It would of been a "powerful" statement if Keith was living in his own apartment but he sounds more entitled and privileged when you're complaining while living rent free under mom and dads roof. But I still give Keith credit because was actually trying to pay for his own college unlike todays woke idiots who think they deserve school loans they shouldn't have to pay back 😂 LOL

@@bifftannen2062 great point, hey remember in Friday Night Lights when he says "I don't want your life"?..very similar to that, it's powerful though in terms of when you're a teenager everything feels life or death, you don't get into a college or your GF breaks up with you and it's soul-crushing..for example, John Hughes knew that and used it well in his films, once you graduate then no one cares but while in school you're still this bundle of promise and possibility that scene is a necessary fight we all have..I mean it's part of the human and animal experience, the bird flies out the nest or the lion is kicked out to start his own pride, he stands up to his father for his right to self-govern, haha he's now found his individuality, a parents fear is the loneliness of an empty house once a child leaves and a child not being able to survive once they leave..as well as the child never coming back to visit once they leave, so I also feel for the father facing that situation, I think they should make a high school teen drama or whatever it's called FROM the parent's perspective

Even though I loved all of John Hughes' movies back in the 80's, this one has always held the #1 place in my heart; it stood the test of time beautifully, too. I have a crush on dreamy Eric Stoltz to this day, Mary Stuart Masterson ROCKED the tomboy role, Lea Thompson's character wasn't just a cliché and it's so much fun to hate preppy Craig Sheffer. Also, whenever I see Elias Koteas on Chicago PD, I always remember I first saw him in this film. The ending is perfect. And that soundtrack!!! I wish this movie got more love and recognition; it's high time it did!

Wow, you mentioned exactly the same things I have also most appreciated about this movie. Woefully overlooked, but I get the impression it is wonderfully loved by those of us who discovered it to be so much more than we had expected. And I still regularly play my copy of that wonderful soundtrack!. But just one exception, my crush was on Mary Stuart Masterson :)

I’m 49yo male here in 2021 and in 1987 I had the biggest crush on Mary Stuart Masterson. I thought the acting was amazing, great story, brilliant directing and oh, that soundtrack!!! I was 15 in ‘87 and this film gave me hope that one day I too would find my soulmate. It took me another 10 years, and I married her but hey, I found her… ‘The minute you stop believing there’s someone out there for you, it’s over…isn’t it?’

This is a great movie. When it came out in 1987, I saw it in the movie theater 6 times in a row the same day. There was something very 80's punk about it. The movie is about love. You can feel the love between Watts and Keith. It is real. Perhaps because the movie is set in California whereas the other John Hughes teen comedies are set in Illinois, the movie felt different. Also the actors were new. It therefore did not qualify as a classic John Hughs teen comedy. No Molly Ringwalt crew. All counters were back to zero. This said, it was this working class ambience which made the movie interesting. The cinematography was great. Some moments in the movie were too silent and lacked art direction... but despite any shotcomings the movie works on its own level and the emotions are there. It is a standalone work of art. I believe this is John Hughe's most original movie... and perhaps his most mature work. The lesson the movie teaches us is that any place is beautiful when you're un love.

John Hughes was known for filming hours of footage then cutting it down to a 90 minute film. He did it with The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Sixteen Candles. I wish someday the deleted scenes of this movie would be released because there was plenty of stuff in the script that did not make it into the film.
