Nick, this is truly full circle for me! I fell in love with the idea of owning a 911 from watching your 991 videos last year. You made quite a case for it being the everyday sports car that one can live with year round. In January of this year I bought a low mileage 996.2. I took forever finding mine as I had to have one spec'd with a rear wiper (which I picked up from you)! In the last 12 months I've put 15k miles on it and driven it hard year round in snow, rain, etc. After owning a slew of other European cars for 20 years I am now a 911 convert for life. Thank you for turning me on to the ultimate sports car! -Dylan

I have a 996 turbo. The turbo never had the IMS bearing problem as it has a totally different engine that harks back to the GT1 with true dry sump. I had it remapped, new balanced headers and 100 race cats plus higher rated dump valves that hold higher boost. It runs 640 BNP and 580 pounds foot torque. It will beat a 991 if the 991 turbo is standard and the 996 turbo, if manual gearbox, is climbing in price very quickly. I bought mine in 2010 for 28K and sold it for £39k. I bought another from a guy not knowing of the price increase and am doing the same upgrades. Go for a turbo in manual and you"lol have a nice investment with the legendary mezger engine which can be tuned to silly figures. It's a superb car. DO change your oil often though. I am OCD with oil and change every 3K. The Porsche mechanics say a redline a day keeps mechanics at bay. The turbo actuators can break down if you don't open the taps often. Hey, you can read forums and be fed BS by ppl who have never owned on or buy one and feel very special each time you drive it. As for ease of maintenance then ask about changing the spark plugs lol.

Hakeem Mulholland I’m perfectly fine with it looking like every other 911 because I think the 911 shape is perfect as is. Looks... most people can´t tell the difference between a Toyota Corolla and a Prius and yet claim they hate the "fried egg" headlights. Haters say that they dislike the 996 because it´s the first 911 with a water-cooled engine and they say they love the 993 because it has the beloved air-cooled engine, and then again they don´t even know what the difference is, they just talk. But it´s the numbers that talk about how popular that 996 was that show how owners didn´t give a shit about any of those "shortcomings" it outsold the 993 and actually became the most popular 911 ever (partly because of the haters as well). It´s the 911 everyone like to say shit about, without knowing shit about it!!!

That's the actual gem in the range - the purity of 2WD, less weight, better steering with no driveshafts to the front wheels (the 4s are good steerers, but the C2 is sublime) - in the dry around the track I'd put money on a C2 over a C4 or C4S. And in the wet the C2 driver would be grinning from ear to ear while the 4s drive ahead in dull boredom! I don't give a rats about the stopwatch - give me grins any day :) :)

I've always found that it's easier to appreciate the 996 if you think of it as its own car, separate from the other 911s. In its own right it's a fantastic car, it just is out of place compared to the 993 and 997. People dislike it because it's too different from the other 911s in style. After 2005 - 2006 Porsche stayed with the single row but beefed it up significantly and this bearing has had the least problems of all three types of bearings used from 1997 to 2008. The upgraded bearing in the 997 and 987 is unserviceable, meaning you can't reach it unless you strip the entire engine down. From my research the IMS issue has been greatly exaggerated, mainly due to a cottage industry that produces and installs IMS Bearing replacements, so naturally it's in their interest to scare all 996, 986, 997 and 987 owners into thinking all their engines will suffer IMS failure.

Another one here that loves the 996 styling. The 996.2 regular Carrera is a truly beautiful car, even the headlights. Also, there's something I'd like to point out that people tend to forget: besides the headlights, this generation also ditched the classic swept wrap-around tailights, and all the tailight designs in all the 911 generations since the 996 are clearly evolutions of that first departure from the classic styling.

2 things. The IMS bearing issue hit 8% of cars early. So a lot of people had it changed to prevent it. If you factor those in, the IMS issue would have hit more than 8% of 996. Perhaps 10-15% in the long run. Which is quite a bad number for a luxury brand that wants to be the engineer's car.

I have owned four 911's. One air cooled 993 , two 996's and a 997. I presently own a 996 C4s in arctic silver with 50k on the clock. Its immense. I think it is the best looking Porsche 911.. Period. The criticisms are tired and endlessly repeated. Say something new for goodness sake. Oh...The IMS! Internet hysteria gone mad. 8%. Ill take my chances. Avoid all problems by changing oil every 5k and hey, 92% are fine. :). Just wait and see the prices go steadily up. All cars have a mechanical grenade waiting to pounce. My C4s drives so well, so fast handles , still has the original nalogue DNA. My water cooled was a pain in the arse and bloody expensive to run. Get one they are fabulous. Nobody needs more than 300hp in the real world.

My old 996 c4s had nothing but trouble with aircon fail. The front air vents where the two condensors where wrongly located making it an easy stone catcher. Not sure if the 991s has retified it?! Other than that, it drove like on rails.

I've owned a 996 and own 996 turbo. This is an excellent review which covers all the main issues and assets associated with the 996. Oh, if you want a decent non-turbo 996 to drag race, don't go for the C4s, which weighs over 400lbs more than the c2.
@kenshirk69937 жыл бұрын
You are right. I have had this argument several times--the c2 offeres a different driving experience than the heavier turbos and all wheel drive units. at 2900# the c2's are little different.

They water cooled for the sole fact of not being able to pass emissions when engine was not up to temp, reliability was never an issue with a maintained air cooled if one does not count the 2.7 litre from early 70's'

This vid was made 4 years ago. I got my 996 C4S 6 years ago and it has not depreciated 1 dollar and I will sell it in a couple years for a nice profit.

The 996 didn't do bad at all, but you can clearly see the 991.2 easily walk away as the speed builds

(2-2019) Nick, just wanted to let you know that I think your "FUZZY Mic" is absolutely Kick Ass! Glad to see your channel is embracing the latest technology to enhance and enrich the overall viewing experience. (Just kidding, you seem like a Nice Guy, Like ME) I have a 11.15 second 1/4 mile 2001 C5 Heavily Modded Vette I bought NEW and has 36,000 miles. HATE to sell it as I put $25,000 into it over the years, NOTHING is stock (Heads/Cam) ALL Bolt Ons. Anyway I a FINALLY All of a SUDDEN want a Porche. I am sick of the Vette, even the new amazingly fast one. I am looking for a 2007-2009 911 Turbo with a manual. Also would MAYBE consider the 2003-2004 Turbo as some are very nice and FAST! And Cheaper! Also considering a Carera S, but think I'd want the additional power and regret not getting the turbo. Nice Car!

I love the 996 4s, especially in silver/silver combo. Has those classic looks, as a matter of fact I think this will become by first classic Porsche, as sadly 993 4s prices have become ridiculous. Would be a joy to see you review one thought Nick!

The 996.2 C4S is my favorite 996 if there was one. Could you grace us with a 997 Carrera GTS or 997.2 Carrera 4, Nick?

In my view this particular model the c4s is a gem of the 996 era: why? The looks of this particular model is amazing with the rear and the intakes and wheels, the mechanics and equipment are top notch as they are from the turbo and the engine sound (with a sport e or bypass) is unbeatable . I'm sure this model is a modern classic. Get a manual ...

I think it would be more accurate to say that the Boxster saved Porsche and the 911. The 996 came along for the ride (and the headlights)

It definitely wasn't just the 996 that saved Porsche. The Boxster as well as the Cayenne played a HUGE role in that as well.

I actually rather like the 996's looks, but mostly the facelift or "Turbo" headlights, and speaking of, the Turbos and GT3's never had the IMS bearing problem, from what i heard, the engine was some sort of development of 993 engines, so they are usually bullet proof compared to the others.... My favourite of these, still is the the "Turbo", and damn, those still hold their value well.... That being said, my favourite gen is the 993, and again, the "Turbo S" in this case, beautiful machines. Maybe because i was a kid and got the exposure to the car around the age i was starting to become more aware of the range, i liked that they evolved the looks of the car. For me, it was awesome to see such a change compared to the 993, i wasn't so fanatic of the previous looks. Still ain't, to be honest, but i understand why the "outrage" now a days. And lets be honest here, guys.... These over the first Panamera, and the first Cayenne, every freaking day!

Hugo Fernandes they look great. only Internet forum old school tards complain. meanwhile they love the 991 which has oval headlights,longer wheelbase and is a bigger change than the 996 ever was. old school tired hate
@normsallitt27537 жыл бұрын
Hugo Fernandes The 996 turbo (Mezger) engine was designed by Hans Mezger for Porsche's GT1 racing program in the 90's... & you were correct in saying it's basically bullet proof. I've owned over a half dozen Porsche's over the yrs, and can say without hesitation that the 996 Turbo is by far the best. The only changes made were a tune and exhaust from Fabspeed done in house, which I'd highly recommend. If you have the means, then do yourself a favor and purchase one. Even after 6 yrs of ownership, I still smile throughout every drive... it's Truly Amazing car that blends old & new in a perfect way!

Am I the only one who loves the 996 just because it was the Porsche that was new back when we weren't even tall enough to look at the interior from the outside?

It is a bit unfair to compare the 996.2 with a 991.2 because these 991 mark 2 cars have so much more torque that they will easily beat the 991.1 in a drag race ... and i am not even mentionning PDK versus manual! Other points, well maintained 996 cars don't squeak or rattle, mine don't. In a drag race my 40th anniversary is more or less as fast as a manual 997.2 and is really close to a 991.1. My 996.2 GT3 and GT2 beat them but that is expected. Although i do love the headlamps of the 996.2 (i find they give an agressive bulldog face to the car), i am not keen on the soft lines of the backlights. But, what i like about the 996.2 which is not present on the following generations except for GT models is that the 996.2 is more raw and less of a luxury car than the following generations so uou get some of this 993 feel with a much faster and more practical car. Lastly, prices of 996s are finally rising in Europe.
