Crikey, 5 months since the last upload! Apologies to those who've been waiting for part 8. Now that I'm in lockdown and can't leave the house parts 9 and 10 shouldn't be so long apart. Thanks for watching :)

Great video of a great journey. As Steinbeck put it: “And everywhere people asked him why he was walking through the country. Because he loved true things, [...] and there was no other way to do it save on foot."

@@darinadimitrova5068 well as per usual we here are oblivious of any reality - but these hills are supposed to be riddled with bears wolves and pickpockets.

Nice comment - Bulgarian mountains are dangerous because of wolves and pickpockets. I am a forest researcher and haven't read a single documentary that a wolf has attacked a men in Bulgaria for the last 80 years and after thousands of miles in the forests for the last 40 years I've never had problems with pickpockets :). The later is possible everywhere and Bulgaria is not an exception but mostly in big cities...

in 2017, I met a a hiker from Bulgaria on the PCT, and he was trying to rise awareness especially among us European hikers, for the fact that the Bulgarian authorities are not giving too much effort to sustain or protect their wildernesses, quite the contrary. Even the EU doesn‘t seem to care about this problem. So enjoy the great outdoors in Bulgaria as long as you can.

Excellent presentation. I live in Bulgaria and you have seen and shown parts that I am yet to visit. I don't understand why you don't have more subscribers. I would be extremely interested to know what your usual kit contents and weights were for these long Treks. I saw you had the delights of a MAGGI Vegetable Soup with Pasta, is that the usual? Some of those large Shepherd Dogs can be really aggressive, but you have to use your sticks and pack to block them and keep moving forwards; as long as it is not a large Pack and they can't get behind you then, you're usually ok to keep moving forwards vigilantly. Subbed just in case you come back again.

Thank you very much Robert. I kept meaning to make a kit video but most of my gear from the walk is in storage in another town now, and especially since the travel restrictions of last year I haven't had chance to root everything out. Pasta was standard food each night, along with anything else I could find in village shops, such as the soup.Thanks again for watching, and for the sub!

Great to see you again in this much anticipated instalment of your fantastic journey. You are the Euro uberhiker! Also confined to quarters in UK, my own E1 plans on hold this year. Best wishes to you and thanks for sharing your adventures. Am I just getting soft or does your pack look even bigger in this stage? What was your baseweight in Bulgaria?
@AshleyGDean
@AshleyGDean 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paula thanks for watching the series :) couldn't tell you my base weight sorry as I never bothered to weigh it. It's a shame your E1 trek has to be put back, but at least the trail will still be there. The E1 was very appealing... would love to hike through Italy and Norway 👍

Ashley, I've just walked the Camino and would like to do some hiking in Bulgaria (I speak Bulgarian). How easy is it to follow the route of the Kom-Emine and how challenging is it? I am not mega-fit but I just managed 300km+ of Camino in 15 days (c. 20km a day) inc. some hills and descents. I struggle with shale and scrambling though due to an old knee injury.
@AshleyGDean
@AshleyGDean 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. As far as I remember the central section of the route is well marked (I only walked Vitinya Pass - Shipka Pass) and Domino publish 3 very good maps covering the route. I don't remember much in the way of scrambling or scree, though there is at least one section that can be bypassed with an official alternative. It is quite a hilly walk though! My memory's a little fuzzy on the details now sorry, but did you see this video I posted immediately after the hike? kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4nSaKugYrushtk It contains my thoughts and experiences of the route, accommodation, etc. and links to maps/resources. Good luck on the trail! Cheers, Ashley
