Mike - Thank you for sharing such an intimate look into your life. I'm a hardcore scooter guy from Mesa Arizona and your slide show had me smiling from ear to ear. Just beautiful. Thank you!

These black and white memories took me back to 1958 when I was 10. Near my house there was a motorcycle workshop full of english, italian and german models like: BSA, Triumph, Norton, Royal Enfield, Gillera, Ducatti, BMW, NSU, Horex, Adler, MZ...and of certainly: Vespa and Lambretta. Have a happy new year, Mike !

Hello Mike, once again a truly superb mix of images, music, and memories, which are really enjoyable to all, I am unfortunately of a later generation, but if I could go back in time I would choose this era, looked like you had great times. All the best to you and yours for the New Year, and thanks for yet another great video !

I loved looking at your marvelous photo collection. I noted the short white stocking the ladies wore back then, it reminded me of my mother in the 50's! Merry Christmas to you, your family and friends!

@procon Hi Nice to hear from you! I remember Heinkel scooters were also put together in Ireland. Fine machines that unfortunately cost too much for most young people at the time! I can see you made the most from your scootering days. Happy memories!

Certainly did enjoy it Mike. I bet you had the roads to yourselves back then too.Can you remember the station in the first pic? Lovely music too. All the best....Tim.

@wooltman I did restore a Triumph T10 in the 1970s which was a development ot the Tina. The largest capacity Scooter I ever owned was a 400cc Suzuki Burgman which was as near perfect as i could wish for. Thanks for the Seasons greeting. I hope you and your family too will have a happy holiday period.

Mike - this takes me back to the days when I too was free to travel on my Lambretta that I had in the late sixties. I also enjoyed the location shots in and around Bristol which I recognised - well done!!

I had Vespa 125cc 264 CKT.Lived in Kent and used to go to Lympe Airport and without booking flew to Calais or Ostend. Planes also went to Le Touquet. Silver City Bristol Freighters took 3 cars but 25 passengers. So they liked to tuck scooters or cyles into side of plane. Fares were £2 return passengers, 2/6d cycles, 5/- m/cycles. One person scootered to Berlin on a long weekend. Camping in Arnhem I went into Germany for an afternoon without German money. Got two punctures in half hour.

Hi Admiral, i enjoyed your great selection of classic scooter shots- i'v just got a 1961 Heinkel 175, it still runs well, and is a four stroke, so i like it.. my first scooter at 56 ! .. hope for us old boys yet eh !

They were good scooters, always starting easily in spite of having no kickstarter! As well as a Heinkel I also owned a Maicoletta which was also a fine machine but I had lots of problems with starting that!

Just watched with interest the Fifty Years with a Classic Scooter video. I assume you had to get to Kent or Southend to fly. Quite a journey! Regret error in my earlier post. Prices were correct but they were for a single journey. Happy Christmas to you, your wife, and all viewers.

Some nice shots of some early Mods!!,the only scooter I ever owned was a Triumph Tina after that it was mainly Honda's,Triumph's BSA's.Have a great Christmas Mike.Chris.

@TriflingCircle You could also cross the English Channel by air with a scooter from Hurn Airport near Bournemouth.That was the way i went. It was so simple to do and didnt cost a lot. Happy days! Its good you have a record of the costs back then Thanks for the Christmas wishes. May everyone find happyness and realise the significance of what went on, so long ago!

@ogauger What a fine memory! I bought the Piatti at Pankhursts in Union St and almost traded up to the Maicoletta with them, which have been the right way to go but being under 18, I couldnt get my parents to sign the papers! I later upgraded to the DKR at Pikes. The Dayton came from Fairs of Gloucester Rd in Bristol. The scooter lasted longer in service than they did!

@ThePegasus150 Great to hear of another DKR coming back to life! Dont expect it will be much faster than the Vespa was! My 200cc Defiant was disapointing in performance and like the Pegasus, the lack of a kickstarter was annoying when the batteries were low. It was great to have an electric starter otherwise! it was a brave move forward by a small British company .

@Daikenboy Thank you ! The older I get, the more precious these photos become to me!

Great vid, I had a DKR mk1 dove, the scooters I have now are a Mercury Dolphin and an Isoscooter, both in bits, at the moment I'm busy with my Superalce.
@ADMIRALSCORNER10 жыл бұрын
Wasn't the DKR a brave British attempt to get into the UK market, but not quite there! The Dolphin deserved to do well but the same story! I always thought the Iso combined the top Vespa and Lambretta styling. I like the Nippa too! Pardon my ignorance, tell me more about Superalce.

I REMEMBER THE COMPANYS THAT SOLD SCOOTERS IN PLYMOUTH IN THE 50/60s THEY WERE TOM WHITONS ON MUTLEY PLANE, PIKES MILLBAY ROAD AND KINGS OF OXFORD MILEHOUSE!

@roughchippy It truly was a magic tiime to live through. The scooter market initially expanded rapidly, providing such a fantastic choice of interesting personal transport. Sadly as cars became more available and affordable the scooter market gradually contracted and it became unbeliveable to we enthusiasts that big firms such as NSU pulled out of production completely. Best wishes for 2012!

@downhill240 Oh Gosh yes! Happy memories! It was widespread at the time. No legal requirement in those days for crash hats either although it was sensible and I had one... Everything seemed much more open to personal choice then. Luckily we never had an accident. Thank you for the Christmas wishes. I hope Santa brings your family most of what they wish for!
@ADMIRALSCORNER12 жыл бұрын
@procon Yes I remember that. They also made the Heinkel bubblecar there too. I have owned one of those in the past. I used to have a collection of classic scooters, a Heinkel amongst them. If you would like to see it, see the video titled CLASSIC MOTOR SCOOTERS 2 Two up on a Cyclemaster! Wonderful!

@siobhan104 Hi Tim. I believe it was Radstock on a club scooter club trial. No sign of any tracks there today!

@TriflingCircle Great memories of a very special time! If you look at my video FIFTY YEARS WITH A CLASSIC SCOOTER you will see one of those Silver City aircraft that used to fly bikes for a very reasonable price and cars over the English Channel. I took my original Dayton over to France that way. What a shame it cant be done like that today, especially as punctures fortunately dont occur so often!

Beautiful scooters, but there is something haunting and sad about this as well.

It was an unique period to live through. We all thought conventional motorcycles would die out due to their incomplete weather protection but were so wrong! There is room for both!

@kenzoyur I can still remember the lady who was passing by saying it will never come out! meaning the photograph on a dull rainy day! I took it as I was at a motor cycle shop at the point of trading in the DKR for the Dayton

@kenzoyur There was such an wide choice available of makes and models available. So many great names we all knew were sadly soon the dissapear. together with the factories that made them, all due to economic presures. Best wishes for 2012!
