No car should ever have a stock audio system, especially one that you spend the most time driving. For this reason, I've been experimenting with tons of different configurations and builds. At no point in time did I intend on building a Sound Quality competition vehicle.
Another cool thing to note is that the only brand new gear used was the Cabling and Sound Damping.
Kicking off the build, I wanted a solid source unit, so I borrowed the Sony XAV-9500ES from my UTE. This is the best media player I've owned to date, so it made sense to use it in a daily.
I then started off with 1x Ground Zero 4SX amplifier that powered a mixed and matched 3-way speaker system, until I got my hands on a set of Ground Zero Plutonium 3-way components. This was later complimented with a second 4SX amplifier, of which 1 powers the left of the car while the other powers the right.
It's pointless having high end components and then using mediocre cable so I had the guys at Tchernov build me some custom length RCAs that fits perfectly between the Sony Head unit and the Helix mk2 pro DSP and then to the 2x 4channel amplifiers. A damn lot of Tchernov 2mm speaker cable was used to compliment the RCAs, and as soon as budget allows, I'll switch to Tchernov power cable too.
The speaker pods were 3D printed and then treated to some special chemicals to ensure that we don't have an issue with the sun melting them. While this may look like it was the easiest to do, it wasn't. Thanks to Grant at Bespoke Audio, I didn't have to make all the mistakes myself as he assisted me with a ton of guidance with my 3D printing venture. 28 sets later and I finally had a winner.
Believe it or not, the Sound Damping was one of the last things I did on this car. I know I always preaching that you need to start with a solid foundation, but to tell you the truth, I didn't even know if I wanted to keep this ride or not, hence the delay. Anyway, I used Targa Gold on all the plastic bits, followed by stp foam. The metal bits were treated in a mixture of Stp and Autofun Sound Damping.
On the tuning side, big shot out to my homie Junaid for teaching me a different method of setting up my Time Alinement. It made a positive difference from my previous event.
While the car did score the highest points at the recent Meca Sound Quality Finals in South Africa, I know that there is a lot left in it so I plan on rebuilding soon, hence I'm quickly put this out before the changes start.
Thanks for reading.
