Being from NJ (well 60 years ago) this is very popular there, as well in much of CT/PA/NY & obviously now in Florida. You really need to do it with a fried egg & cheese. You can find it in many other parts of the country. Just check any deli that carries "Boars Head" products.

I have never seen anyone put mustard on taylor ham. Traditionally, it is eaten on a round roll or bagel, with cheese and a fried egg (sometimes I get it without the egg). Condiments for this are salt pepper and ketchup ( I dont do the ketchup, so just pepper for me, unless there is an egg)

@@someguywhocooks8575 It's basically a regional bacon substitute (similar to Canadian Bacon). People within the northern half of the state (where I'm from) call it "Taylor Ham", and people in the southern half of NJ call it "Pork Roll". Taylor Ham is technically a brand of pork roll. There are other producers of pork roll within the state such as "Trenton Pork Roll", and "Case Pork Roll". As someone put it "All Taylor ham is pork roll, but not all pork roll is Taylor Ham". I most certainly have tried it... but I'd be remiss if I didn't say doing it with mustard is fantastic. I didn't just try that in a whim, I did so in the footsteps of jersey native and restauranteur Brad Leone. At his north jersey restaurant he serves it on an everything bagel with mustard. Gotta say... it's worth trying it that way

everyone-look for a few videos here about Taylor Ham, or Pork Roll. Quite the history here in Jersey. I like mine on a nice bagel, toasted or not, egg, little butter! mustard if no egg, rye, hard roll, white bread, oh heck! BREAD, NO BREAD! On a plate, with eggs, as you like them, bacon, hashbrowns, T-Ham, buttered toast, It's all good!

Potato potato, dude. I was introduced to it as taylor ham. The variation in name doesn’t change the taste haha. And I’m obviously not from NJ, so I didn’t know much other than the stuff exists. I have, however, now been told many times over, and will be enjoying it with a fried egg and cheese next time. In the meantime, I thoroughly enjoyed what I did have. The beauty of food is that it can be enjoyed many ways, and it seems on its own with mustard was also really good.

I'm weighing in from Trenton here. Pork roll (Taylor Ham in North Jersey) is pretty much a staple. Before the pandemic closed stuff down, we had pork festivals in Trenton. It's so ubiquitous here, we take it for granted. Mustard? I never thought about it, but.... yeah. I can see it. I have to try it now (there's always some in my freezer). The most classic way it's served here though is with egg and American cheese on a kaiser roll or bagel. It's one of the best breakfast sandwiches you can have!

No one from Jersey, actually pronounces it as “JOISEY”. As far as the meat itself it’s pretty straightforward. T ham and Cheese on a bagel or roll. Or t ham egg and cheese on a bagel or roll. If ur from Essex county or anywhere close to Newark/NYC, you will be saying Taylor Ham. Closer to philly or the sticks, then pork roll.

As someone who’s not from the area that grew up with the stuff, I definitely didn’t know the “proper” way to have it. That being said, I absolutely look forward to trying it that way in a future episode! And mayonnaise on pizza... sounds gross, but I may have to find a way to make it work ;-). The great thing about cooking is that there’s no one correct way to enjoy something. Some people like ketchup on their hotdogs... others like mustard. Some people like cilantro on their tacos, others don’t. As someone who was never introduced to taylor ham / pork roll until, quite literally, this episode, I tasted it and it reminded me very much of a good salami, and if you’ve never had a hot salami and mustard sandwich... oh boy is it good. I urge you to give it a shot :).

Lol oh man!! Buddy in Jersey nobody eats a plain taylor ham sandwich. We eat a taylor ham egg and cheese on a hard roll (unique to NJ/NYC) or a bagel. Typically people like it plain or with salt, pepper, ketchup.

Brad Leone…. Jersey native and restauranteur. An episode he did on “Prime Time” was the first place I heard of the stuff… in his restaurant he serves it on a bagel with mustard and that’s it :). I didn’t have a bagel on hand in this episode, but I had bread and mustard. In a more recent episode, I did have it the “proper” way. I think both ways have merit :)

I’ve fielded so many comments like this one haha… in terms of three slices, since making this video I have seen SO many others from NJ native restaurant owners who make it with a wide variety of versions, all based around the same recipe with slight variations. One interesting thing I’ve seen is a difference in slice quantity and size! Some have one slice, others I’ve seen as many as five. Similarly, some have had it sliced as thin as salami while others have had it as thick as a thick ham steak! The ones in the package I got were about as thick as thick salami. My introduction to this was actually a video by NJ native and restaurant owner Brad Leone of Bon Apetít, in which he describes the sandwich at his restaurant as having and everything bagel, Taylor ham and mustard. He does say it’s his preferred and what’s on his restaurant’s menu, so I didn’t really know any different at the time and, to be honest…. Doing it like this makes for an amazing sandwich. That being said, I have since also made it “properly,” and it’s also very good. I suggest you give it a shot some time :). Like me with well done steak…. I prefer medium rare, but I was willing to try well done, so I did. Still prefer medium rare, but with an open mind, you never know what you’ll find. Sometimes, a new favorite!

In a later episode! Please keep in mind that this was my first ever exposure to the stuff past seeing Jersey native and restauranteur Brad Leone on an episode of It’s Alive. Brad used an everything bagel, as other claimed jersey natives have mentioned using on this post as well! I think the biggest thing to keep in mind is having an open mind… not everybody has Kaiser rolls available to them (sounds weird, but it’s true!), and what I had on hand was what I used that day when I finally got to try taylor ham or pork roll or whatever you wanna call it… and… well it worked just fine and it was dang tasty :)

Luckily, like any other food, it’s very versatile ;-). In a later episode I had it the more proper way and turned it into a breakfast burger!

Please never make it like this again. Proper order is Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese on a Roll, with Salt, Pepper and Ketchup. Also keep in mind having it made on a grill that's been covered in grease, from all of the other meals prepared on it, all adds as part of the flavor full experience. You must take a trip to Jersey and experience it the right way to understand. Also.. please never use mustard or sliced bread. 🙏
