Great memories, I rail fanned this area from 84 to 91 also! This is awesome to see.

Bryan Porter there is some great stuff from back in that day and before. Chessie has always been a family favorite, as my dad grew up in Huntington, WV during the 70s. The great C&o rail shop. Oh and by the way we like that last name of yours 😁 it should sound familiar... - JP

Did you happen to recognize the guy trying to duck out of my shot at the bridge? I met him at Alliance that day and I lost my contact info that he gave me. He lived in that area and used to frequent both of those locations. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you... I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I have some more Conrail & Chessie on the channel. BTW, I'm not really into model railroading but you have an interesting channel.

vidwilzvids you’re welcome. And thanks for checking out my channel. I’d like to get out and get more railfan vids to put on my channel. I have a couple up there. I live in a suburb of Cleveland not to far from the Collinwood yards.

I grew up in Stark County, not too far from the Pennsy "Broadway".(Ft. Wayne Sub). The grade school that I went to was very close to the tracks. I used to get tired of seeing Baldwin Sharknoses. And the crews working in the wintertime didn't make me think about a possible future railroad career. I have a sister that lives in the Cleveland area and once after a visit I walked out onto the 152nd St. bridge over Collinwood. Must be a cold place to work in the wintertime.

vidwilzvids I used to live in Euclid which isn’t too far from the Collinwood yards. I was a kid in the 70’s and my good friends dad worked for conrail. Thee were a few times he took us up n down the yard on a switcher for fun. Sounds crazy I know. You could never do it today of course.

24:45 If I'm not mistaken, VIA Rail Canada still uses HEP-8 coaches on some of its trains. The last time I rode on one was in 2016, and while it didn't look modern at all as it was about 60 years old, it was very comfortable. Why are train seats not as comfortable as they used to be back in the day?

I like all the vintage equipment in Bellevue. The slugs on the hump are impressive too, plus all the high hoods. That RPO is in top shape. Observation car interesting with sleepers below and cafe too, as delivered and seems well maintained. Trains were interesting back then. Today its mostly boring intermodal or ethanol trains. The locomotives were plentiful different models too. Thanks for the great post.
@vidwilzvids95875 жыл бұрын
Thanks; I'm glad you liked it. The slugs are made from Fairbanks-Morse H-24-66 Train Masters that are hardwired for traction and brakes. The first dome car that you see is THE first streamlined dome car ever built. I hear that the museum has added a lot since these vids were shot.

I use to go to Ravenna to watch trains when I lived in Ohio. I think it was exit 44 off 76 before KSU. I never knew about this place!! What a shame. Great video! Like the horns better back then.

Many of these Conrail trains used to go the old PRR all the way to Chicago. But by this time, CR had nearly all routed north onto the Chicago Line downgrading the former Fort Wayne Division main to a little used Secondary.

A big reason that Conrail became successful was the intelligent way that it eliminated redundant trackage while preserving railroad jobs. Thanks for the comment.
@allgr84297 жыл бұрын
What purpose was served by the working crossing flasher on the bridge? The score in Ravenna = Conrail: 5, CSX: 4. During this era, a friend and I would hang out at Conrail's bridge over the NKP in Vermilion where the score was more lopsided. Your spot was better.
@vidwilzvids95877 жыл бұрын
I remember that I asked a couple of locals about the yellow flashers. One said that they warned motorists of falling ballast under a passing train. Another said that they were left over from the time of open cars and steam engines with cinders falling through the grate. It apparently had been preserved by the local museum group. There were no flashers on the opposite side of the bridge and I saw no ballast on the pavement below. Hopefully somebody who knows more about them will comment. Thanks for the comment.

seeing those NS slugs reminds me,,, back in 1979 we were in roanoke, there were 2 - H 24-66s there, 173 and a alco repowered one.(173 looked good, the repowered one,,,,,,,not so) a local fan said that 173 was "promissed" by N&W for the roanoke museum, it will not be slugged. yup, they slugged it. 173 was the last train master to operate.

Used to see a lot of Trainmasters on the Nickleplate when I was a kid. When I was in the Navy I was up-close and personal with a pair of F-M 20 cyl/10 piston 2000 HP emergency generators on the ship I was on. I've always had a place in the ticker for F-M OP engines. Thanks for the comment.

At 11:57 where are you shooting from and from what street is the train coming?
@vidwilzvids95875 жыл бұрын
I was shooting from the CR Cleveland-Pittsburgh right-of-way. The girder bridge that the CSX westbound is under is an old interurban line and has since been removed. The road xing barely visible beyond that is Chestnut St. The tower is RN Tower which has also been removed. The road crossing at 9:55 is W. Lake St. There is an interesting photo of this location in the 1950's at: towns-and-nature.blogspot.com/2017/05/ravenna-oh-nspennsy-crosses-over-csxb.html

Why do I feel like trains moved faster on worse track back in the 1980’s where as trains are now slower on better track now… it really does seem like most of these trains are moving at a pretty good speed, especially for how problematic the jointed rail was back then.

I feel sorry for the auto racks carrying late 80s finest cars! What a sad time in automotive history!
@vidwilzvids95875 жыл бұрын
In those days of open auto-rack cars, tramps & hobos used to get into the cars, start them up, and run the heater until the fuel ran out. They also used to use them as porta-sans. I used to see them go by with flashers or dome lights on. Thanks for the comment.

Yes at one time all auto racks were open-framed. But it wasn't like every vehicle in every auto rack was a worthless wreck by the time it was unloaded. Today maybe...
