any AirTag constantly in your proximity leaves a hint that it's there. You get a notification that something is pinging you.

It already is. Air Tags identify themselves to any nearby iPhone or iPad. It's just an identification number. The iPhone then adds the GPS coordinates of the iPhone itself and transmits that to Apple. The owner of the Air Tag knows the registration number of that Air Tag and can look up the most recent detection and presumably the tracking history. Apple announces that the Air Tag does not keep a history; and while that part is true, it is also slightly misleading. The Air Tag does not *need* to keep a history because the nearby iPhone and the servers that manage the network keep the history.

A good design solves problems without replacing them nor creating an even bigger one. I do not believe that Apple couldn't see the side effects of this product overweighting the lost keys. I wonder if they can put in place a registration system. Like, before the Airtag will work, you have to register it on a website that syncs with Apples tracking service and you have to provide your personal and contact information or a photo of ID. The Air Tag leverages a nearby iPhone for GPS and relaying into the internet. If the driver is using an Android phone (LG, Samsung, etc) the AirTag won't work. In other words, the Air Tag cannot by itself transmit its location; it does not know its location! Each AirTag has an unique sn number which can be seen on the back of the AirTag and on the website when bringing a phone equipped with NFC chip next to it. Since upon AirTag activation one has to link to their Apple ID to the tag, the police can surely figure out who is the person behind it. Apart from that, in the app you can actually see how long the AirTag has been traveling along side you and every location ping it has transmitted to its owner, so that people can figure out when and where the AirTag was planted on them. There are other similar tracking devices that sells cheaper than AirTag yet all of these privacy/safety protection features mentioned above are absent, but no one seems to care. If someone really wants to track you, they can use any of those device and there is literally no way for you to ever know its existence, so ironically it better off be an AirTag.

Someone put one of those in a bag I found a month ago(November 2021) at a New Jersey train station .I'm thinking I'm behind on technology, but this video shows not everyone knows about it. This was a train worker/ticket collector who( he told me) had his bag stolen the night I saw it abandoned .Yet he waited all day until I got back at night there to where I lived/stay in New Jersey , when he could've met up with me in NYC where I travel to. It sucked that the dreadlocked dude was in such a rush that I left the actual connector to my charger in his bag.I had disconnected my charger in order to use his portable charger , which is the reason I bothered to take the bag.it was only afterwards that he told me where he his the tracker ,which I never heard about until then.So much for losing charger plug .

I guess they'll have to make air tags purchasable only in person and with a verifiable ID- maybe even a criminal background check- that is then connected to the tag. So when one is found, they can locate who placed it. Or maybe they could make it so that air tags work the other way too. Not only can it be used to track, but somehow the air tag can also locate the one who is using it to track. At this point, I wish the police would do some stings with these tracked vehicles. Maybe get the owner a rental and have an undercover cop drive the car around to see what happens. Maybe they could catch some of these people and they could be slapped with a hard penalty. I think the law needs to catch up, and fast. And couldn't new cars' computers be set to instantly locate a strange tracker on the vehicle so you wouldn't even need to use your phone? Technology is getting WAY too invasive. Wasn't it bad enough when the Big Tech companies and our cars and phones knew where we were? Now some random stranger, or worse, has the same ability.

APPLE are a smart bunch of people ... Why haven't they built into this device, a Mechanism that makes the AIR TAG reveal the users. They should render the mechanism 'unusable' until you somehow identify yourself before attaching it to something. Perhaps an open panel where you have to 'retina scan' or 'finger print access' the AIR TAG before it starts working! This would be helpful if it is misused, for instance if an ex boyfriend tracks his former girlfriend and murders her .... It can trace the Tracker back to him. Hopefully these Tags keep a record of all the places it has tracked to.🇬🇧👍🏾

That private detective is FOS. You cannot attach a tracking device on a vehicle without the consent of the owner even if it's parked in a public area. Consent would be like contracts from a "buy here/pay here" used car dealer where you sign to allow them to attach the device to the vehicle to ease in repossession if you fail to pay. Even the police need a probable cause warrant to use trackers. . You can attach one to your own vehicle but must inform the driver if you loan your car, or probably better to just remove it. Anyone else could be charged under Federal Wiretapping laws.

While there has been genuine instances of AirTags being used to track people this isn’t one of them. Judging by the screenshot she posted which says "Unknown Accessory Detected" this was caused by AirPods. If it was an AirTag causing the notification it would've specifically said "AirTag Detected" and it would show and give instructions on how to disable it. Lots of people have had this issue with their own or friends AirPods Pro causing this Find My notification to pop up which people automatically presume to be an AirTag due to the inaccurate media coverage such as this.
