When I finally watched this show in 2020, Garak kept stealing the spot light every single time he was in an episode, any episode involving him instantly became one of the best, every word he spoke had a layer of subtext that was diabolically smart, a character with genius writing, with an amazing actor to boot. The scene when he cajoles Dukat about his preening for Kira is fascinating: we know he dispises Dukat, but it is clear in that scene that he also values and Respects Kira. He thinks highly of her, and is acting to protect her from the slime ball that is Dukat. It also shows Garak's own sense of honour. And to think that Andrew Robinson was originally seriously considered for the role of Odo of all people. Luckely, while the role of Odo eventually went to Rene Auberjoinis, who previously appeared in The Undiscovered Country movie as Colonel West, producers wanted to keep Robinson on the show in some capacity. That is when they created a brand new character, meant specifically for Robinson, who eventually became Garak.

To me, Garak was and still is the most complex recurring character in history of Star Trek and, to be perfectly honest, quite probably the most mysterious character in history of Star Trek in general. While all the time he keeps revealing various things about himself in virtually every single episode he appeared in, we never got to learn even 1% of who and what he really was and is. His past on Cardassia was in total darkness to everyone, not even sure that Gul Dukat himself knew most of it, let alone we have no idea what exactly was he doing before he came to Deep Space 9. Nor we ever learned the real reasons why he escaped from Cardassia and defected to Federation in the first place. It was heavily implied many times that he defected because Gul Dukat had orchastrated a plot to eliminate and probably execute him, but this was never proven beyond reasonable doubt, other than the fact that he and Dukat indeed has a long standing personal feud which neither of them ever hid from enybody, and, knowing Garak, could have easily been not true. Not to mention that, despite his obvious defection, he never officially joined Federation in any capacity, except as boarder on Deep Space 9, so his true alliances were never revealed.

Would be great to have a prequel based on Cardassia focusing on Garak's upbringing with Tain as his father and head of the Obsidian Order during its glory days. Side cast would include Dukat's father who was Chief Archon of the Cardassian courts.

@@nbrandon6377 that really is a great book. I’d hate to see a TV show though. Especially one made these day seeing how they have treated the franchise

The actor made Garak fascinating. I doubt anyone else playing a younger version would end up disappointing

@@livinglifeat212 the actor no. The show runners on the other hand. Firstly they would race and gender swap him and also make him a member of the alphabet community. It would also just turn into the typical teen drama that had infected our screens lately. Basically it would destroy Garak and DS9’s legacy

Me too. And this is what is weird to me -- I generally hate that kind of partisan utilitarian ethics. But it's just so perfectly done, I absolutely love that episode. And Garak is the one who made it perfect. He whips up genuine moral indignation about one of the most ruthless things ever done on the show AND proves that Sisko is just a hypocrite if he looks at it any other way.

"Are you sure that's the point, Doctor?" "Of course, what else could it be?" "That you should never tell the same lie twice." - For me this is the quintessential line that sums up his character. He is a Cardassian to the bone. A cynic, a realist, and someone who has absolutely no use for Federation optimism or morality. He sees everything from a Cardassian point of view and draws his own conclusions.

The best part when Julian talks to Garak for the first time to really try to find out if Garak is who everybody suspects really is, he lies and misdirects but he still reveals the truth when he says he could be an outcast spy despite clearly denying it a moment later. Its such great writing and acting that it goes unnoticed at the beginning but becomes a very real part of his character towards the end.
