That's what I call "PROFESSIONAL" operator. Damn fine work ethic and skill. I love seeing that in the tradesman field's. My uncle is a rancher but he is also a great equipment operator. He taught me to do everything in the mindset of being very aware of what your doing and do it well. And to take care of your equipment while operating and the maintenance. And to this day I am what you would call slightly OCD about that stuff lol but I am thankful for it because in the end my vehicles etc. last and are in good shape. My work is always good and it is done in a way to stand the test of time. Don't cut corners or do stuff half assed. Thank you for showing that in your videos.

When it comes to setup time, my dad loved to say that there was always time to do it right the second time around, so take your time and do it right the first time. I wish all operators took their time to dig such nice neat holes. My company was putting in a private fiber network for a country club and the excavation crew that got brought in to put trenches in for us wasn't nearly as neat & careful as you were and it probably added an extra 2-3 days to the whole darn project because of it.

A good layout guy helps a lot too. I was never around someone digging footings a lot but its a lot like anything else in construction you can sure see the good from the bad. I was always around utilities digging and the majority was repair where we didn't care if the ditch looked good it was mostly not wanting the Cowboys tearing a 2 thousand pair phone line out trying to fix a 3/4 in water line. We mostly fixed water, sewer and gas. You can sure see the quality in your work.

Excellent info! Thanks More videos on repositioning a backhoe efficiently would be good too. You gave one about positioning over a ditch before which was helpful for me. I have a little Kubota that I use as basically a handyman with a tractor. I was working on a job a few days ago, a small yard maybe 30x30 and I had to dig a perimeter around it but only 4 feet wide so I couldn’t be digging it dead on, I had to be setup 90 degrees to it. Anyway it was a huge pain due to reposting and space to dump. In hindsight maybe I should have setup parallel to it to give for dump space and I did tell the owner upfront a miniex would be quicker. Anyway don’t need a reply but again repositioning info would be great 👍

This gentleman is very good second generation I could hear and see he had the motor revved down.Thanks great tutorial
@Digginok5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Smooth bucket is great working around lines, but for clean top edges nothing beats some sharp teeth set wider than the bucket. I know 360 is good in some cases, but not when you are digging a long footing, most efficient to set spoils to the side. I don’t dislike mini x, but the backhoe is easer for me to make nice clean footings. I don’t run the machine wide open, no need to most of the time.

@Digginok4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Once you get a good kink in your neck you will enjoy the backhoe life. Key to footings is sharp teeth, put new outers on if you got them. Don’t get greedy, most of the first few inches you won’t have a full bucket. Consistent and attention to detail make all the difference, if something looks a bit out of line, straighten it up before moving forward. Thanks for watching
@RiverValleyAcres4 жыл бұрын
@@Digginok thank you for the awesome tips. I appreciate it. I’m use to digging pipeline ditch. I dig from the outside of my tracks and pull into the middle then dig the middle out. It slopes my ditch line into a v ditch. I’m in between jobs and doing some work to stay busy. I dug a basement out a few weeks ago and I got carried away and over dug it a bit. Poor soil(sand&gravel) and poor set up on my part doesn’t make for a pretty hole lol.
@Digginok4 жыл бұрын
For foundation work I find it’s always best to establish the outside line down to grade, then do the slope or bench last, that way the layout is not lost, footing work is a bit different for sure. I know it seems to be a waste of time, but less is more when cutting footings. Concrete is expensive, and a bit more time getting the dig right is appreciated by the guys that have to buy it. Some days I can save 5-10 cubic yards of concrete by spending maybe an hour extra. Haven’t had anyone throw rocks at me yet.

"We" mainly do minor digging (water valve replacement, water main breaks) and our supervisor wants more of us to know how to operate the backhoe. Any tips or ways to practice, before actually doing the real work? I can take as much time to learn/practice as I need. Maybe make a video on basic digging techniques and how to practice offsite (?)
@Digginok4 жыл бұрын
As for things to practice, try to dig level, fill the bucket in a long stroke and don’t take too big of a bite. If possible set the machine at a slight angle to allow a better view of the ditch, keep the machine tires on the ground slightly and keep it level. Low throttle at first and as you build confidence add speed. If you master the backhoe there is not much you will have trouble operating.
@eeschguy24 жыл бұрын
@@Digginok thanks for the reply. Should the teeth be straight down or "out" straight, when extending to dig and first touching the ground? (or doesn't really matter?)

Brian Schmid if you are not concerned about the top crust breaking it don’t matter. If I’m afraid of snagging a pipe or utility line I will lay the teeth back or away from the hoe so it will bounce over.

What's the best technique to dig when you get to the required elevation to keep excavated surface leveled? I dip very often when digging for footings.
@Digginok3 жыл бұрын
It’s a lot of practice, I still make a dip now and then. Generally the backhoe makes a natural slope up as you pull back. Try to look at the side of the bottom of the ditch, you can see the straight line at that point. The more you do it the easier you can “see” the grade.

It adds interest knowing what area you operate in so we can look up the weather forecast. I mention this because of how wrapped up your man with the laser stick was. I expected to find it was close to freezing, but Google tells me it is 85° (24° in real money) in the Mulhal ok area, so your man must really fell the cold. I've heard you give tips on digging neat footings before, but this was more comprehensive, and interesting as all heck. I almost feel that I could get on a backhoe and have half a chance of digging a half tidy ditch, which is completely ridiculous, but testifies to your skills as a teacher. With apologies for putting you on the spot, is it fair to say you are highly respected at what you do? By the guys with the hard hats I mean. We've seen a few different people checking grade for you, and they all seem to have complete confidence in you. Today's grade checker was a bit stingy with his feedback. It looked like a quarter inch movement of a finger tip was supposed to give you a picture of the bottom of that blind hole.

Am I seeing that correctly at the end... you back up to your box and then pull yourself over the box and putting your stabilizers down to straddle the box? I’ve only ever dug regular trenches nothing like this.

Billy Shrubb yes that’s what I’m doing. It doesn’t work with some soils as it won’t take the weight of the machine. The other option would be to dig the small footing then switch buckets for the large boxes then switch back. This way I only switch buckets once.

Digginok yeah I was thinking that could get a little hairy with some soils. Thanks for the reply!

Using or attaching a wireless camera on top or on the side of the hole with a cell phone inside the cabin looking live inside the hole might help.

That's a lot of good advice. That one foot bucket is still driving me nuts and I'm sure it ain't do it anymore for your sanity

Thanks Tim! If I didn’t have it bucket I wouldn’t be doing this job

@@Digginok what I meant is you dig better then that bucket does. I'm glad that you found a spot dry enough to be able to dig in.

You say what Ron Pratt at Midwest Truck says about wrecker operation "small slow increments " is safer for him and more accurate for you. Thanks.

Dirtman707 a 2007 New Holland B95 if possible, if I buy brand new it would probably be a toss up between case and Deere, I get sick to my stomach thinking of either, 😂
