Michael Crawford did all of his own stunts. Later there's an episode. All I will say is roller skates. I was young and late home from my Saturday job, and loved this show (and all comedy), getting home a bit late and needing the toilet decided it could wait as the show was about to start. You have to remember there were no video recorders or DVD's back then. So it was see it or miss it, with no certainty of reruns. I laughed so hard at that episode I was in pain with my need for the toilet, and had to literally crawl out of the room so I could finally check my laughter, get up and sprint to the toilet. I saw most of the episode, but never took that risk again. We had so many great comedy shows back then. Good that you appreciate them too. Hoping you and yours are and remain well.

Do bare in mind that the young Michael Crawford who plays Frank Spencer, insisted on doing all his own stunts through out the series. George Baker plays Mr Lewis here - and is probably best known on film for playing the actual Sir Hillary Bray in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Whereas the secretary is played by Linda Hayden, who became one of the best known UK dolly birds of the 1970s (she's great as the evil girl in the cult folk horror flick Blood on Satan's Claw, which also features Betty/Michele Dotrice in a smaller role).

We watched this as kids in remote rural Ireland, back in the 70s. Classic 70s show, which dad laughed away at. I haven't heard the theme tune for decades, but could probably hum it now. I vaguely remember 'Frank' doing all kinds of legitimately dangerous stunts that No actor would do today, or be allowed to do - that Michael Crawford could create such a gormless manchild like Frank Spencer and then go on to play and sing Phantom of the Opera is one hell of an actor turnaround.

Good to see you looking at this one, Josh. (This is ItsTerryTime, I've changed my username and avatar) This guy kept UK TV impressionists going throughout the entire 70s. I've never seen this particular episode, I don't think... as other comments state, one of the big "hooks" of the show is that Michael Crawford does his own stunts in the show, and it's odd that it doesn't happen here. It's like watching Knight Rider without him getting in the car. In fact, I've scrolled ahead and it looks like it's episode three where you get the first (very minor) stunt. As the series developed, the stunts became more "How on Earth did he not get killed? Health and Safety would never allow that in a million years today." Credit to George Baker in this one, because the support guest roles are always written very broadly, and some overplay to the extreme. Not that you're going to watch this and think it's a Harold Pinter play, but he does it extreme, but not over the top. One last thing, someone else might mention this... the theme tune is the title of the series spelt out in morse code. How cool is that?
@CoffeeConnected21 күн бұрын
Yes Michael Crawford as Frank Spencer is phenomenal. It has to be said though this persona he plays as Frank Spencer is simply for this TV show. I think he was careful to avoid being typecast. He's a very successful stage and theatre actor, he's been in films and on television over his career, but this Frank Spencer persona doesn't carry on into his other work, it's restricted purely for this TV sitcom. Comedy is just one of the things he can do if the role requires it.

Michael Crawford has an incredible talent. Frank is the only character he has played who is at all like this. Astonishingly, he later started in The Phantom of the Opera and Barnum. In Barnum, his circus skills were fantastic and far from the uncoordinated Frank Spencer. He is famous for doing his own stunts as Frank, which becomes more amazing as you watch the series. His career was halted when he became ill, but I believe he is in better health now. He's greatly loved.

The problem when something gets more than one series. or if a film has multiple sequels. is that they get ranked against themselves. So when one of those TV shows or films are ranked at the bottom of their group there's a general perception that it must be terrible. Quite often that isn't the case though. Even the lowest ranked thing in a series may be very good by general standards, but not the best in its own tiny group it happens to be in. A lot of TV shows and films suffer at the mercy of this thought process. Most of us probably do it and it's likely a psychological quirk we all possess. As you have fresh eyes to this series you can probably see it for what it is, a very good episode in its own right and a strong indicator of where this series is going to go.
