While "Arcology" is a contraction of "Architecture" and "Ecology," it means more than just that. An arcology is any contained human habitation that is fundamentally self-sufficient. It provides its people with not just homes, but the building also holds the offices and other workplaces; shops and restaurants of all sorts; grocery stores, pharmacies and other places to get supplies; as well as most, if not all, of the food production and waste disposal facilities (which, unsurprisingly, are closely connected as recycling is a huge deal). One of the main advantages is the minimization of wasted time and energy (and pollutants generated) due to transportation issues. Right now, it costs billions of dollars, per year, to transport agricultural goods from rural areas where they're grown (and frequently processed) to urban areas, where they're consumed. In addition to the expense, the transportation also generates a lot CO2 and other pollutants. If everything needed for life -- including food, water, health care, livelihoods, shopping and entertainment -- were all self-contained in a single habitation, the cost savings over time could make up for the huge up-front construction costs. Additionally, returning huge swathes of farmland to nature could do wonders for the natural environment. However, as you noted, there are a number of problems. The first is, of course, that you'd want to build these where people already live, and urban real estate is ungawdly expensive. Nobody in Denver wants to move to an arcology in Wyoming, no matter how cool it is. That makes the expense of the urban renewal pretty substantial. Secondly, while the time and delay involved in transportation does contribute significantly to the 30-40 percent of the food that's wasted, in the United States, food in this country is so abundant that, even though we waste that much of the food we produce, American still struggle with obesity. So, how big a problem is the waste for most people, really? Thirdly, the air pollution generated can be addressed in a much less expensive way. Within 10 years, most trucks and automobiles will run on electricity, and an increasing percentage of that will be produced by renewable resources. Moreover, that percentage of electricity so produced will only increase. Ergo, one of the main arguments in favor of arcologies will almost certainly be answered in a different -- and far less expensive and impactful -- way. On top of all that, a self-contained arcology would generate an amazing amount of heat that would have to be disposed of, in some way. While certainly do-able, the methods needed to handle that much waste heat would need some research (if only to figure out how best to do it, with existing technology). So, while arcologies are certainly cool ideas, and research into them will certainly prove useful for city planning and the development of habitats in space or on other planets, there's really no reason to ever actually build any of them on Earth. They're fun to look into, though. :)

All taxi cabs here used to be propane until they went electric. Postal and UPS trucks are still propane. I believe fedex truck are also propane, but dont quote me. Any gasoline vehicle is fairly easy to convert to propane, however, propane is not economical anymore as the price per liter of propane has gone up. Yesm old fords are probably one of the easist to convert due to the amount of empty space under the hood, but it used to be convient and cheap for work trucks, harder to find the extra room in a sedan
@jamesengland74614 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanshahariw2908 I think more often than not they're natural gas instead of propane, at least here in Oklahoma where natural gas is very cheap. Some still run on gasoline, especially in rural areas where you can't fill up with anything else.
@danschreimann2153 жыл бұрын
The technology to run internal combustion engines on propane already has existed for decades, it's used when an internal combustion engine has to be used indoors (like a forklift inside a warehouse). The problem is that propane is a gas at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, so a puncture of the tank results in a possibly explosive situation. So if cars ran on propane, a fender bender could be explosive

The one building/ complex that I wish was built would be the The Mega City pyramidal structure. If the significant technical problems are overcome, then it may be possible to build the complex module by module till a very large building is built with multiple capabilities and functions which contrasts the limited commercial function of today's skyscrapers and mega-building factories. Also, it would good (imo) to have at least one substantial building that can legitimately be called an arcology type [beyond the small projects and experimental biodomes].

I watch anything with Simon on a daily. Always playing when I do my makeup & my bf finally got to hear some of Business Blaze the other day - he was laughing so hard at the intro, love it all.
