My father recently told me that his favorite Trek captain was Janeway. I was kind of surprised at first but now that I've rewatched some episodes of Voyager I can understand his viewpoint. Despite the horrible circumstances she and her crew find themselves in, Janeway radiates strength, confidence and authority. Kate Mulgrew really played this role to the hilt and made Captain Janeway into a powerful and compelling character without being too self-righteous or overbearing. She cares about her crew and always gets the job done, even if she sometimes has to resort to some questionable means in order to do it.

Janeway has been my favorite captain since I was a kid. Socially speaking, things were so much better back then. If this show were made today, it would revolve entirely around Janeway being a feminist role model. There was never any feminist agenda in Voyager. She was a great captain. There was never any discussion about her gender.

@@leonardo899 If Voyager was made today, the losers would scream "forced diversity" the moment they saw it announced. Voyager's production era is the same era as Deep Space 9 skewering misogyny by portraying the absurd Ferengi culture that has women chewing food for men and has Quark's mother demonstrate she's 100x the businessman he is, despite the ferengi rules that women aren't allowed to conduct business. It isn't subtle. Star Trek has always been blatantly political in its messages on star fleet being a society based on equality and expressing the issues of bigotry through portrayals in other civilizations they encounter. They portray a future that should exist and contrast it to the past or to other alien civilizations to comment on the modern world. Janeway is treated equally by fellow star fleet officers because that is how she should be treated,. That is the statement they're making. Janeway has already been called a feminist role model many times over the decades, and attacked for being one just as often.

Janeway was an excellent captain, and has as much skill and gravitas as Picard or Sisko. Given the era of television at the time, it wasn't possible in what was seen as "precinct" television for huge character exploration and evolution, that was where Voyager didn't get to live up to its huge potential. Nevertheless Voyager and her crew had some shining moments of development after its initial seasons. It would have been good to see Voyager steadily wrecked as a ship over its journey with occasional repairs and patches, integrated with bits and bobs of other technologies to hold it together.

Janeway upon return home was elevated to the Rank of Admiral. This (headcanon) came after Mark Johnson her once fiance reunited, but revealed he'd had a daughter with his new wife. They kept up the friendship, but became strained as the "hero" Janeway recounted tales of Voyager and Starfleet to the child, angering her mother. "Aunt Kathy" stopped calling. Marc's Daughter Katheryn Johnson is now a Starfleet graduate. Marc died and Janeway didn't attend the funeral. Now retired Janeway gets an unexpected guest. Janeway lives in Indiana with two dogs, Amelia and Sally Ride. She enjoys decaff coffee (under doctors orders) and secretly using her prestige to keep up to date on Starfleet matters. Like reading a newspaper, an old custom, she likes to excuse it. When young Katheryn arrives to tell her she's been selected for a mission, Janeway knows all about it. Tuvok in fact was her tutor, but Janeway hasn't heard from him in a while. Her "Niece" shifts awkwardly. "Tuvok? Oh he's um. Well. He's supportive. Cagey, he's got a dry sense of humor. He's... " "He's Tuvok?" They both say together. They laugh. "We are going to the Delta Quadrant". There's silence and Janeway places her mug down. "I'd heard." "Figured you had. But I thought I'd tell you in person." "I'd heard of the project. It's a big undertaking" "It is, but as you always said, it's worth the risk. Exploration" "Does your mother approve?" Young Katheryn shifts her gaze. "I don't need her approval. Besides. You taught me all I need to know." " ... I didn't come to Mark's funeral... No. Let me finish. I didn't come, your mother objected yes, but.. She had reason. I got stranded on the other side of the Galaxy. I got people killed. I left your father for my career. I don't want you to. Well" Young Katheryn smiles. "I know." Janeway smiles and the two have a few hours before the shuttle arrives. As they leave they hug. "Katheryn." The words seem strange in Janeway's mouth. "Kathy. Just remember. Don't let them bully you. Don't let them shout you down. They're your crew. Look after them. They'll look after you. You're a family. Ok?"

Whenever I’m asked that pivotal question in a relationship, “Kirk or Picard?”, my answer is always the same… Janeway!

You gotta love “scientific method” and “year of hell”. Just as much “don’t fuck with me” as any other Captain.

Being forgiving even against an enemy give you a moral high ground. It's like the Sith. Once you start down the path, you can't hardly ever escape.

Another one. When Janeway starts to whisper to Seven of Nine, we are supposed to listen carefully but usually it's time to turn the channel. Yes, I love Voyager; great Star Trek show.

If captain Janeway and Pike ever meet in Strange new worlds... whatever evil threat they meet may have to re-consider their understanding of humanity.

For incidental music, they should have used the TOS music used when trying to evade the cube in "The Corbomite Maneuver".
