Today's Vlog has me on the skid loader doing a bit of work. I thought I might take you around the loader and give a few pointers and pieces of advice to a person who might be considering the purchase of a used or new skid steer or skid loader or compact track loader. Hope this helps ya!

Great video. Good advice on buying equipment that I've never considered. I wish I'd watched this before I bought my tractor. One tip for keeping service records... Email yourself logs and thorough information at each service and include pics of receipts and bottles of oil and other parts that will show what you bought and part numbers and such. When the email arrives in the inbox, create a folder named after the piece of equipment and send the emails there. Emails don't get lost and get greasy and wrinkled. People can make up service records on paper but it's hard to fabricate dates and pics in emails when it comes time to sell. You can send the whole folder to the buyer when you sell.

Ok when you mentioned my baby the F-15 I had to chime in...the F-15 is a center-stick design, with hydro-mechanical controls unlike the F-16 and F-22 which are side-stick designs and full fly-by-wire. Oh yeah, and something cool I do with my buckets. You can weld a tow hook to the top of the bucket, grab you a chain, and you can tow anything you can wrap a chain around. You can also wrap your train around small trees while attached to the hook and pull them up. Make sure you weld it good of course haha.

Very nice complete review of what to look for when buying a skid steer. I bought an older John Deere skid steer back in 2004 from a private owner and yes, some people do play hide and seek with potential buyers. My skid steer had low hours and was not beat, but it did have a few things wrong with it such as leaky AND or original seals. The old and original seals leaked which resulted in bucket drift. I replaced "both" of the lift cylinder seals by myself so the cost was minimal. Also, my skid steer had original or OLD hydraulic hoses. I did not think that was a big deal until one blew while I was using the machine and hydraulic fluid went all over my driveway. I have since replaced all of the hoses, BUT they are expensive to replace. Also, one of my wheel axle seals started leaking. I too fixed this myself, but it was a PITA to do. If I would have looked closer at the wheel axles (behind the wheels) I would have noticed a lot of caked-on dirt and farm animal waste which gradually caused my one wheel seal to leak. The good here is that I then immediately cleaned the other wheels (and removed the a,lot of crap there too) to eliminate them from leaking. However, the biggest thing that was wrong with my skid steer was one of the tilt cylinders had a small "nick" in the cylinder. Yes, it was small BUT even a small nick will result in a cylinder leak. I took the leaky tilt cylinder into a shop and that cost me about $200. So, you are right, bring a piece of cardboard and really look carefully at everything. Also, hop in the seat and take it out for a full operational test and drive.

I bought a used Mustang skid steer. Medium sized, about the size of the one in video. Paid $1800....came with 3 attachments. Rebuilt the carb, put in new fuel lines, fuel pump. All that cost about $70 or less. Repainted it for $20 with spray cans, looks new. Has been running great for a couple years. I bought a spare engine for real cheap because I thought mine would die. It just keeps on going!

You have the filters mixed up, the top one is Hyd and the middle is oil. Also, when you run that machine out of fuel, you have to crack the bleeder valve knob open while you prime the primer bulb, crank it and it will start right up. Once it starts, and cleans the air out, close the valve. It takes maybe 2 min.

Im no diesel mechanic but from my experience and family experience if you are looking at any truck, tractor or piece or diesel equipment. When you go to look at it before you start it feel if the engine is warm. You want to know how it starts cold not warm. This is also included on new equipment.

many guys i know that have owned a bobcat for years, say that they are the type of machine thats worth making the small fixes on . as in even if its a beat up 80s machine its still worth fixing any issues because the machine will run good as new if done right. not like a car thats just finished after so long. good video!

I have operated Bobcat equipment my whole life, I have two skidsteers, with both having over 3000 hours. In my experience, Bobcat has always been the best machine. I have had little to no mechanical issues from the machines. Kubota does make an excellent engine!

Bought my first bobcat (07- S185) at 20 years old, had 3,000hrs when I got it has 4,100hrs now. Only issue is I had to replace the alternator. And clean up some wire connections behind the ignition panel.

@@walsh9354 a vice and a plumbers wrench or huge pliers, and a couple sockets you can do it yourself. really easy. Costs under 100 for each seal kit. I bent a shaft, used a hydraulic pipe bender to press it back to straight, and changed my seals i was 100% good again. Saved a ton of money

Good Video with some great tips for beginners. I've had my 873 for a couple of years now but wished I'd known more before I bought mine. I've spent thousands repairing issues I found after the fact. By the way, the tires are mounted backwards on your buddy's Bobcat there. LOL I noticed it while watching the video. He may have mounted the wheels on the opposite sides instead of using wheel spacers so he could run some over the tire tracks, but it looks like they just mounted the tires backwards on the rims.

this is Rich on my wifes site. if your not use to any off road machinery and your looking to buy something or you own one already. it could be a small skid steer to a dump truck. check the rad cooling fins for dirt pluggage. really fine dust plugs the rad fins causing the engine to over heat and if the unit has a history of over heating this will glaze the cyl walls and causing blue smoke from the exhaust because of oil blowby. cure if smoking! engine rebuild,new piston rings and cylinder hone. so clean you rad fins a couple times a yr or even more frequently if in a very dusty environment. Josh just a bit of heads up the more electronic parts and gizmos you have the more probs you'll get when its older also i kind of prefer machines with tracks basically you get no flats and its easier to get out if you get stuck. With older machines hydraulics usually leak a bit just keep it topped up and check your seals you can repack them yourself and save a ton of money. Tracked bobcats you have to check the rear sprocket for wear teeth should be square and have lots of meat on them also the track should have lots of rubber replacement is about 1100 $ each grease the moving parts and you're all set. Maintenance, maintenance is the rule. I made my own record keeping so I can track hours, date, type of filters, type of fluids etc. With different types of equipment, if your going to monitor their use you need to keep track. Good points for video.

Excellent video. Anytime you buy anything with an engine pay attention to the exhaust when you start it up and while it’s running pull the dipstick and open the oil fill cap to see if there is any blow by.

Hey Josh! I'm caching up on your videos. So I used to use a skid loader similar to this one when I worked on a grounds crew. We also had a larger and wider Bobcat as well. I would also add to drive it on different terrain and drive it with and without a load. The one like this had more of an on road tire and would bounce like crazy! You had to use the seatbelt or it would throw you around!!! But the new one was pure luxury. It had an air ride seat and also did not bounce around at all. The newer one was slower though due to its size, so I preferred the medium one....unless it was hot out, then used the new one since it had AC! Oh yea, the heaters on these are awesome in the winter! Keep up the good farm work and camera work, wooo!

One more thing to add is the aux. hydraulics have 2 different ratings depending on the machine (low/std flow) and (high flow) this will play a difference in attachments you add to it

One thing to know is, that no one ever tells you even the owners manual. When working on hill side at 45 Deg. or above you can and I have seen it burn your engine up due to lack of oil from the pickup tube in oil pan drain to much to back or front if you stay on that angle to long. I am old skid steer tech. Not all. will do this depending on brand. with motors setting side ways like bobcat not so much but GEIL and other engine runs front to back set up, can be a problem. Also need to check drive chain slack from frt to rear wheels, to much may need to readjust or replace the chain. AND never get out of skid steer with bucket up, they can fall and well you know. I wish they would install psi stop safety valve like on bucket trucks ect. but they don't . Take care neighbor. Love your vids .

Also, Skid steers come in all shapes and sizes, from radial lift to vertical, from wheels to tracks, electric over hydraulic controls to standard hand and foot likes this 773 (great machine btw) higher horsepower, heavier lift capacity, how high it can lift a load, in cab radios and backup cameras and some newer ones (BobCat Deere and CAT) large lcd screens. These machines are versatile and effective from loading to hauling, digging, breaking, lifting, mulching, mowing lawns, cutting trees down, lifting pallets of material. Skid loaders and Compact track loaders have changed the industry! My personal choice of brand would be New Holland, customer since 96’, but brands are things of preference fortunately there are a myriad of brands ASV, BobCat, CAT, Case, John Deere, Gehl, New Holland and many many more ! While these are all great machines while new, used Skid steers can sometimes be basket cases, some things to watch out far are and whining from the hydraulics, any cracks of the arms, any hesitation and or jittery movements from the bucket and arms, how responsive the machine is in terms of movement and operation of the arms and bucket, always watch out for structural rust such as cylinder pins arms axles arm pillars etc, as well as sloppy arms while in the air (applies to vertical lift machines such as this 773) how they may wiggle side to side, how the cab is wether or not it is fully operational. To sum things up Skid Steers are great ! New and Used, New and Old, Small and Big, Clean and Dirty, they are super tools of ever growing industries! Thanks for the video. The biggest problem I had when looking for a smallish skid loader was people misrepresenting what they have for sale. Especially on Craigslist. It’s surprising how often someone takes an inferior brand or model, paint it yellow and put Caterpillar stickers on it, or paint it white and put Bobcat stickers on it. The other thing I saw was people selling a desirable model, but when you open the door and look, they have adapted a motor/pump combination from a different (usually smaller) model, and not disclosed that.

Each side of this machine have two sets of drive chains. Lower the arms and roll the bucket forward to lift the front set of tires off the ground. Shut the machine off and walk to the side of the tire that is off the ground and try to roll the tire forward and back. This will show the drive chain tension on that wheel. If you find to much play,or hearthe chains sla the bottom of the case, then the chains will need adjustments or more.

I will just say this, if your going to get an open cab, get one with foot pedals for loader controls. Nothing worse, in the dead of winter not being able to feel your hands and not have dexterity to control hand controls. With the bobcat , you can put big warm gloves on and still operated well. If your getting a cab that is heated, then ya, hand controls you can have some good control with. I ran a bobcat for 6 years at my last job, and it worked well. i got use to a case a few times when we would get a second loader.

yes i used gloves often, just with the hand controls, having big insulated gloves on you could loose some finesse. Where with the foot pedal control i find it easier with out a heated cab and with carharts and gloves and bulky coat on.

Great channel and video. I have an older bobcat skidsteer also (743), and love their simplicity, including very few wires, simple fuel system, bulletproof Diesel engines, and old controls that won't break and cost thousands to fix. Most farms seem to have a skidsteer, just a great machine for general work. There are a few really knowledgeable guys on the skidsteer forum that helped me a great deal to fix things, highly recommend...

My salesman/now buddy at my John Deere dealer in Crocket, TX was friendly, honest, and not only sold me down in size but gave me the perfect tractor for what I wanted to do. I bought a Bobcat 873 that did hard time at a foundry. It bled oil like a stuck pig, hard to start, had one bad axle hub, and the arms were badly fractured from ramming castings out of the molds. So needles to say was badly abused and I picked it up for $1500. Now I'm not made of money, so $45K for a new one is out of the question. Many of the parts to repair the issues were not expensive, it just took time and effort. The main oil leak was from the arm control valve seals that only cost a total of $12, but six hours to install. Rebuilding each cylinder was about $50 and three hours each. The hard to start issue was a $15 glow plug relay and poor glow plug terminations. The bad axle required a $350 shaft repair and $150 used hub. My Bobcat dealer wanted $2800 for a used arm frame, so I removed my arms and fish plated bothsides of both arms. I replaced all inboard and out board wheel bearings, races and seals that can be seen in the link below. So to date I think I have less than $4K in the machine total but I have a fair amount of time invested, and time is money. But I know the condition of my machine, plus I have the invoice history from new. So at this point given the present condition of the machine and my investment in time, I confident I could make money, but I have no desire to sell because I've built a dependable machine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZvTfHelo9OLrqc

The 773 bobcat is a great skid loader, it has 46 hp but it gets the job done, it is also one of the most common bobcats out there but they don’t make it anymore

When I was learning what to look for on a skid steer. I found out that the value of a machine is affected by the hydraulics. The industry average life span is bench marked at 4K hours for the hydraulic pumps,wheel motors,controls and cylinders. Those are the life components of a skid steer. I learned that the best value was to search for a machine in the 2k to 3k hour range to minimize the cost of worn out hydraulic components and get maximum usefulness out of it on the farm without nickel and diming you to death

A track loader might be a better choice, the traction is much better and all the same accessories fit. Bobcat is faster and usually has 2 speeds and appears to be a better machine. I have done a lot of research on bobcat, go to their site and browse, couldn't hurt.

Be careful when hooking up the aux hydraulics, Bobcat has its own recommended oil and some skidsteers use 10 30 sae oil. Damage could occur if accidently mixed. I never rent attachments as you can not be sure the type of oil that has been used previously.

Tracks are better but wheeled carry a better price used. If you buy wheeled and plan on digging and moving round bales, then get a large framed one. Big tires and bigger HP. You have to drive it and if you can't, take someone with you that can. Skid steers are the most abused equipment for sale.

A Tracked Skid-Steer is much safer than a rubber-tired one. Rubber-tires are good for pretty much flat-ground and that's about it.

i was looking at a skid steer and told him to fire it up and it just had a very loud knocking sound from the motor, he said its normal and within about 2 mins it made a pop and just shut off

Hey man! I noticed in the beginning of the video where you pointed out the types of filters, and you called the oil filter the hydraulic filter, and the hydraulic filter the oil filter. The big orange one is the hydraulic filter up top. the oil filter is the one attached to the engine block. But spot on on the fuel filter. Always remember that the bigger filter goes to the system with the most fluid! Theres much more hydraulic fluid in that machine than there is engine oil! Other than that, great video!

marking filters is not a way to judge the condition of the machine it could have had two oil changes in its life and then changed and back hours marked for all you know.Service records can be faked very easily its a nice thing to look at but I never factor in extra value cause of it. Save the cardboard get in to it lift the cab start using your hands to find the leaks. Substantial leaks can and will fill up in the belly pans and not show an external leak. I have learned lessons and now take an independent heavy duty mechanic with me and pay him to pull oil samples on the machine and give it an inspection. Deposits can be given being conditional that the independent inspection and oil analysis come back acceptable to you the buyer Its not cheap but neither is buying a machine with a screwed motor etc. And if the seller does not agree to the inspection process make tracks.

No matter how pretty they look on the outside, the real money is in the drive system. The side covers would be nice if they easily opened to reveal the worn chain drives. Man, these get expensive.

I own 773 machine! First do not start it till you check the hydraulic oil level!!! If it empty and you always assume it is! You will destroy the pump!! Next warm the fluid up before moving it. If it has all bobcat filters then it been maintained well as bobcat filters cost money. Check the pre filter and the filter. If there is a dirty filter something up as the pre filter did not do its job! Did they use bobcat hydraulic oil or no name?? Factory fluids have components like anti foam additives and are engineered for the machine. Lift the cab up and inspect under the cab. Look for leaks. The control valve rebuild is 1k! You did a nice basic video but it needed more. These machines can be expensive to fix! 4K for engine. Hydraulic pump 2k. Hydraulic motor 1k. The k’s can add up!!!$$$$$

Very true...I've bought hundreds of cars in my day...just to enjoy and sometimes to repair and sell...tractor dealers are their own special breed of person around these parts...cocky..arogent and mysterious and less than knowledgeable about the products they sell....first time I went to kubota and asked "Why should I buy Kubota v/s John Deere...the salesman said....It depends if you like green paint! What the heck kinda answer was that!!
