At first thought you were just laying in an empty tub, but then realized there was actually water- really committed to the bit there lol. Since you read Kafka on the Shore, I'd recommend reading some of Franz Kafka works if you haven't since the title is an ode to him. He's most known for the Metamorphosis, but he has other great works like "In the Penal Colony," "The Trial," and "The Judgement," and more fantastic realism type stories like "The Castle." Kafka is a very interesting character, so if you're interested in learning more about him, I'd recommend looking into some of the work from- and letters to-his longtime friend, Max Brod (who finished and published Kafka's works after his death despite Kafka's request not to).

Kafka is great! Also, if you want a transition period, read the last story of Men Without Women! It's a fanfic of The Metamorphosis.

I was saving this video for my morning coffee and it was HARD to resist the urge to just say fuck it and watch it last night, but here I am with a steaming cup in hand, grinning like a lunatic at everything you have to say about The Count Of Monte Cristo. Needless to say, it was worth the wait! I'm so psyched for you to check out The Three Musketeers because, well, it is my absolute favorite book of all time, but also because along with Monte Cristo it's among several classics which fundamentally shaped me as a reader. I've been coming back to them ever since reading them for the first time at the age of 13, and each time I find something new in them, something that escaped my attention the previous time, and that's why I LOVE rereading books. And not just books, but movies and TV shows (not to mention music) - there's limitless potential in the process of revisiting art. Rereading, rewatching, relistening, reexperiencing. You come back to the stuff you're already familiar with, but you yourself are not the same as before. Now you approach the subject with new eyes, different life experience, maybe your opinions have drastically changed over the course of time, which in turn makes you see this old friend, this old piece of art, in an entirely different light! I could ramble about the science of rereading for hours. I'm real passionate about it. Thanks for another insightful video! I sure had a blast trying to guess where you'd wind up next (I was wrong every time). Here's a random recommendation from someone who also likes this very niche subgenre of modern classics - if you haven't read One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey and you're wondering if it's as good as the movie, it's even better!

I recommend this book to LITERALLY EVERYONE because it's my favorite, but you should totally read The Latehomecomer. It's a memoir about a Hmong family and it combined folk lore and real stories of this family from nation to nation during a time of war, refugee, and immigration to the US. I read it twice in high school and then stole the copy I used cuz I literally MARKED IT TO SHIT. I think you'd absolutely LOVE it!!!

I read Naomi because of your video about marking up books, and saw the quote you marked. I think it's super interesting your take on it, and I agree completely with it. There were times where I was really annoyed with Jogi and his attempt towards Naomi, but Naomi is such a beautiful character. When she does get all the power, she becomes so manipulative, and it's amazing to read (albeit in a frustrating way). Idk if you've read East of Eden yet, but Naomi reminds me some of Cathy. Another woman who is a master manipulator.

It's so interesting how subjective the experience of reading is, I am currently halfway through Kafka on the Shore and it's making me never want to read a Murakami book again whereas you're talking about it in this video recommending it to people. (although I do wish I had seen this video before I started reading the book because your warning on how this book isn't the best to start with would have come in handy haha) I love books and listening to what other people think of them!

Interesting on your take about not to begin with 'Kafka on the Shore' as introduction of Murakami's works. My first introduction on the author was exactly that book, and as a reader who tends to read genre fiction and magical realistic stuffs, that novel was the perfect introduction for me and I immediately looveee his writing style. However, tbh I don't have any intention to read another Murakami's, especially 'Norwegian Wood' for being considered as the most 'realistic' book from him (I watched your old video about the discussion of that novel), but I plan to re-read 'Kafka on the Shore' (currently re-read it actually and heavily annotate it, I really love his prose that much!), and will multiple re-read it in my life lol if I want to visit the surrealistic absurd vibe from his magical world. Oh, at least I plan to read the '1Q84' trilogy as my next Murakami.

Recommendations from me if you're interested: When we cease to understand the world by Benjamín Labatut - a book of short stories that follow the lives of some the most famous scientists and mathematicians that have ever lived, and speculates about how they as people functioned (or didn't in a lot of cases) whilst they made some of the most important discoveries in history. I really enjoyed this unique blend of fact and fiction and I think you might too. Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood - Again, another collection of short stories, set in Berlin during the early 30s, it follows the everyday life of the narrator (who is a heightened version of Isherwood himself) and the relationships he forms with the people around him. I loved the way that in the beginning there are only a small handful of references to the political situation and as the book continues, they become harder and harder to avoid before it eventually becomes almost consumed by it. I discovered Isherwood this year and after reading just 2 of his books, I feel like he's already becoming one of my favourite authors.

Hey! Awesome video, Tyler. I want to comment on the Kafka On The Shore part. It's been my first Murakami book (followed by the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Bind Willow Sleeping Woman; I am a big (book) boy haha) and it immediately got me into his stuff. I just re-read it this summer and thought about it more, took more time than just reading all of it in few big chunks. This book is good for starting with Murakami, if you are not afraid of big books and can just accept weird stuff. I loved Oshima in this book and how he has thesw wonderful discussions about people and literature with Kafka. I remember the hollow men thing from George Elliot (?) vividly. Nakata is a very, very sweet old man that in discussions about this book is often underrepresented. He lives a simple life, but still is important and happy. Although mentally disabled he manages to impact Hoshino's life, who could be described as a hollow man from time to time - But he changes. There are many more aspects that are well done and that can be a pathway into Murakami because one can recognize many themes in others of his books. I think Kafka On The Shore is Murakamis comment on how to live life and, essentially, how to be a man - and that there are many ways to be a man. Also, this book reminded me of a friend who, for a time, actually lived in a 24/7 library due to a crazy flatmate. PS I always appreciate the "well, well, well" jokes. Well done, like in the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

I would love you to read The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson is basically considered the American Tolkien and already is called a legend in the High Epic Fantasy genre. Now the first book in the Stormlight Archive series is The Way of Kings and I think the audiobook experience is much better than the physical book experience because the book is 1001 pages long. But I think it's worth the time. Think about it

not sure if you know about it but there is actually a manga that is about classic literature authors called bungou stray dogs! the characters are all based on real life authors including junichiro tanizaki who wrote naomi and it is incredibly interesting to see the parallels of the author's life, their works and reputation be represented in the manga. the best part for people who aren't even that familiar with eastern authors is the fact that ameican authors such as poe and fitzgerald also appear! i would recommend to read it, it's great and brought me back into reading more classics as i was so invested into the characters of the manga!

@@ahhhhyes Seems your right. Im not used to people finding the manga better than the anime due to anime helping you to showcase music and dialogue acting and movement but yeah sometimes the manga is just better. The score online for the manga vs show is so large of a gap wow. I always hear about this show due to the strange name. Kinda catchy. Im not super into anime I'm more mainstream and so I just know the popular stuff but I respect the genre...just like all media its a nice platform for expression. Lately they have been more creative than movies and tv...maybe due to budget constraints in live action but yeah.
