Her breadth of vocabulary and the poise demonstrated in her speech is miles better than the average British person probably making fun of her accent. It's such a sad story that her accent gets made fun of rather than her intellect that shines through even in this short 2 minute video being appreciated.

weng ken mak I'd expect her to be able to speak English properly after nearly 30 years living and working here. If this is how she talks day to day, people will probably have a hard time understanding her. Even the BBC saw fit to give her subtitles. There are places, a workplace for example, where clear communication is very important, and not understanding someone would be very frustrating. Remember, after 30 years, functionally she is a British citizen, not a Polish one. If she had been in the UK for only a few years then I would congratulate her on her English, but she clearly hasn't improved her understanding of the language beyond a pretty basic level. It *is* arrogant to: 1. Not learn the language of the country you've lived most of your life in, to the standard of a natural citizen. 2. Expect people to work around your decision not to learn fluent English. It's also arguably arrogant of her to blame her accent, when it's much more likely her poor mastery of the language that's getting people annoyed. She thinks it must be something she can't help, rather than something she can. Some immigrants get a bad rap, but she isn't an immigrant at this point. She's a citizen who can't speak the language of her own country.

Sonnys Mummy UK One may learn a language for their own pleasure, so they can speak with the locals in their own language should they go to a place which's language they have learnt, because part or all of their family comes from a place where people don't speak their language, and for many other reasons.... For instance, I speak French because a big part of my family is French or comes from France, I started learning Spanish because I could already speak it a little bit and I had to choose between learning Spanish or computing when I was in 9th grade and I thought it would be easier to learn Spanish seeing as I could already speak and understand it a little bit; I started learning German because my parents wanted me to, then stopped two years ago and am now getting back at it because of Sophie from the movie Sophie's Choice ( I still need to read the book ); I want to learn limba romaňa because my cousin's wife is Romanian and so is her family; I started learning portuguese because as I was trying to learn limba romaňa it occurred to me that since I already speak Spanish, French and a little bit of Italian it might be easier for me to learn portuguese rather than limba romaňa; I want to learn polish because part of my family is polish or comes from Poland, because of Sophie from the movie Sophie's Choice and because it's a beautiful language with a beautiful accent; I want to learn French sign language because it is the one from which a great part of the other sign languages come from and it would allow me to speak/communicate with as many deaf people as possible; I want to learn Italian because part of my family either is Italian, comes from Italy or speaks Italian as though they were natives; and I want to learn greek because of Mamma Mia! . See ? There are many reasons for which one may want to learn a language.

Its so sad that she wants to get rid of who she is just to conform to some peoples stupid expectations and i cant believe the speech therapist is choosing to help her do this. The therapist should of just walked out and said something like this is not what i am here for. A accent is not a speech problem like stuttering or anything.
@captkirk28
@captkirk28 6 жыл бұрын
Mary Preston The person suffers and she wants to get rid of her accent. This IS sad, but this is also her own choice. The therapist gave her a chance to believe in herself again, she said: "we'll get rid of your accent, if you want to" - the last part is primarily important, because she had said exactly "if you want to". It is much better to help her to sound like Brit than if this woman will do a suicide because of depression.
@bendiamandis7594
@bendiamandis7594 6 жыл бұрын
Mary Preston - While it is sad that the woman feels like she needs to change her accent, it is not the fault of the speech therapist. Just as it is not the fault of a plastic surgeon who meets their clients “needs”. This woman has made it very clear that she does not feel safe in her current situation and in order to feel secure she is taking action by trying to change her accent. It is extremely disheartening that changing the way she talks would be the best option, but it is not a stupid idea nor is it the fault of the therapist. The therapist did not force her, she eased into the topic and even tried to comfort her when she became emotional.

Government want us to learn English so we can communicate with other but why don’t they get rid the root of problems! Sorry that I rant it out in here.

I totally feel you. I'm an immigrant as well and speak fluent English, but I still can't pronounce some words like the locals. When I was going to college, I used to work as a helper at the local supermarket and I would get angry stares from some people simply for having an accent. However, unlike that lady in the video, I'm not gonna hire someone to change my pronunciation. Not gonna pretend to be someone I'm not just to fit it. Don't like my accent? Not my problem.

When I worked at a no kill shelter in South Florida the woman who ran it was from Poland. She met her husband in Miami a few months after moving to the US and he was from Colombia so she had the most adorable Polish/Colombian hybrid accent. She'd call the dogs her 'leeetle sheeethad munkeeys' and if there was drama she always said in Polish, "Not my circus, not my monkeys". She has saved literally thousands of animals and saved my baby hound Hank, who is right next to me as I type this, from death row. She gave up having a family, works non stop at a non profit she built from the ground up, sees and deals with absolutely heartbreaking animal abuse daily, and is on my county's animal control board. She was hard to understand when I first started volunteering, especially over the phone (her husband was hard to understand too lol) but she hired me, believed in me, gave me my best friend, a new animal/work family, and is an inspiration. People would comment on her accent all the time and even make fun, but I can't imagine discounting her or any other person just for having an accent that differs from mine or one I'm familiar with. Just don't confuse her for a Russian or a German haha

This is sick. In Poland, when I hear or watch on KZbin a foreigner who speaks Polish poorly, I do not criticize. On the contrary, I am happy and proud of such a person. If someone doesn't like something because of their stupidity and racism, they should change themselves, not tell someone else. Somehow it never occurred to me to criticize someone for pronouncing my language. When we were young, when we were fooling around, we spoke with an American accent like one of the famous Polish journalists. I will say it again. It's sick to drive a man to such a state that he has to be ashamed of his accent. Of course, we praise foreigners who speak Polish beautifully, but we do not criticize those who speak with an accent. I love all people in the world. And I will never treat others the way some people do. That is, in advance. You shouldn't change anything about yourself. Because that means the bad man beat you. Greetings from Poland! 😘

Poland is considered as the center of Europe, the phrase "heart of the Europe" is pretty often used when they say something about Poland. But of course, if we had to say if Poland is more on the western side or east side, it would be the east. Even though, Poland lately is really modernized and it's a great place for living and visiting. I think that this country is really underrated but I hope that it will change soon :)

chris muller lol, it seems that you have never been in Poland. Yeah, Polish people have much lower salaries (this is just funny how much zloty is worth compared to euro or pounds), but it's not the least developed country. Even wifi is better and quicker than wifi in Germany, I know it cause I experienced it personally :p. Polish big cities are industrialized and they are building something all the time. You can go away from one city and come back after two years and you won't recognize your own neighborhood. Do you know that even Warsaw has been chosen as one of the best vegan cities on the whole world? I doubt that "the least developed" city would give its own mark even in that "unimportant" thing. I can say much more about that, but the best thing would be if you were there personally and judge it with your own eyes

I went to an international school- one of the british teachers would tell us off having an american sounding accent and I personally feel offended when people say my accent sounds american- it's called MID-ATLANTIC (aka a general jumble of accents) Another time someone asked me how hard it was to talk to people because of their accent when they were LITERALLY one town over north from where I was previously in the uk because "Their accent is so heavy and hard to understand" but I personally think that a heavy scottish accent is just as clear as a london accent A choir coach told specific members to learn how to say words properly instead of saying that they need to emphasize specific sounds for it to sound good in the song "You sound weird" "That sounds so wrong" "It sounds bad" "You are not from america so why do you sound so american" "You sound obnoxious" "Why can't you pronounce things right" "You are not speaking english if you say it like that" Most of these comments came from British people and some were directed at primary school children and not me. I apologize if saying Zee-bra instead of Zeb-Rah offended you Im my first language I got the comment once and it stuck by me heavily- how can living a bit more east of the capital make me sound different? Is it perhaps my other first-language influencing it? Who knows? But an accent is a story- a story people will hear and make a judgement on which should be "Oh! I wonder where they come from, how long have they spoken english for?" And not "Don't speak english if you have an accent!" which I have heard numerous times directed at other people. To clarify back home we have a joke for english pronunciation - You ate a just boiled burning hot potato and you can't speak properly until your mouth heals So if you sound like that to other nationalities in your native tongue- how will your foreign pronunciation sound?
@Pidalin
@Pidalin 5 жыл бұрын
English has no united official pronunciation so people can speak how they want. Sometimes they making "ou" from o, sometimes it's just short "o" sometimes saying a as "ej" or just as "e" sometimes saying e as normal "e" sometimes like "i", I is sometimes "aj" and sometimes just "i" so I don't care, they still have to understand if you say it differently. I think English needs some modernisation and make order in that writing and pronouncing. In my language that was already in 15th century (they burned that guy who wanted simplify our language) and last archaisms were deleted in 19th century. I don't understand why English can't be modernised too. Especially that archaic French words need change writing. Modernisation of English writing system would make world better place. ;-) Check Polish for example, they keeping their medieval writing so it's almost impossible read it for other nations even when it's still latin alphabet. English has similar problem in many cases. For example that words with double leTTers are black magic for me, I still confusing them. realy, really, etc...it's crazy remember that

The Polish accent is wonderful and Polish culture is beautiful. Their food, their traditions, so interesting. I'm lucky to be friends with a Polish person and she's so amazing. Her accent is very strong, stronger than this, so much so that most people don't understand her, sometimes even I have to tell her to slow down ha but she's great. Anyone who is against Polish people simply because they're Polish are simply ignorant and they're missing out on some pretty interesting conversations and great potential friendships. I've heard the "coming over here, taking our jobs" shit said to my friend so many times and it's vile. In this country there is minimum wage, Polish people don't get paid less therefore they don't get hired over British people. I've never known a Polish person get a job over a more qualified British person.

My parents are Polish, their English vocabulary is limited and they've lived in Australia for almost 35 years each. I will see how people speak to them and I am surprised they don't get offended. Some people will slow down their speech or use broken English and speak to them as if they're dumb or deaf or both. It actually doesn't help. Speak normally, slightly slowly, articulate your words and annunciate and you'll be clearly understood and you'll be encouraging good speech habits in people whose English is a foreign language.
