I recommend you Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Spanish author, the Cemetery of forgotten books !!! It’s a 4 books series, has some historical elements, thriller, romance, and maybe even fantasy; The Shadow of the Wind is the first book.

genuine question: why don't you use the library for books your unsure of!!! coming from another broke book lover, the library is my best friend hahaha these books are very interesting though! I read half of cmbyn when I was 16 and loved the writing but felt a bit off put by some parts of it, so maybe I'll try that author again :)

I have always had this weird obsession with owning my media. I even used to work at a library for 4 years during high school so I was constantly checking out a myriad of books and then reading them all. I genuinely don't know why I stopped doing it though...I really should start it again

I teach HS English too. I can’t wait for break so I can book binge. Strangely enough, this video actually makes me want to pick up the secret history. I feel like everyone I know who has read it either loved it or hated it. If it’s at the library I’ll pick it up, since I don’t know which side of the fence I’ll land on.

Yeah Find Me was so damn frustrating. I didn't think the opening story with his dad was THAT bad but it takes a lot of the age gap criticisms from CMBYN and realllllyy runs it

I recommend Matrix by Lauren Groff- absolutely poetic & lyrical writing about monastic life, women and their relationships with each other and the land. i wanted to reread it immediately simply to be able to devour the language again.

I think you should review The Bluest Eyes, it's one of my favorite books, it has stayed with me for months and unfortunately I don't see any discussion about it on youtube. It was also a very fun, yet heartbreaking, book to read.

I think you would love White Noise by Don DeLillo. It has an exciting plot but asks some fascinating questions about language, media, and the television being a member of every family household. Highly recommend it. Oh, and Noah Baumbach is adapting it into a film with Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig in the two lead roles!

Tyler this is possibly your best video ever 😂 the secret history should have remained a secret. I don't find her writing compelling and I felt alone in this opinion. I appreciate the validation. I've had Lucky Jim dancing in and out of my cart on NYRB for months. So I'm finally going to splurge and get it and while I'm at it I'll get the other two because they sound amazing!! Thanks for the recs. As for a kid saying "you remind me of salt" I likely would have taken it as a compliment. I'm an artist now but I used to be a chef. I would have replied with something like "So I give your life flavor? nice😜" or"I bring the flavor" because food tastes like crap without any salt and so do good conversations. We all need flavor in the mix!

ur so funny 😭 also, same. i unexpectedly fell head over heels in love with cmbyn, and for the life of me LOATHED find me. i havent read enigma variations, but i'd recommend "out of egypt" to you. that book is so, astoundingly good, that it almost rivaled my love for cmbyn. it's a memoir of andre aciman's life, and sort of chronicled into a multigenerational family drama. and u can clearly see how his surroundings growing up influenced the writing of cmbyn later on. his family were sephardic jewish turkish citizens, who immigrated to alexandria, egypt before aciman was born. aciman's mother was deaf, and belonged to a middle class syrian/arab-jewish family. while his father belonged to a high-brow european-jewish family. weirdly while in egypt, all of them couldn't speak arabic, and instead kept to their own bubble + other europeans living in egypt at the time, and instead spoke french + a little bit of this rare fusion language called ladino. the book was so rich, beautifully adorned with fusions of world references of literature, culture, classical music. and it was as lyrically written as cmbyn. (and not at all cheesy and juvenile like "find me", blergh)

Since this is a literary channel here are two fantasy novels that have the most wonderful prose: Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle by Manda Scott and Daughter of the Empire by Janny Wurt & Raymond Feist…if you want to mix it up!

I watched Call Me By Your Name and felt it unremarkable (I will say I was inspired to watch it because of a French film called summer of 85). I read Tsushimas Territory of Light which was fun about a single mother raising a child in Japan.

Yo I just gotta say you don’t have to break bank on books-my enter collection (which is like a bookcase and a decent amount stacked up-total around 150 books) are all bought second hand at thrift stores like value village, good will, and local stores. Average price of books I buy are like 4$. For instance I have a beautiful copy of Arabian nights with gold accents and deckled edges that was $3.99- granted you’re not going to find new releases this way but the value village I live next to let’s you buy 4 books with the 5th book free so that’s like 16$ for 5 books and as a bonus people leave stuff in books. I’ve found money people have used as book marks in there, old postcards, receipts, handwritten notes, and so much more really fun stuff. Used book stores are also pretty good because they are typically cheaper than new and have more books (but they usually run 10$+ on books which still decent price but I’ve been living that $4 a books life so it’s more of a special treat to me lol) I’d personally say only get new books if they’re new releases and everything else you can get used if you look and wait

man, I'm not sure if you're familiar with the makioka sisters by junichiro tanizaki but it's a classic japanese tale from the 1930's and it blew my mind. it has some big jane austen vibes, but in a more enticing way also, one of the best things I read last year was the house of spirits by isabel allende. this is not me roasting you (I'm not your student), but you should really read more latin american literature! and the house of spirits is a great place to start, it's a chilean classic that follows the story of a family through generations and through them we see the changes and tribulations of contemporary chile (think of pachinko in the andes). also, there's a lot of magic realism involved and god knows I live for this shit finally, don't sleep on my brilliant friend by elena ferrante. these books became popular for a very good reason. I was reading them while watching the HBO show last year and I got hardcore obsessed. the characters are some of the most real people you'll ever "meet" and the depiction of jealousy, bitterness and love on friendship hits too close to home on another note, keep up the great work, man! you're really hitting your stride these past few videos! if you have any books recommendation for me, please let me know (and I'll definietly buy it)

To be fair , now looking back I feel like I didn’t understand the things I do now in high school , even though I’m 19 now and high school was 2 years ago I had the mentality of “ whatever the school showed or recommend is boring “ even though the teachers were literally trying to show us examples and paths that I NOW wanna go on and now looking back I just think “ wow I really wasted my time and opportunity to learn by being a teenager “ , like one of my teachers would give a book analysis assignment I would find it boring but then I would watch all these literature and art analysis videos thinking to myself “ when am I gonna have that opportunity to show how I see things and why I find these stories interesting …” , the assignment is literally sitting right there lmao
