Francis, you should try out a circular ship design if you like railguns. You could experiment with different layouts. What worked for me is a large one with 2 pairs of railguns going in the center in each major direction (left, right, up, down, in a plus shape, 16 large railguns total). You can put the engines in the leftover space diagonally, and then some heavy armor in a perfect circle shape. In battle, you turn on indefinitly some of the engines to keep your ship rotating in one direction constantly. From that point your ship will act like a "gatling gun", one line of railguns always firing, the rest reloading. All you need to do is assign targets and watch the show. The constant rotation will also spread out most of the incoming damage along the full arc of the ship's hull.
@hquest
@hquest Жыл бұрын
Circular ships are much more complex to manage as you have all sides to reinforce, shield and overall protect. Had he elongated his design a little to fit the extra thrusters instead of widening it, he would had avoided being a larger target surface area. And he is still very vulnerable to close combat.

Another improvement on sun diver would be to increase power delivery efficiency. Instead of one one t3 reactor (it has the best efficiency for powering long distant rooms and the worst efficiency for adjoining rooms, while t1 is the opposite) place dedicated t2s. The improvement will be huge.

*@Francis John* 1:08:35 I think you can "Rescue" crew from disabled enemies. I have at SOME rare occasions been able to hail a disabled enemy ship & been able to transfer crew to my ship. I don't know why exactly, but if you remove weapons & engines (leave reactor, helm & airlock, intact) so they can't do anything, then hail them. Maybe it worked because I had available fame, maybe it worked for some other reason, not sure yet.

I'm torn about this. I love ship-design games like Avorion, and it looks like you're having fun. I'm just finding the idea of power being hand-carried by crew to be hard to swallow. You've got a high-tech spacefaring civilization that hasn't discovered power cables.
@FrancisJohnYT

I get the crew carrying power as a game mechanic for design limitations, but as a reality it's stupid. It would be like carrying petrol to the engine of the ship instead of just using a pipe and pump. Though I suppose in a way it's similar to coal powered ships.

With rail guns you can already move to the maximum level zone (18 if I'm not mistaken). Anything below level 16 will be too easy with such weapons (in fact, 2 max-length rail guns were enough for me for level 18 zones - these weapons are too powerful for the mechanics of this game). The empire with the centaur icon has the most interesting ship designs, in my opinion.

I found two rail guns were almost hard countered by two flak cannons. It's why I went with more guns instead of longer rails. I think flak shooting down rail guns is relatively new.
@RK-qg8ko
@RK-qg8ko Жыл бұрын
@@FrancisJohnYT On larger ships, flak is less common - they rely more often on armor and shields. And the length of the rail guns adds “damage” and (if I’m not mistaken) the speed of the projectiles; at high speed the flak is not as effective. The flak was added a long time ago, and the shells knock down by all types of point defenses - some more effective than others. Among the new ones are machine guns. It would be interesting to see them in action.

9:20 try adding the 2 missing doors between the reactor and the shied, they might use them both and you would have less crew to crew collision; they slow down more if they have to pass through each other. You might want to add the extra door on the room or even downgrade to 2 2 men bunkers, this would allow 2 crews to exit the room to go feed the shield. 28:00 You don't want to have a "split ship" because that causes crew to use the airlock instead of corridors to fetch a battery from the other side of the ship... That happens all the time in a fight when the only reactor left on the ship is in the other sections 31:30 Infinite fire does not damage friendlies at least while at a station.

I like your design philosophy with the sundivers, pretty much what you're supposed to do. However, you could add even longer prongs on your shields to make them even tighter. It's hard to accidentally scorch yourself unless you're being reckless inside of the sun and I've made designs with unbelievably thin shields (I have in fact created a sub 100K sundiver design that runs off of a singular medium reactor and a singular large shield, but it has a very thin shield coverage profile) that are still managing to do their job just fine. With that on top of the proper crew and positioning management you already have you can forget about fearing about shields ever going down no matter how deep you go. Oh also, I was slightly disappointed that you didn't actually touch the corona in here *11:11**,* because what happens is your ship immediately disintegrates and it's really funny to watch. Once you actually touch the sun's surface it starts dealing an ungodly amount of damage and it's overall a literal blast. *1:07:44* The part where you instantly killed Nutcracker broke my heart, that ship is normally an extremely fun and challenging encounter but rails completely break it T~T

@rakaydosdraj8405 Жыл бұрын
My sundiver designs are smallshield based diagonals. It needs a large reactor, but DOESNT need diamonds that large shields need, letting you build them earlier in your carear. Smallshields with a large reactor take 2 crew to saturate, but can be placed behind armor, allowing you to be significantly more greedy.

One major improvement to Francis's railgun ship design that I can think of would be to move his thrusters at the front of his ship further backwards, more towards the middle of the ship, so that he could then have enough space to protect them, along with the rest of his ship, with even more shielding and/or armor at the front of the ship. (The same could also be done with the thrusters at the rear of his ship, but that seems less important.) Actually, perhaps Francis could design a module full of engines, plus a single reactor and as much crew as needed to support all these engines, that could be saved and installed onto his ships as needed?

Loving the power of your rails, it's the kind of ship I tend to go for. The only issues that you have though are your lack of manoeuvrability (That's why you couldn't hit the Pirate Hunter flying past you) and lack of defence. It would be very much worth your while to add a couple of smaller thrusters for turning, and you really do need some point defence for the missiles that get sent your way. A couple of emp missiles and your ship would be in serious trouble. And you can see what happens when enemies get close range, that is when your ship will suffer. They are going to be increasing their speed, firepower and defences rapidly as you increase difficulty, and that means that long range rails alone won''t be enough to win every time.

interesting tidbit that occurred to me while watching this video: The bit about. the hyper-jump gate not being shiny. There was a short with a few videos on some of the questions you'd get asked when applying to (I think it was) NASA. One of the questions was about if you saw a Asteroid heading to earth, what would you do to slow or stop it? The options all seemed reasonable, but the cool part was the correct answer - Paint the front of it white. Even light reflecting off the asteroid would slowly change the direction, and inertia of it. It made me think: If the hyper-jump gate was shiny, it would require more effort to keep it in a relatively fixed location, than if it absorbed the light instead. I know it's more 'game-dev' or 'in-game' logic, but sometimes games unintentionally mirror real life without trying - or at least that's the way it seems.

Hearing you say "We don't need Strafe Thrust" hurt me a little bit inside. Strafing in any ship allows for extremely useful manoeuvres when rotating around enemies if you can manage to force a weakness, and being able to strafe also lets you hide in behind asteroids and pop out to shoot before moving back into cover during fights. Sure it doesn't always help in some long range stuff like this, but it can be extremely powerful in a lot of scenarios

With how fast the railguns take out ships, I'm surprised FJ hasn't tried anything to make clearing out a bunch of pirates less manual. Especially after optimizing the railguns for a high fire rate that can't be acchieved while fanning. First thought I had was to come in at an angle where multiple ships are lined up. Turn on the continuous fire he used for testing. And see how long it takes to destroy the second ship by indescriminately firing through the first. Second thought I had was to try turning on fire at will so the railguns fire even without a perfect target. Then use shift to queue attack commands on multiple ships, without targeting specific systems, and see whether the ship is so OP that it can clear out multiple enemies automatically without even being given a weak point as a target.

It looks like your weapons target a specific point. And they won't fire unless they have a target solution; in other words, until they know they have the hit on their target. But because the rail guns are all fixed, all but one of them thinks it is going to miss the target, so they don't fire. This, I suspect, is why you have to "wiggle", because as the ship wiggles, all of your guns pass the target and gain their target solution.

@FrancisJohnYT Жыл бұрын
For railgun reload you don't always need them going at full speed, but sometimes it's entirely necessary so you can break the enemy shields before they recharge. To quote the old adage, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
@DaFreak860
@DaFreak860 Жыл бұрын
Now that you have reached this point into the game, I think it's about time for you to learn about spinners, spinners fix the two major problems fanning has, reloading time and downtime. The last railgun to fire after fanning is the 1st railgun that fires in the next swing, and the 1st railgun to fire is the last railgun to fire in the next swing as well, resulting in times where your railgun is not firing due to being unloaded, and some railguns being loaded for a while and not firing due to line-of-sight. Spinners fix this by having railguns fire as they are loaded, causing no downtime and no railgun being unloaded when it is their turn to fire, the spinner achieves that by completing a rotation on one point in the time it takes for you to reload a railgun, so that a gun fires, reloads and fires again immediately after completing a rotation due to it having acquired line-of-sight once loaded and having been given time to reload. You can tune the speed your ship rotates by adding thrusters, and mass to the ship to counter thrusters, or by hasteing or slowing down reload-speed of your railgun and simply adding more total railguns to get the target DPS, as the design is expandable without making downtime worse, unlike with the fanning designs. Sidenote, you may want a point defence and/or EMP-missile focused companion-ship for your main ship, since you are currently vulnerable to railguns and nukes.

@@FrancisJohnYT - Startide Rising and The Uplift War are both really good books. Real classics, practically must-reads for anyone who likes SF. I'd avoid later books in the series, though. Brightness Reef / Infinity's Shore / Heaven's Reach are kind of dull, to be honest.

Wouldn’t it be safer and easier if you just pulled the asteroids out with the tractor beam? You’d be able to haul out the entire asteroid and take all of its resources without having to care about space because of cargo ships. I’m pretty sure it would be cheaper too, you would only need to care about thrust, shields and the tractor beam instead of the mining lasers and cargo space

This was what he did originally. The physics of pulling things using the tractor beams were really flaky and slow. Faster to just pull up, strip mine the asteroid then fly back out.
@FrancisJohnYT

Tried the tractor beam approach but XXL asteroids require two tractor beams and lots of engines. Also tractor beams put torque on the ship which can be messy. In the end I found mining on site easier and faster. Pulling out the asteroids was really slow.

The grey text under enemy ships is the related mission, so "Pirate Hunter" is what the mission is called not what the unit is called. I've seen many content creators call the pirates with those labels Pirate Hunters, so it's clearly a confusing design decision.

No idea if flak stopping railguns is new, but it sure does take the teeth out of you attacks unless you bring some extra rails.

On the topic of sun divers. Something that's more fun than practical is strapping enough tractor beams to the ship and just dragging the whole damn asteroid out of the suns danger zone and harvesting it there.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT Жыл бұрын
I tried that but found it more time consuming. The bigger roids are really slow to extract. Mining on site just went faster for me.

I wish they would have an energy conduit system (like piping fluids in games like factorio) instead of having people physically walking canisters of energy from the reactor to the shields or engines for example. That one element seems strangely out of place, but I understand it's a function of crew management. Just....strange. Edit: or the wiring system they have in Oxygen Not Included.

Think of the crew in cosmoteer as hauling coal and gunpowder to the engines and guns. Like steam powered war ships in space, or the green blobs of power equivalent.
@willbordy

Francis, Love this design and I don't think there is going to have a lot of things that can kill your ship, why? Because normally the biggest ships in the game cost around 2m and that is the price of your ship, you must be fighting ships that cost around 9k with a ship twice as expensive.
@hquest
@hquest Жыл бұрын
You could had stretched the ship instead of widening it. Then, you would put your thrusters in a line, to better utilize that emptiness, while saving on shields and being less surface area for enemies to target you. And why aren’t you using capacitors yet?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT Жыл бұрын
I don't see the point of capacitors in Cosmoteer just yet. While they are cheaper and less explosive than a small reactor they do the exact same thing. Except for the part where you have to fill them with power from another reactor.
