Absolutely beautiful music for a Sunday afternoon or any time -- by Mark Lopeman, tenor saxophone; James Chirillo, guitar; Tal Ronen, string bass. Recorded on March 29, 2015, at Casa Mezcal on Orchard Street, New York City, by Michael Steinman for JAZZ LIVES (www.jazzlives.w...).

Awesome! It's amazing how much support an upright bass can give even without having a drummer!

I just found my favorite guitar player. My goodness what a beautiful everything. You’re hearing a voice in your soul, and it is coming out, not just as a single line, but as harmony. I just absolutely love this so much.

To perform artistry like this amidst that god-awful din... THAT'S the definition of professionalism (not to mention an obvious unwavering commitment to the music). Everyone so in the pocket, but damn, JAMES!

Comping separates the best from the rest I firmly believe. What a master. And don't kid yourself... he can play as many courses in a row as he wants, no two with the same harmonic tapestry. It really can be intimidating as an amateur player listening. I love the trading 4's!

Have been enjoying James' vids on rhythm playing, so this is a treat to hear him take a solo. His comping is also so great! Nice comment at the end by Tal Ronen: "Jazz, which is a traditional Mexican folk music..." (Listen and clap, people...or... go on eating and talking, business usual). Great music/musicians! 5:04 Clap! People!! 8:29 when you think the leader is taking you to a 3-6-2-5 ending...but isn't.

Great performances! How difficult it is to concentrate at a loud gig? If I were playing I would wish to be run through a headphone amp off a mixer so I could close my eyes and just focus on the music wearing a pair of shades. It must be hard.

You re right, but these players are wonderful professionals who can block out the chatter. If they weren't able to do that, I don't think they would have lasted as long nor would they continue to make such gorgeous music. And -- in fairness -- the diners at this place were there to eat and drink and chat; they didn't come for a concert and, had they been shushed, it would have been the end of live music there. Sadly, there is no more music at Casa Mezcal, so these videos are all we have. Thanks for paying attention, Jay!

Great great playing for sure! But loud background...Maybe the audience was not ready for this gift from these musicians? What a shame...Nevertheless thank you for playing and sharing!

I do agree on all counts. I gave up shushing and glaring; the folks here had come for drinks and tacos and, to them, the music was incidental -- the living people creating the sounds were no different from a DJ's laptop. But thank you for appreciating with such balance!

James Chirillo….I know him from his videos on big band rhythm guitar more than anything else. The Freddie Green style. But I think here he sounds more like Jim Hall as opposed to Freddie Green.

Dear Ms. Small, I think you are unaware of the circumstances in which jazz is usually performed these days. It is not played in hushed concert halls for the most part; no, it is offered where people are eating and drinking and talking. It is packaged as entertainment rather than high art, and perhaps that is deplorable, but unless you are willing to subsidize some serene places for this music to be performed, you might expend your considerable critical energies otherwise. And not all of my videos are noisy.
